ROAD WARRIORS - FAQ
I seem to remember Road Warrior Hawk teaming with a Japanese wrestler in the early/mid 1990's. Who was this, and where was Road Warrior Animal at the time?
Road Warrior Animal suffered an injury, then Hawk went to Japan and teamed up with Kensuke Sasaki who was known as "Power Warrior", and were called the "Hell Raisers." Together they won the IGWP tag team titles on two different occasions. Once in 1992, and the other in 1994. LOD were apart for four years, then joined forces again.
A few weeks ago when the Legion of Doom had a terrible comeback match, JR announced them as the Road Warriors at one point during the match which he then corrected himself calling them the Legion of Doom. Now my question is, 1. Where is the Road Warriors name from, and the history? 2. They are called Road Warrior Hawk and Animal but together they form LOD, was there ever any significance to this?
When Hawk and Animal first got together and started wrestling as a tag team, they were known as the Road Warriors, Hawk and Animal. The first territories the Road Warriors worked were in Georgia and the AWA. Wherever they wrestled, be it AWA, Georgia, NWA, WCW they were known as the Road Warriors when tag teaming. The only place in which they were known as the Legion of Doom as a TAG TEAM was WWF/WWE. This was mainly the WWF trying to distance themselves from WCW and the other promotions by having them use a different name exclusively in the WWF. The Road Warriors were part of a stable/group early in their career where the groups name was the Legion of Doom. The group started in Georgia in 1983. The group consisted of Jake Roberts, The Spoiler, King Kong Bundy, Buzz Sawyer, and the Road Warriors with "Precious" Paul Ellering as manager. Arn Anderson also joined the group for a short period of time. Either way, to answer your question, the Legion of Doom was always their tag team name in the WWF/WWE so that is why JR corrected himself. This is kind of weird, as when they came out in WWF they would always announce them "Road Warrior Hawk...Road Warrior Animal...The Legion of Doom." So they still were using the Road Warrior name, but giving the tag team a different name.
