Ricky Morton: Nash ‘wasn’t going to beat me’

You ever seen the Saturday-morning cartoons where something falls to the ground and breaks into a million pieces, Ricky Morton asks.
After he was powerbombed by Kevin Nash in the main event at the AWE Night of Legends pay-per-view, “I’m telling you, I felt that way,” Morton said.
Even before he hit the mat with the force of a car accident, though, Morton knew that he was going to “get up, no matter what.” And if you ask Morton, Nash knew that, too.
“Maybe he could have knocked me completely out, but he didn’t. He realized what he was going to have to do to beat me, so he just went the other way with it,” said Morton, who was declared the winner after Nash left the ring following the powerbomb and was counted out by special referee Ronnie Garvin.
Nash, who left AWE for WWE following the Night of Legends pay-per-view, hasn’t commented publicly on the Morton match. Some observers have speculated that Nash left in frustration after delivering several finishers to Morton and not getting a 1-2-3.
Morton sidestepped a question on that in an interview with AWE’s Chris Graham.
“It come to a point because I was saying that no matter what it took, he wasn’t going to beat me. I wasn’t going to give up. I wasn’t going to let them count me out. Because I was ready for that night,” Morton said.
“If you watch the match, look at Kevin Nash’s eyes. He’s a man. We didn’t sit down and go over no finish. We didn’t sit there and do things. We went to the ring,” Morton said.
Asked if he was satisfied with how the match turned out, Morton said “being satisfied wasn’t the point of the thing.”
“The point of the thing was to let him know that I was man enough to step in the ring with him,” Morton said.
“I was satisfied that the match turned out the way it did. Basically because I didn’t get killed. Kevin Nash is a seven-foot monster. I’m not trying to insult anybody’s intelligence. A lot of that match was stiff, it was hard. He laid in, I laid in. I threw the first punch, but I had to. I had to let him know that I was for real. He answered in a way that let me know that he was for real back. The outcome of the match was that he got counted out because he knew that I wasn’t going to give up. It wasn’t going to be that way. I wasn’t going to put him over, and he wasn’t going to put me over,” Morton said.
The ultimate satisfaction for Morton was the sense of mutual respect that he and Nash both left Night of Legends with for the other.
“He respected me, and I respected him. He could have knocked 10 of my teeth out. Understand me? But for him to beat me, he was going to have to do that. He hit me with everything he had, and I took it like a man. Put it this way – I took a butt-whupping like a man,” Morton said.
