CURT HENNIG (MR. PERFECT) - FAQ

Why didn't he wrestle from 1994 until 1997?
Curt had suffered a back injury. Hennig took a year off to recover from the injury but before he returned to wrestling he took out a very big insurance policy with the company Lloyds of London. Hennig returned to wrestling at Survivor Series 1992 but at the end of 1993 he injured his back again so he went into retirement and begin collecting millions of dollars a year on the insurance policy he took out the year before. By December 1996 Hennig either wanted to return to wrestling or the insurance company stopped paying him because his health was back to normal. Hennig returned to WWF in early 1997 and then went to WCW the summer of that year where he stayed until 2000 when he was released from his contract. He returned to the WWF in January of 2002 at the Royal Rumble. He was released later that year in an incident discussed below. Hennig made his debut for NWA TNA not long afterwards until his passing on February 10, 2003.

Did he lose the AWA World title to Greg Gagne in 1987?
Yes and no. Greg Gagne beat Curt Hennig in a Cage Match for the AWA title in Minnesota but their was some controversy in the match. The title change had not been cleared by AWA's head bookers and the result was that half of them recognized Hennig as the champion and the other half Gagne. A deal was worked out where Gagne would lose the title in a rematch to Hennig and the Greg Gagne title win has been ignored since.

Was he drunk on Nitro?
Most likely. WCW denies he was drunk but the fact is that Hennig had all the classic cases of intoxication. He slurred his words and even fell over during the interview. After that night WCW banned alcohol in the backstage area so it's pretty likely Hennig was drunk that night.

Why was he released by the WWE (WWF)?
Hennig was on a flight back from the U.K. in which the WWE held the Insurrextion PPV. Hennig reportedly was drinking a little too much on the flight and ended up exchanging words with Brock Lesnar resulting in both men brawling on the flight. The WWE posted the released on theirwebsite and later that week Jim Ross added in his "Ross Report" that the WWE does not tolerate that kind of a behavior which lead to Hennig's release.
