“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka is a legend in the pro wrestling business in every sense of the word. Snuka has traveled the world and seen success in both team and singles action.

In tag team action, Snuka formed very successful tandems with Paul Orndorff (NWA World Tag Team Champions), “Freebird” Terry Gordy (NWA National Tag Team Champions), Ray Stevens, Dutch Savage (NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Champions) and Bruiser Brody (All Japan Real World Tag League Champions, 1981).

In singles action Snuka had notable success and won many championships in Japan , NWA Pacific Northwest, NWA Mid-Atlantic, NWA Georgia Championship Wrestling and Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW).

However, Snuka is known most well for his early to mid 80’s stint in the World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (WWF/E). From his early days challenging Bob Backlund for the WWWF Title, to his break-up with Captain Lou Albano, to his legendary feuds with the “Magnificent” Don Muraco and Rowdy Roddy Piper, Snuka’s popularity was only rivaled by Hulk Hogan himself in the mid-80s, with whom he helped create a new and increased interest in the world of wrestling that saw the national expansion of WWF/E.

It was Snuka’s unique, high risk Superfly Splash off the top rope that ushered in a whole new genre of high flying action into the sport, and it is a style that still thrives today. Snuka was named Best Flying Wrester in 1981 and awarded Best Wrestling Maneuver in 1981 & 1983 by the readers of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

But when fans of the Northeast think of Jimmy Snuka, there is ONE image that comes to mind and that is the Superfly Splash of the top of the Steel Cage. Whether he did it in his matches against Bob Backlund or Don Muraco, Jimmy Snuka left an indelible mark on the minds of wrestling fans.

The word legend is used very loosely in wrestling, but no one would dispute its application in regard to Jimmy Snuka. Come out to the TWA on April 11 at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees , New Jersey and re-live the memories with the one and only “Superfly!!!”
