Here are some of the highlights of Joel’s exclusive interview, provided by The Mayhem’s correspondent, Paterson From New Jersey:

After being welcomed to The Mayhem by The Big Mosh, Blade, & Joel’s former ECW colleague/The Mayhem’s National WWE Correspondent, Jim Molineaux, Joel began his MNM appearance in true Gertner fashion: by mentioning the impending breakup of reality stars Jon & Kate and how their show itself was a work. Molineaux shared some interesting ECW insight & analysis while “breaking bread” with Joel, since their last meeting was at the original WWE/ECW One Night Stand. “The idea behind Joel really was to say the most-outrageous thing & try to make Big Dick Dudley laugh.”

Joel will be appearing at the “Legends Of The Arena” event this Saturday night (at the former ECW Arena in South Philadelphia) to benefit various cancer charities, but Joel himself has not been in the public eye as of late. Many members of “The Mayhem Nation” & fans across the globe have inquired about Joel’s whereabouts since the departure of ECW. “Since then (One Night Stand), I have been semi-retired & taking it easy. Still living the dream but off TV. Ran some shows in Connecticut in 2006 & really haven’t done much since then.” Regarding the The Arena show this weekend, “I was contacted back in March to a reunion in Allentown as a late-minute replacement. Did that, had a blast, got to see everybody, and that’s where I saw Francine, and she told about the show coming up this weekend, asked me if I could do it, and of course, I said yes.”

Loyal, passionate, & hardcore ECW fans are still around hoping for the rebirth of the company that they grew to love in its heyday. And on television, it seemed like everyone was having a good time working for the original revolution that was “extreme.” Mosh & Blade wanted to know some of the personal memories that Joel had of his time working in ECW. “It was ridiculous. It was some of the best times of my life. My first day in was three days after my 20 birthday, so the whole first half of my twenties was being part of something that I started following as a fan. It was literally a dream come true, and as you could imagine, it was a blast to be a part of it.”

With Tommy Dreamer’s ECW Championship win, many people get nostalgic & think back to the original ECW, but in a recent article by Paul Heyman for The UK Sun, Vince McMahon almost fired Tommy Dreamer & most of the ECW Originals, when ECW returned as a brand for the WWE. The question posed to Joel was does he see Heyman returning to the business at some point & how does he personally feel about Dreamer getting his due throughout his entire career within World Wrestling Entertainment. “I can’t imagine him (Heyman) spending the rest of his life away from the business. He’s devoted so much of his life to it, he started at such an early age. I think their is definitely a place in the business for him, and there is something that the industry definitely lacks that maybe he could provide.” On Tommy’s WWE run, “It’s interesting to think about with Tommy because in the original ECW, Tommy’s role, and he would be the first one to say this…he never really wanted the title. Tommy’s role was to always be the babyface chasing the title. And that’s where the magic was.” And finally his opinion of this current ECW/Dreamer capturing the cold at Extreme Rules, “It is so far removed from the original anyway, that’s it’s almost like, to try to stick to the original ECW is, I don’t know. The best thing they could have did with Tommy is give him the title like he did, because it shows that they are taking him seriously & that he’s getting the focus that he deserves. I’m happy for him, and I think it was a great idea.”

The Dudley Boyz (currently Team 3-D) were the most the successful tag team in ECW history, if not in pro-wrestling history. Rumors always run rampant that Brother Ray & Brother Devon may or may not return to the WWE after leaving the company several years ago. Will “The Dudleys” return to the “E,” and has their post-ECW/WWE run surprised Joel? “I think they’re a great part of TNA. I think they provide an unbelievable stability for TNA as far as the tag team division. It’s a shoot when they were on talking about TNA focusing on tag team wrestling & how they are one of the best tag teams in the industry. It’s true. And for those guys to be there, with all of their title wins from ECW, WWE, TNA, & overseas, they are this generation’s Road Warriors. I don’t want to say they are arguably the best tag team of all-time…they practically are. There’s really no argument.”

Former ECW Champion/WWE superstar, Tazz, appears to be heading to TNA pastures within the forthcoming days…almost being a foregone conclusion at this stage. TNA Wrestling has even gone so far as to post a “teaser” video hyping his entrance into the company. Mosh asked Joel what he feels Tazz can bring to the company at this stage of his career. “Tazz is another guy who’s been around for years, and he’s done it all. As a wrestler, a commentator, and he’s naturally charismatic. What TNA gets for having Tazz is more experience, an unbelievable performer, he’s great. I don’t know if they would make him a commentator down the line or what they want to do with him, but you really can’t lose with Tazz.”

As mentioned previously, the “Legends Of The Arena is this Saturday night, and The Mayhem Crew wanted to know how excited is Joel about going back to the former ECW Arena, and if this could spark a return for him? “That would be great. I can’t wait to do the thing this Saturday. It’s going to be a blast. We were all there in the original ECW, those people who are going to be there on Saturday. And to show that there are people still remember it, pine for it, and yearn for it, and will come & see it at the drop of a hat, I am thankful that I have the opportunity to be there on Saturday. And if it leads to me being back in the business on a more regular basis, I’d love that. The wrestling has been a passion of mine since I was very young, and something I put a lot of time into. And in many ways, it was something I was meant to do. You know time will tell. I’ve been away for a while, and if I would get back into the wrestling business on a more regular basis, that would fine by me.”

Much more is contained in this near 45-minute interview with “The Quintessential Studmuffin,” including Joel’s uncensored thoughts/takes on who really came up with the “creative” sayings (involving sexual innuendo) that Joel used to say at the ECW live events, Joey Styles’ successful run in World Wrestling Entertainment, his on-air feud with Don “Cyrus” Callis (and why he feels “Cyrus” could be a vital character in today’s business), plus some exclusive insight on the relationship between ECW & TNN (and the disaster that ensued). Hear this story & many more from one of the men who was in the trenches, the one & only Joel Gertner…only found as part of “The Summer of Mayhem 2009.”
