Lucha World Cup News

AAA held a press conference this week to make more announcements regarding next month’s Lucha World Cup. They made no mention of PPV so it looks like that whole thing might be off and Court Bauer, of MLW Radio, has been saying that it definitely won’t be happening. They did announce several of the teams for the tournament.

Team Pro Wrestling NOAH/Japan will consist of Taiji Ishimori, Naomichi Marufuji, and Maybach Taniguchi. Marufuji could be considered a Jr. Heavyweight legend in Japan and has worked for AAA many times in the past, with the last time coming in 2008. He and KENTA, who wrestles as Hideo Itami in WWE NXT now, defended the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles in AAA back in 2004 against Mr. Aguila and Juventud Guerrera. Ishimori is one of the most talented junior heavyweights currently in Japan and was a member of Team NOAH in last year’s Lucha World Cup. He has wrestled several times in Mexico for both AAA and Toryumon Mexico (he was trained by Ultimo Dragon). Taniguchi has never worked in Mexico and is more of a heavyweight style wrestler. He does wear a Great Muta style mask though which will likely get over with the Lucha crowd.

Team Zero-1/Ouduo (Team Japan II) will be Masato Tanaka, Akebono, and Ikuto Hidaka which will probably be the weirdest team in the tournament. Tanaka is a former ECW and FMW World Champion and at one point was one of the better wrestlers in Japan. He has slowed down considerably in recent years and this will be his debut in Mexico. Akebono is a 500 lb. former sumo champion and All Japan Triple Crown Champion. He has worked for Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon Mexico in the past and honestly he is terrible in the ring. Hidaka will be the work horse of this team and in the 2000’s he was one of the best junior heavyweights/high flyers in the entire world. I honestly haven’t seen him work in a few years and he is in his 40’s now, but at one point he was one of the top Japanese wrestlers working in American Indy promotions. This is going to be, shockingly, his debut in Mexico. He had a series of matches with Super Crazy in ECW, Japan, and on the American Indies in the late 90’s and early 2000’s that were incredible.

Team AAA will be Pentagon Jr., Texano Jr., and Psycho Clown. The Mexican Legends team will be La Parka Jr., El Canek, and Blue Demon Jr. in what will be probably one of the worst teams. The third Mexican team will be called “Team Mexico Internacional” and will be led by Rey Misterio Jr. who will be the team captain. He led The Dream Team (with Myzteziz and Alberto el Patron) to a win last year. His partners will be Lucha Underground star Dragon Azteca Jr. (Rey Horus) and AAA’s Dr. Wagner Jr. as well. Wagner will debut in Lucha Underground later in season two as well. This will be Dragon Azteca Jr.’s debut in AAA and his first appearance outside of Lucha Underground under that name. He still works on the Indies as Rey Horus.

Team TNA was revealed as Ethan Carter III, Tyrus (formerly Brodus Clay), and Eli Drake. EC3 has only worked once in Mexico, on a WWE tour while Tyrus appeared for Rey Misterio Jr.’s “Viva el Rey Tour” last year. Eli Drake does have a lot of lucha and Mexican experience. Before he signed with WWE a few years ago he was a member of the Border Patrol rudo faction in both Todos x Todos in Mexico and PWR in America as Shaun Ricker. He’s been working for TNA since 2015.

Team Rest of the World was revealed as Mil Muertes (El Mesias), TNA’s Rockstar Spud, and Puerto Rican star Apolo. Muertes is of course a long time AAA star in El Mesias and this is actually the first time he has ever appeared outside of Lucha Underground under the Mil Muertes character. It is going to be interesting to see how the AAA fans take that character, considering most will now that it is Mesisa under the mask. Spud is a very small X-Division wrestler from the UK and is good depending on who he is the ring with, but had TNA sent Mark Andrews (another British wrestler) it would have meant for a better match as he does a ton of lucha style submissions along with his high flying. Apolo has spent the majority of his career in his home Puerto Rico but was in TNA for several years as well and has made a lot of appearances in Mexico over the years.

