AAA Announces Lucha World Cup

After several teases over the last few months AAA finally announced more details on the 2016 Lucha World Cup which we now know will take place on 06/03 and 06/05 this year. AAA has announced that the “preliminary rounds” will take place on 06/03 and the “Grand Finale” on 06/05. In the official press release AAA noted that there will be representatives from AAA, Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan, TNA in America, and Lucha Underground in America, but also noted that there will be “several companies that will participate in this world competition.” Another interesting note is that on the official poster they released alongside the logos of AAA, Lucha Underground, TNA, and NOAH are the logos for Japanese women promotions OZ Academy and WAVE. AAA did not mention those promotions in the press release but there have been rumors that AAA and Victoria are planning on doing a women’s Lucha World Cup alongside the main one this year.

Flamita Leaves AAA

In a strange twist this week AAA and Lucha Underground star Flamita/Fireball/Octagon Jr. announced, via his Facebook, that he was officially dropping the Octagon Jr. name and leaving AAA as a whole. Flamita commented on the altercation between and he and Octagon, and said that he respects Octagon but that Octagon had a problem with AAA and not Flamita and it should have stayed that way. He also said that he and his fans deserved more respect from Octagon than that. He said that he appreciates AAA for the opportunity that they gave him but he feels like he has the talent to make it on his own name rather than on the Octagon name. He said that he is independent and hinted at going back to Japan. He’s already been announced for some independent shows. One thing to note is that he appeared in Season Two of Lucha Underground (which hasn’t aired yet) as “Nightclaw” but has not appeared at all at any of the season three tapings so he may not be under any type of contract with Lucha Underground oddly. You would have to think he will now be a target for WWE’s Global Cruiserweight Series. Octagon has taken to Twitter to declare this a “victory” for himself and to gloat about making Octagon Jr. quit the name. That is probably the most unfortunate thing about this all. Octagon can now go around claiming victory and act as if it what he did was noble. Flamita has been nothing but class, the opposite of Octagon, throughout this whole thing. Hopefully this isn’t the last time we get to see Flamita on TV and at just 22 years old I highly doubt it is. The curse of the Octagon Jr. name continues.

Lucha Underground Stars Injured

At this past weekend’s Lucha Underground tapings Angelico, Matanza, and Jack Evans were all injured. Matanza suffered a pretty wicked cut on his arm during a spot where he punched out a window but he luckily didn’t tear any ligaments in the injury and only needed stitches. Angelico was injured the next day when he took a bad fall, injuring his elbow in what was believed to possibly be a fracture (no confirmation yet) while Evans was injured the same day with a broken jaw.

AAA Star Having Surgery

This week AAA and Lucha Underground star Hijo del Fantasma/King Cuerno announced that he was undergoing surgery for an undisclosed injury that will keep him out of the ring for some time. He has been out of the ring for both AAA and Lucha Underground since March and it had teased that he would be back soon a few weeks ago. He didn’t reveal what the injury was but I have seen promoters, Mucha Lucha ATL’s for example, make a comment that he had an injury that was keeping him from being booked for a while now.

Pentagon Pulled from American Show

AAA/Lucha Underground star Pentagon Jr. has recently been advertised for three separate events on 04/30 with one of them being for San Diego promotion Finest City Wrestling’s show in San Diego while the other two were events in Mexico. FCW announced, via their Facebook, that AAA has pulled Pentagon from the booking so he can appear on one of the shows in Mexico (with the other being canceled as well). FCW says that they are trying to get Fenix or Jack Evans to replace Pentagon on the show but considering the comments they’ve made public about AAA that might not be possible now. Dorian Roldan claims that the booking was done “properly through AAA” with others, Masked Republic for one, stating that Konnan had been getting guys like Pentagon booked in America and now AAA is refusing to allow Konnan to do so for their talents. It was also noted that since AAA has completely taken over Pentagon’s bookings the price to book him has gone up drastically as well (suggesting that AAA is taking a much bigger chunk out of the booking fee than Konnan was taking).

Pentagon and Fenix in Japan

AAA stars Pentagon Jr. and Fenix faced each other on the debut show of Japanese/Sumo star Akebono’s new promotion Oudou in Tokyo on 04/20. The two had what was said to be a fantastic match with Pentagon pinning Fenix following the Fear Factor. The fans were said to have been lukewarm to the two as the match started but they quickly got the crowd into the action. Hopefully video of the match will turn up soon. This was Pentagon’s debut in Japan and Fenix’s first appearance since he took part in a tour of Pro Wrestling NOAH in 2013. The promotion announced that Mil Mascaras will appear on their event in Tokyo in August. That is going to be a real big drop off in performance from Fenix/Pentagon to Mil Mascaras.

