WSU On The Road News Update

WSU, the leader in womens wrestling and the promotion that brings you more womens wrestling than any other group in the country today, returned with two more “On The Road” matches this past weekend.

The longest reigning & defending champion in all of womens wrestling today, WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez, who recently surpassed her 500th day as champion and making her 28th World Title defense, defeated Tina San Antonio to retain the championship on 7/23 in Union City, NJ at EVOLVE.

Martinez increased her win/loss record in EVOLVE to 4-0, previously defeating Niya, Sumie Sakai & Brittney Savage.

However, after the match, Martinez asked for more competition and again challenged Amazing (Awesome) Kong. This time, over the video screen, Awesome Kong accepted the challenge. WSU & EVOLVE officials have signed the match. On 9/11, in Rahway, NJ, Mercedes Martinez, if still champion, will defend the World Title against Amazing Kong.

We say “if still champion”, because Mercedes Martinez is scheduled to defend the WSU World Championship at an ICW event on 8/7, when she faces her most high profile challenger to date – MICKIE JAMES. If James is to win the WSU World Championship, James will be signed to give the winner of Martinez/Kong a World Title shot at a future WSU event.

If Martinez is no longer champion, Martinez/Kong will be a number 1 contenders match to the WSU World Title. Champion or not, Martinez wants this match with Kong to prove that she is the greatest womens wrestler in the world today. However, Kong is no push-over, and guarantees to put up the biggest fight to date in Martinez’s EVOLVE career.

However, as things are right now, Kong vs Martinez is signed as a WSU World Title match and will be promoted that way unless something changes.

If that’s not enough for you, the current number 1 contender & 2010 WSU Uncensored Rumble winner is waiting in the wings. Jazz will get a shot at whoever the champion may be – Martinez, James or Kong at the next WSU Union City event, which we hope to announce sometime later this week.

The world title picture in WSU never slows down and it is a true testament to Martinez’s ability that she has been able to survive and defend for such an extraordinary period of time.

In our other “On The Road” match, WSU Spirit Champion Brittney Savage w/Rick Cataldo, representing the Cosmo Club defeated Tina San Antonio on 7/24 at an NYWC event. Savage was able to put Tina San Antonio away in a highly contested match after interference from Rick Cataldo followed up by a diamond cutter.

Tina San Antonio, who got opportunities at both championships this weekend, came up short in both attempts. However, critics & fans have noticed an improvement in her ability. TSA, a rookie, is making strides and making a name for herself. TSA, considered the stronger half of her Belle’s Saints tag team with Marti Belle, held up her own in singles competition.

WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez told WSUWrestling.com:
“While I was able to defeat Tina this weekend, I see a bright future for this rookie. Winning & losing is not only done in the ring, but it is also done outside the ring. Tina holds her own and respects this business. She has a lot to learn, but seems willing to learn. WSU has always been a place where rookies have been able to get an opportunity. I mean, just look at where Brittney Savage is now. Nobody knew who she was when she debuted two years ago. With hard work, I can see Tina growing in this company.”

Brittney Savage wasn’t as kind:
Who cares about Tina San Antonio? And I don’t want to be questioned about Rick Cataldo’s actions in our match. Tina has alot to learn and if she is going to try to enter the Spirit Championship ranks, she will be eating diamond cutters all day long! Go back to Texas or where ever you came from Tina!”

WSU will return with a co-show with NWS on 8/6 which will be headlined by ANGEL ORSINI VS AMAZING KONG! For more details, check out WSUWrestling.com & NWSWrestling.com

Then on 8/7, in the most high profile WSU World Title match yet, WSU World Champion Mercedes Martinez will defend against Mickie James. Check out ICWZone.com. This show will sell out, as the last ICW show sold out. Make sure to order tickets in advance to what already is a star-studded show with Homicide, Jerry Lynn, Amazing Red & more.

Don’t forget, WSU also released four brand new DVDs. Support WSU by purchasing DVDs. Check out the brand new WSUVideo.com today.