Team Lucha Underground was revealed as Chavo Guerrero Jr., Johnny Mundo, and Brian Cage. Cage has been a regular in AAA since last year’s Lucha World Cup and is a current member of Team Trump in AAA. Mundo was a regular last year from the World Cup all the way into December. He and Rey Misterio Jr. had been feuding when AAA stopped using hi out of the blue. Chavo has actually never worked for AAA in his entire career despite all of his uncles (Eddie, Mando, and Hector) and his father (Chavo Sr.) having worked there at some point. This will mean that every one of the members of the Guerrero family have appeared in AAA except for Gory (who died before AAA started).

They also announced two of the teams for the Women’s Tournament and announced the other teams later in the week. Team Japan will be Jushi legend Aja Kong, Yuki Miyazaki, & Natsu Sumire. At one point Kong was one of the best female wrestlers in the world but she is in her 40’s now. She has worked for both AAA and CMLL in Mexico in the past, but has not appeared in Mexico since 2000. This will probably be one of her last appearances in Mexico before she retires. Miyazaki worked for AAA back in 1999 very briefly while this is Sumire’s debut. Sumire is only 23 years old but it is weird that they wouldn’t use three Stardom girls that just started with Lucha Underground, for Team Japan.

Team Mexico will consist of Mari Apache, Lady Apache, and Fabi Apache as they team together for the first time ever. Fabi and Lady Apache teamed up numerous times in the mid 2000’s but Mari and Lady have never been in the ring together. Lady Apache was married to Fabi and Mari’s father, Gran Apache, previously but left AAA in 2005 after her divorce with Gran Apache. She spent the majority of her time after that in CMLL but left last year. The weirder thing here is that she is currently (or the last we knew she was) married to Electroshock who just left AAA. Team Canada will consist of AAA’s Taya Valkyrie, TNA’s Allie (Cherry Bomb), and Indy wrestler KC Spinelli. Allie signed with TNA last month and Spinelli has spent the majority of her career working Canadian Indies. Spinelli was trained by Lance Storm alongside Taya. The final women’s team will be a Team USA consisting of Santana Garrett, Sienna, and Cheerleader Melissa. Santana Garrett is a former TNA star (as Brittany) and is considered one of the top female wrestlers on the Indy scene in America right now. She is also very visually pleasing so she will be popular here. Sienna recently just signed with TNA and is being pushed as one of the top Knockouts in the company. She is a longtime star on the American Indies as Allysin Kay. Cheerleader Melissa also previously worked in TNA as both Raesha Saed (the manager of Awesome Kong) and Alissa Flash. She is currently signed to Lucha Underground as the masked Mariposa. It is odd that they are using El Mesias and Rey Horus here as the Lucha Underground characters but not Melissa. Melissa is the only member of the team with experience in Mexico as she has worked for various Indies in Mexico as well as AAA. She also has wrestled a lot for California Lucha promotion PWR and is a former PWR Women’s Champion. Legendary luchadors Black Terry, Solar I, Villano V, Mascara Ano 2000, Universo 2000, & Cien Caras will be judges for the tournament, giving out awards for the tournament. Victoria Beer, the tournament sponsor, said that the 2017 Lucha World Cup would take place in Japan.