Hijo del Santo Beats AAA In Court

Back in 2009 AAA shocked the lucha world when they brought back El Hijo del Santo for a few appearances, after a bad falling out with the promotion years earlier, but the relationship didn’t last long as Santo sued AAA over a DVD AAA and Televisa released of that year’s TripleMania featuring Santo. Santo claimed that he never agreed to allow AAA to sell the show on DVD and AAA claimed Santo had verbally agreed to it. The case has been in limbo for years after AAA’s Marisela Pena, who is also a lawyer, demanded that Santo unmask in court to prove it was really El Hijo del Santo and not just some random person claiming to be him under the mask. Santo refused to remove his mask and that whether or not Santo should have to remove his mask to prove it is him has been up in the air for nearly a decade. It went all the way to Mexico’s Supreme Court this past week and the Supreme Court ruled that Santo, or any other luchador in the future, would have to unmask in court. They ruled that he could simply unmask before the judge and the defendant in the judge’s office. The Supreme Court also ruled in favor of Santo in the overall case but it hasn’t been revealed how much AAA will have to pay Santo.

Prince Puma Possibly Re-Signing With Lucha Underground

After it had been expected for the last few weeks that Prince Puma/Ricochet would be leaving Lucha Underground following season three, and rumors of him possibly signing with WWE, he appeared again at the most recent Lucha Underground tapings. The Wrestling Observer reported that Lucha Underground made him a really big offer to re-sign with the promotion and he is expected to take it. The deal will allow him to continue working in Japan and pay him a lot more than he would have made had he signed an NXT deal with WWE. Meltzer didn’t say whether he had actually signed the deal or not but said he was expected to stay and they shot some angles and storylines at the tapings to bring the Prince Puma character back.

Electroshock Quits

Right before AAA’s TV Taping on 04/29 Electroshock revealed on Twitter that he has quit AAA, again. Electroshock has a weird past couple of years with long stretches of him not appearing on TV at a time. His brother, Sharlie Rockstar, is in Elite right now so I would imagine he will show up there soon.

Lucha Underground 04/23 “Season 3 Tapings” Boyle Heights, CA Results
1) Lucha Underground Title Steel Cage Match: Johnny Mundo (c) def. Sexy Star to retain the title!
2) Battle of the Bulls Tournament Finals: The Mack def. PJ Black, Cage, & Jeremiah Gray (Sami Callihan) to earn a shot at the LU Title
3) Prince Puma & Tessa Blanchard def. Marty The Moth & Mariposa
4) Drago, Fenix, & Aerostar def. Paul London and two unknown masked luchadors
5) Johnny Mundo def. The Mack
6) Cage def. unknown masked luchador
7) Texano Jr. def. Joey Ryan
8) Death Match: Matanza fought Dragon Azteca Jr. to a NO CONTEST
* NOTES *
– The Cage Match was said to be really good with Sexy Star diving off the top of it. Mundo ripped off her mask and as she covered her face Mundo climbed over the cage to win. The Mack attacked Mundo after the match.
– The stipulation for the Battle of the Bulls Tournament was the winner would get a shot at the LU Title “in a few weeks.” It was an elimination match. Texano interfered and caused Cage to get eliminated and then Mack eliminated the other two to earn the show.
– The Prince Puma match may have been a dark match.
– Paul London and his boys were doing a weird gimmick where London was dressed like the Mad Hatter and the masked guys were wearing leather with t-shirts that said “Do It Like A Rabbit” on them. It was a comedy match. Kobra Moon was watching from the balcony and taunted Drago.
– Stipulation of the Mundo/Mack Match was that the winner got to pick the stipulation for their Title Match. Black and Evans helped Mundo win and Mundo picked an “All Night Long Match” (Iron Man Match).
– Mil Muertes and Catrina came out and attacked Vampiro. Prince Puma came out and tried to get involved but Vampiro ordered him to stay back, so this may be taped for before the Grave Consequences Match. Mil laid Vampiro out with a Flatliner.
– Sexy Star yelled at the unknown masked man that lost to Cage for facing Cage so there is some connection there with Sexy.
– Famous B came out to recruit Texano but Texano blew him off.
– The Matanza/Dragon match only went a few minutes when it was stopped after Matanza put his fist through a window causing him to suffer several bad cuts. This match will likely be re-taped. PJ Black and Johnny Mundo came out after the match and mooned the crowd. Dragon Azteca and Rey Misterio then ran out and laid them out.

