Former ECW star Axl Rotten passes away at age 44

Former ECW star Axl Rotten (Brian Knighton) was found dead in a motel on Thursday in Baltimore, Maryland according to a report by PWInsider. Rotten was 44 years old.

Knighton is best known for his run in ECW from 1993 to 1999. He was part of WWE’s ECW One Night Stand reunion event in June 2005 and remained active on the indepedent wrestling scene. Rotten was also part of TNA’s own ECW reunion back in 2010 for the Hardcore Justice PPV event and worked seldom in the last few years.

WWE issued a statement on Thursday night regarding his passing.

“WWE is saddened to learn of reports that Brian Knighton, best known for competing in ECW as Axl Rotten from 1993 to 1999, has passed away. WWE extends its condolences to Knighton’s family, friends and fans.”