Konnan Breaks His Silence on AAA

During this week’s MLW Podcast Konnan finally spoke out about his split with AAA/Lucha Underground. Konnan admitted that he hadn’t publicly spoken out about the issue because his partner, Court Bauer, still worked for AAA, but now that Court has left AAA as well he has no problem speaking out. Konnan spoke on a liteny of issues but the primary focus was on that of the treatment of luchadors by Dorian Roldan and the rest of AAA. Konnan claims that Dorian promised several luchadors, including Hijo del Fantasma and Flamita, that they could leave AAA free and clear whenever they wanted to, but after they signed their contracts he took back his word. He also says that Dorian had Lucha Underground’s lawyers threaten the Lucha Underground wrestlers that also work for AAA if they wanted to try and work for another promotion in Mexico especially if Konnan started his own group. He says that there actually is no clause in the contracts but none of the Lucha Underground guys want to rock the boat and test it because of fear of losing their spots. He says that in AAA guys get no food or water at shows and are forced to take long bus rides during trips while they get rental cars and catering and hotels provided by Lucha Underground along with much better pay. He says that Hijo del Fantasma had an offer from WWE but when he approached AAA about wanting to go they told him he couldn’t because of his contract. He also mentioned that Fantasma will be out of the ring for two months due to back surgery that he just had. Konnan spoke on the issue with Flamita and AAA, and said that AAA tried to get Flamita to take the role of Myzteziz Jr. before he agreed to do the Octagon Jr. gimmick. He says that AAA wanted a Myzteziz Jr. to spite Myzteziz for leaving AAA. It sounds like the Konnan/AAA relationship is damaged beyond repair right now, but it was believed that the Pena/Konnan relationship was that damaged back in the late 90’s and they were still able to repair it eventually so you never know.

Aerostar Coming to AAW

This week American Indy promotion AAW announced that they were bringing AAA’s Aerostar in for their 06/17 event in Illinois in which Drago had already been announced for.

Pentagon vs. Matanza in Cali, vs. Raymond Rowe in Texas

California Indy promotion Fighting Spirit Pro announced that their 06/07 event in Merced, CA will see the Fighting Spirit Champion Jeff Cobb (Matanza in Lucha Underground) defend his title against fellow Lucha Underground star Pentagon Jr. on the show. Brian Cage will also be appearing. Pentagon will also face ROH star Raymond Rowe at an Indy event in Arlington, TX on 06/10 at VIP Wrestling’s “Hard To Kill” with the VIP Championship on the line.

Fenix Wins Perros del Mal Title

This past weekend AAA’s Fenix defeated his brother Pentagon Jr. in Texas to win the Perros del Mal Light Heavyweight Title, which Pentagon won in Atlanta last month, meaning that the proposed Pentagon vs. Tigre del Ring Title vs. Title Match in Mucha Lucha ATL will not be happening now (more on that next).

AAA/Lucha Underground Stars Returning to Atlanta

This week Amercian Indy promotion Mucha Lucha Atlanta announced that AAA/Lucha Underground stars Pentagon Jr., Fenix and Drago would be returning for their 07/17 “MLA9: The Reckoning” event in Norcross, GA. They all appeared at MLA’s last event in April in a Fatal 4-Way for the vacant Perros del Mal Jr. Heavyweight Title along with MLA Champion Tigre del Ring. After the match Pentagon Jr., who won the PdM Title, challenged Tigre del Ring to a Title vs. Title Match for the next MLA event. Fenix defeated Pentagon for that title this past weekend in Texas and MLA announced this week that the title match will now be a 3-Way Dance between Tigre del Ring, Fenix and Pentagon Jr. with both the MLA Title and the PdM Light Heavyweight Title on the line! They also announced that that DTU’s Septimo Dragon and former AAA star Mr. 450 would be returning for the 07/17 event. Both appeared last month as well with Dragon having a show stealing performance against Lucha Underground’s AR Fox and Mr. 450 was involved in a wild Trios Match. Also, CHIKARA’s Shynron, who appeared for TNA earlier this year, has been announced for the show along with a local trio of luchadors called The Black Fear (Misterio Negro, Blackstar and . I haven’t been able to find out much about these guys but they are three masked wrestlers that have masks and gear that look like a combination of the old Los Vipers group in AAA and the Los Guerreros del Infierno group in CMLL. They have a really cool look. MLA has also announced that Sadico will be appearing at the event. Sadico is a veteran luchador that has worked for AAA, IWL, and DTU in the past.

Lady Maravilla Quits AAA

Lucha site KronoSport announced that Lady Maravilla has quit AAA after debuting with the promotion in October. She had only wrestled a handful of matches in AAA.

