Laurel Van Ness

Reports about Laurel Van Ness (Chelsea Green) made the rounds among the wrestling media last week indicating she may have requested a release from Impact Wrestling.

According to a new report by Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Green did indeed request a release from her current Impact contract at the TV tapings in Ottawa and did so just hours after she captured the vacant Knockouts Championship.

The company is currently airing the tournament on Pop TV the next few weeks and were described as being “really upset” with her request, more so that she did so after winning the championship and they had already taped weeks of TV about the tournament. The same report indicated Green admitted making the mistake of not asking for her release on the first day of the tapings and then going through scheduled plans for TV.

Some sort of agreement was reportedly made between both Green and Impact officials that she wasn’t supposed to talk publicly about requested the release until she dropped the championship. Impact is scheduled to hold TV tapings in early January in Orlando, so it would appear she will be brought in to drop the title then unless plans change. Either way, the story got out and the company denied her release request at this time.

Does it really matter? The Knockouts championship is a hot potato and everyone on the roster quits or gets rehired multiple time. Just look at Mickie James, Madison Rayne, Angelina Love, Gail Kim, Taryn Terrell, and many more…I’m sure they’ll find someone to put the title on for the next set of tapings that will take them into July probably.

In the long run, it probably doesn’t matter a lot. It’s just a bad look as far as professionalism to win a belt then ask for your release from the company. Now the company has to trash any plans they might have had for Laurel’s title run and have her drop the title. As for Laurel, it means she has to work at least another show for a company she wants to be released from when they would have presumably let her go free and clear after the last set of tapings had they known and put the belt on someone else.
