Alberto del Rio Appearing at TripleMania, Gets New Name
AAA announcer Arturo Rivera tweeted out this week that former WWE star Alberto del Rio, who was fired last week, would be appearing at TripleMania this Sunday! AAA’s CEO Joaquin Roldan confirmed that ADR would be part of “TripleMania” saying that it is 100% going to happen. Roldan also said that he would be appearing AS Alberto del Rio. ADR is believed to be under a 90-day no compete clause which would mean he cannot appear on PPV, iPPV, or TV anywhere for 90 days. On Thursday AAA and ADR held a press conference in Mexico City announcing his official signing to AAA. He said that his “present and future” was in AAA but they did not give an idea on how long of a deal he will be working under. He did acknowledge that he is under a 90-day no compete clause but said that it is his understanding that it just means he can’t wrestle (which would be news to me and probably everyone else), but his lawyers are trying to free him of it so he can wrestle at “TripleMania” (unlikely). He said that his new name will be “El Patron” as WWE owns the “Alberto del Rio” name. He was referred to on Mexican TV during his time in WWE as “El Patron” so this is a pretty logical decision from him.
Rey Misterio Jr. Returning to AAA?
While promoting AAA’s “TripleMania” this week AAA announcer Hugo Savinovich claimed that WWE star Rey Mysterio would be returning to AAA once his WWE contract issues had been resolved. Rey’s deal with WWE was supposed to end this year but reports have surfaced that WWE has triggered a clause in Rey’s contract to freeze the deal for another year due to how much time he has missed over the time of his contract via injury. There have also been reports that this could end up as a lawsuit between Rey and WWE but all of that is just rumor at this point. Rey returning to AAA has been a rumor for years at this point. He really first made a name for himself in AAA in the early 90’s due to his feuds with Psicosis and Juventud Guerrera before eventually coming to ECW and then WCW in America. This would be yet another massive signing for AAA if they are able to pull this off.
AAA US Updates
On this week’s MLW Podcast Konnan said that AAA had planned on taping the first episodes of their El Rey show at the end of August, but that has been pushed back to September. He says they are planning on using PWG stars and that the tapings will take place in a building owned by El Rey in Los Angeles meaning it is likely a closed set rather than an arena. CubsFan over at LuchaBlog has a theory about the El Rey show which is very depressing if it is true. He believes there will be very few, if any, actual AAA luchadors and simply American indy wrestlers in masks. Not only that but there has been speculation that it will be much more like a “stage show” rather than a tradition wrestling show which is honestly going to be horrid if true.
