Impact tapings

Austin Aries returned as part of tonight’s Impact tapings in Orlando, Florida.

The former ROH and WWE star Aries went on to defeat Eli Drake to win the Impact Global Championship. Aries was part of TNA in the early Spike TV days from 2005-2007 under his “Austin Starr” gimmick and later from 2011 to 2015, winning the then TNA Title in 2012.

Aries was recently a part of WWE from 2016 to the summer of 2017 where he was released from the company after a run in the 205 Live brand and a short stay in NXT. He had been taking independent bookings including Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore promotion.

Wrestleview.com will have a full spoiler report from the Impact TV tapings later tonight.

  1. Agreed, and truth is there isn’t really one wrestler / free agent that would really bring much in the way of ratings to Impact right now. Perhaps Goldberg after his recent WWE stint (of course he wouldn’t sign with them but just an example of who). Few wrestlers can bump ratings alone for a promotion anyway but Impact’s issues as we all know go from ratings to no live events to…I’m split on Aries being back because I do believe had WWE used him well on the main roster he could have delivered in the ring and mic in a big way (not ratings big but show big). According to google searches his net worth is 5 million and so like Del Rio I think he enjoys the idea of being a free agent, getting some tv exposure and working a lighter schedule. More power to him but to your point, he isn’t a game changer for Impact as I don’t feel any one free agent talent is right now – it took a village earlier in TNA’s history.

  2. Impact is where he belongs. And “Austin Starr” was just used when Kevin Nash was supposedly trying to “help” the X Division, including turning Sonjay Dutt into some sort of guru character. He went by Austin Aires in Impact before (and after) that ill-conceived storyline.

  3. I’m glad Aires is back, as they need whoever they can get. But they should have kept Eli Drake as the champ longer.