The winner of the tournament will then face the winner of Misterio/Mundo as the final match of the season. Dario also announced that Matanza will not be taking part in the Cuerto Cup as punishment for allowing Misterio to pin him in Aztec Warfare.
– Bestia and Steve Pain have different masked gimmicks but it is unknown what their names are. Drago turned on his partners to allow Kobra Moon’s team to win and then Kobra put a leash on him (which would explain an angle from the last taping, since these are all out of order).
– Famous B tried to get Kross to allow him to be his manager but Kross punched him.
– Vampiro handed Puma a brick in his match with Mil and Puma accepted it and nailed Muertes with it leading to the finish.
– They reshot the Azteca-Matanza match from the last taping, where Matanza badly cut open his arm, and ended up having a crazy brawl. Misterio came out to help Azteca and they ended up crashing Matanza through the roof of Dario’s office.

8) Cueto Cup Second Round: Dante Fox def. Son of Havoc
* NOTES *
– Most of the taping was centered on the Cueto Cup matches.
– Mariposa came out during Fenix/Marty and tried to help Marty win but ring announcer, Melissa Santos, stopped her. This led to Marty and Mariposa beating the hell out of Fenix after the match and even stabbing Fenix with a fork that Marty had in a “Aztec Pride” lunch box. Santos was crying over Fenix.
– King Mal, who is Steve Pain’s new character, beat Cage after Cage got pissed off at the referee and clotheslined him.
– Puma/Black was said to have been fantastic and Puma looks to be possibly turning rudo as he is playing a much darker character.
– Before Fox/Havoc started a new character, Son of Madness, attacked Son of Havoc and beat him down. Dario came out and said that Havoc could fight Fox right now or lose his spot in the tournament. This led to Fox winning because Havoc was too injured.
– They did a segment to close the show building up Rey vs. Mundo with Mundo really trashing Rey and making fun of how small he is. This led to a big brawl between the two and then Prince Puma and Pentagon got involved as well. This led to pretty much everyone in the Dario Cup to come out and have a massive brawl. Dragon Azteca Jr. ended up doing a crazy dive off the bleachers onto everyone.

– Rey’s family was sitting ringside during the Mundo-Azteca match. Mundo started taunting Rey’s son, Dominick, after the match and even got in his face. This led to Rey jumping Mundo only to get beaten down by Mundo and his group.

CMLL

Los Ingobernables Done

At Friday’s Arena Mexico show CMLL ran an angle ending Los Ingobernables. Rush, Pierroth, and La Mascara (the most recent version of the group) were facing the team of Rey Bucanero, Shocker, and El Terrible. Mascara suddenly, for some odd reason, decided he liked Shocker and didn’t want to fight him. Rush and Pierroth beat Mascara down after the match and announced they were starting their own group (they may actually keep the Ingobernables name but it is going to be a family based unit) while Mascara and Shocker are going to start the 100th version of the Guapos group together. Los Ingobernables was never the same after Sombra left and replacing him with Rush’s father, Pierroth, was one of the worst decisions CMLL has ever made. Pierroth is easily one of the worst luchadors in Mexico and is only in that spot because he is Rush’s father. The group went from one of the hottest acts in Lucha to a shell of itself very quickly after Sombra went to WWE. The Japanese version, Los Ingobernables de Japon, is still going strong and has led to Tetsuya Naito becoming one of the hottest wrestlers in Japan. The Guapos group was very popular in the early 2000’s but no one has given a damn the numerous times they’ve done the group again, both in AAA and CMLL, since the mid 2000’s.

ELITE Possibly Done with Liga Elite Again

When ELITE announced yet another Liga Elite tournament pretty much everyone involve with Lucha knew that the tournament would never actually come to a conclusion. Now it seems that was very accurate as ELITE has announced Battle Royal on 05/21 to crown the first ELITE Heavyweight Champion (Liga Elite was supposed to crown that champion) and no future Liga Elite matches have been announced. Of course ELITE nor CMLL have made any mention about the tournament because that’s how they do business. They are never going to officially announce the tournament is over. They will just simply stop doing the matches like they did last time.