Lucha Underground 04/24 “Season Three TV Tapings” Boyle Heights, CA Results
1) Jeremiah Gray def. Mil Muertes
2) PJ Black & Jack Evans def. Angelico & Son of Havoc
3) Kevin Kross def. Scorpio Sky
4) Best of Five Series Match #4: Texano Jr. def. Cage
5) Best of Five Series Match #5 Anything Goes Match: Cage def. Texano Jr.
6) Sexy Star def. Mariposa
7) Aerostar, Fenix, & Paul London def. Drago, Steve Pain, & Austin Matelson
8) Lucha Underground Title All Night Long Match: Johnny Mundo (c) fought The Mack to a DRAW
* NOTES *
– Mundo and The Mack had a big brawl to open the taping.
– Puma King caused Muertes to lose the match against Gray. They are taping so much out of order it is unknown if this is meant to be before the Grave Consequences Match or possibly Puma’s return after that match.
– Angelico suffered his elbow injury in the second match leading to the finish.
– Kross-Sky could have been a dark match. Kross is expected to sign with WWE so it is unlikely he will be back here.
– Texano-Cage was really quick after Cage’s head ran into the ring post causing a big cut. After the match Cueto came out and said he didn’t want to wait another week to see the finish of this series so he ordered the final match to be an Anything Goes Match and for it to take place immediately. They did a huge brawl with crazy chair shots and blood. Cage pinned Texano with a Steiner Screwdriver and then Cueto came out and said that he had an offer for Cage as his prize for winning so great that the crowd wouldn’t even get to hear it. He took Cage into his office so this will likely be a backstage segment only seen when the show airs.
– Kobra Moon was with Drago in his match and had him on a leash so something has happened, likely backstage or in a vignette, to bring those two together.
– Mundo-Mack went about 45 minutes with tons of crazy action. Mundo went up 2-1 on Mack and then after Mack did a dive to the floor Mundo faked an ankle injury. As EMTs checked on him Mundo sprung to his feet and attacked Mack leading to another pin to put him up 3-1. Sexy Star then appeared as a member of the band that was on the balcony and attacked Mundo. Son of Havoc came out with some beers as it looked like Mack was exhausted and pooured them on him to bring him back to life in a funny spot. Mack ended up tying the score up and then he dove off of a ladder and put Mundo through a table. Just as he was about to pin Mundo the bell rang as time ran out. Cueto was pissed that it ended in a draw and said that at the next taping they would face each other again in a match where there must be a winner.

6) El Mesias def. La Parka Jr.
* NOTES *
– Bengala II was in Suicide/Argenis corner and Ricky Marvin in Averno/Chessman’s corner. They got into a brawl while the tecnicos and rudos started fouling each other. Stupid finish.
– A video aired before the third match showing Halloween beaten and tied up in the locker room. It is revealed that Kahn del Mal led a group of the Perros del Mal guys in attacking him. Daga pinned Lider and then Pentagon pinned Daga to earn the first spot on a team in the Lucha World Cup. La Familia came out and rescued Halloween.
– Mesias came out to try and cost Texano the match in the fourth after Garza was eliminated but Garza stopped him. Texano then pinned Taurus and qualified for the Lucha Cup too.
– La Familia got counted out in the Semi-Main after Perros del Mal came out and brawled with them to the back. Perros del Mal threw them into the back of an ambulance and drove away.
– Cage was injured and had to miss the Main Event so it became a singles match. Cage interfered to help Mesias win.

CMLL

Kamaitachi Done with CMLL

It seems that Japanese star Kamaitachi is done with CMLL for the time being as he is now living in New Jersey in the United States. Typically Japanese wrestlers go on excursions of Mexico and then the United States, but Kamaitachi’s run in Mexico has been a lot longer than most expected. He is expected to return to New Japan either later this year or early next year. He made his debut with ROH on 04/30 in a loss against ACH.

CMLL Returning to Fight Network

This week Canadian television network announced that they were adding a CMLL show to their schedule starting 05/05 with a weekly show airing at 9 PM (eastern). This is CMLL’s return to Figth Network where they had a show a few years ago. Fight Network announced it as a “multi year deal” with the promotion. They just debuted a AAA show a couple of weeks ago as well.

INDY & OTHER NEWS

Hijo del Octagon’s Idenity Revealed

This past week several websites revealed what most of us had suspected, the man that Octagon unveiled as the new Hijo del Octagon isn’t really his son. He is an Indy wrestler, Marabunta Jr., that Octagon has convinced to take up the mantle of the Octagon name. There is some backlash being thrown at Octagon for the deception (which isn’t a rare deception in Lucha) and by the end of the week Marabunta Jr. said that he wanted to continue to work under that name to honor his father. So Hijo del Octagon never even debuted under the name.