CMLL Cancels TV Show

This week it was revealed that CMLL is canceling their Saturday “Sabado Retros” show and will no longer be running out of Arena Coliseo anymore, at least for the immediate future. That will mean Arena Coliseo will not host Lucha events weekly for the first time since the 40’s. Arena Coliseo was the first arena that CMLL founder Salvador Lutteroth built in 1943 to be the primary home for CMLL (then EMLL) events rather than having to pay to rent buildings in Mexico City. Arena Coliseo was actually the first arena in Mexico to feature air conditioning and was CMLL’s primary arena until CMLL built Arena Mexico in 1956. Boxing will still be hosted in Arena Coliseo going forward and CMLL claims that they will start running here again in the future, but who knows when that will be. Toryumon Mexico, Ultimo Dragon’s promotion, is actually running their annual “DragonMania” event at Arena Coliseo on 05/28 so that will likely be the final Arena Coliseo wrestling event for some time.

Volador got the win for his team with a pin on Barreta. Barreta got his pin back, however, on the next night as he defeated Volador in each man’s first tournament match.

INDY & OTHER NEWS

La Sombra Gets New Name in WWE

This week WWE star Manny Andrade, La Sombra in CMLL, announced that his name has changed officially to Andrade “Cien” Almas. This likely means he will soon be on NXT TV or they might be holding him off until the Cruiserweight Tournament. He has been working NXT house shows ever since he was signed.

Jinzo Changes His Name

Indy/DTU star Jinzo announced this week that he was changing his name to Ronnie Mendoza. He had formerly worked as Tribal, under a mask, before he started working as Jinzo. He isn’t actually related to any of the Mendoza/Villano family that I am aware of.

Laredo Kid, Flamita Coming to AIW

This week Cleveland Indy promotion AIW announced that they were bringing in former AAA star Laredo Kid for their 05/28 event in Cleveland where he will face TNA’s Zema Ion. They also announced former AAA and Dragon Gate star Flamita will be debuting for the promotion at their 06/17 event outside of Cleveland.

Blue Demon TV Show Taping

This past week the Blue Demon TV show was taping scenes for episodes inside the historic Arena Coliseo, which isn’t running CMLL shows right now, and they revealed that the show will be more a “historical fiction drama” rather than a biographical show about Demon’s life. Some of the scenes they were filming in Arena Coliseo was a match with the “World Welterweight Champion” called “Ala Dorada” which was not a real wrestler, but is likely meant to be El Santo. Of course El Hijo del Santo is probably making it difficult for them to use his father in the show because he’s El Hijo del Santo.

Silver King Starting His Own Tournament

This week Silver King, who promotes shows in his hometown of Torreon, announced that he was going to start his own tournament called Copa Junior Elite with the idea that it will feature all second (or third) generation luchadors. He said it will have a Japanese style “league” format with two groups and each win giving a guy two points. He said Group A would have Hijo del Ninja, Silver King, Hijo de L.A. Park, Hijo de Fishman, Gran Kalifa Jr., Halcon Suriano Jr., & Stukita while Group B would consist of Shocker, Dr. Wagner Jr., Dr. Wagner III, Hijo del Espectro Jr., Hijo de Dos Caras, Antrax Jr., and Hijo del Medico Asesino. That is obviously some pretty interesting matchups but there is also AAA and CMLL talent in that tournament and this will likely never happen.

– El Canek Jr. used to wrok for CMLL in the early-mid 2000’s but has only worked small Indies since 2005. The Huracan Ramirez Jr., he faced in the Main Event, is not the same Huracan Ramirez Jr. that worked a try out last month in Dragon Gate. This is the 50+ year old Huracan Ramirez Jr. that worked in UWA and CMLL in the 80’s and Promo Azteca in the 90’s.
