VELOCITY RECAP

Jamie Noble w/Nidia vs. Spanky

Nidia distracts Spanky with her imitation fur coat so that Noble can attack him from behind. HBK’s pride and joy grabs the momentum back by holding onto the ropes after an Irish whip, throwing Noble to the outside, and hitting a high flying plancha. Back in the ring, Noble catches a flying Spanky with an armbar that drives him to the mat. He continues to work over the arm with various submission holds including one where he is laying on the top turnbuckle with Spanky’s arm and head caught between his legs. Spanky drops Noble on his head from this position, but the rich redneck manages to hang onto the submission hold. Spanky finally gets in some offense with a climb up insuguri out of nowhere followed by dropkick to the knee and a field goal kick to the face. The two cruisers exchange some near falls until Noble hits Paydirt and gets the submission victory.

Winner by submission: Jamie Noble

Flashback to Smackdown
They show the tag team championship match.

Sean O’Haire vs. Funaki
Funaki tries an armbar but O’Haire is too strong for him. He hits a quick dropkick but then gets leveled by a big kick to the face. O’Haire hits a powerslam and a kick to the chest followed by some more kicks to the back and chest. Smackdown’s #1 announcer fights back with an insuguri and a bulldog, then hits a twisting DDT after O’Haire caught him in midair. The big man has had enough as he flattens Funaki with a punch and nails the Widow Maker for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Sean O’Haire

Kanyon vs. Mike Bell
The rookie takes control early with a hip toss and a powerslam. They lock up for a test of strength, but Kanyon kicks Bell in the gut and then executes a very creative move like a chinbreaker except Bell’s chin smacked against Kanyon’s knee (okay, terrible description but it’s hard to explain Kanyon’s moves in words). He hits a second rope bulldog and a baseball slide into Bell who was laying up against the ringpost. Kanyon slaps on a sleeper hold, but Bell breaks it with a back suplex. Kanyon tries a bulldog and Bell throws him across the ring to break that hold. The newcomer hits a nice fallaway slam into a pin attempt (he calls it something Bridge, couldn’t catch the name but it’s somewhere in New York) for a two count. Kanyon hits the Flatliner out of nowhere for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Kanyon

Flashback to Smackdown
We see Zach Gowen and Stephanie McMahon vs. Big Show.

Matt Hardy vs. Shannon Moore
Matt starts off by taunting Shannon and ripping off his Mattitude shirt. Shannon finally fights back after a few minutes and the crowd is behind him. Version 1.0 grabs the momentum with a clothesline in the corner, a choke in the ropes and some shoulder blocks. Shannon hits a spinning heel kick after an Irish whip, but falls prey to the Side Effect. Matt puts Shannon up on his shoulder and nails a spinning airplane neckbreaker and then hits a second rope legdrop for a two count. The original Mattitude follower finally takes control with a drop toe hold that sends Matt head first into the second turnbuckle. A blockbuster gets him a two count as does a springboard high cross body. He goes for a tornado DDT, but Matt throws him off and tries for the Twist of Fate. Shannon counters with a rollup pin that gets him a two count. He dumps his mentor to the outside and hits the Halo from the top rope all the way down to the floor. Back in the ring, Shannon uses a Hurricanrana for another pin attempt, but Matt kicks out and then rolls up his student for the win. After the match, Matt congratulates Shannon and celebrates, but Shannon doesn’t look too happy.

Winner by pinfall: Matt Hardy

VELOCITY REVIEW

Jamie Noble w/Funk Nasty vs. Spanky
Solid opening match. I really like seeing Spanky against high flying cruisers better (like that match with Xavier last week) but he still worked well with Noble’s slower, brawling style. Looks like Noble is getting a slight push here with the new story about inheriting money and getting a victory over Spanky, who hasn’t lost on Velocity in awhile. I still think Nidia is heinous, but she has certainly played her role as a trailer trash chic very well. It could be really funny to see where they go with the new storyline.

New Tag Team Champs
Well, that was a short title reign for Eddie and Tajiri. I like all these guys just fine, but I really haven’t cared about a title change (on either brand) since they split the roster. Are they working towards a Tajiri vs. Eddie feud here? Eddie is the master heel so it’s great to see him changing sides again.

Sean O’Haire vs. Funaki
Not a bad match here. It was almost a squash, but Funaki was allowed to get in some good offense. What’s with O’Haire kicking so much? I like his finisher and the crowd gave him a good reaction for it (if that was real crowd noise), but he needs new ring attire and something to do besides beat up on cruisers on the B show.

Kanyon vs. Mike Bell
Kanyon got a win!! I’ve always been a Kanyon fan since I first saw him in WCW. I love how creative he is in the ring. It almost looks like he is thinking up new moves in the middle of the match. I also remember him using the F5 way before it became known as the F5. Bell was good in this match too as he showed a lot more offense than expected from a newcomer.

Zach gets his contract
Now that payoff was worth the wait. I honestly haven’t been following the storyline every week, but I’ve seen it on the Velocity replays. This match had that same feeling as Mick Foley’s first title win over the Rock and Lita’s title win over Stephanie McMahon (both on Raw). No, I’m not saying this match was as good or as monumental (before you fire off some angry e-mails), I’m saying that with all the outside interference (Foley had DX’s help and Lita had Rock’s help) and the crowd going crazy, it just reminded me of those two matches. But now what do they do with Zach? Will he go from the main event to wrestling regular cruiser matches?

Matt Hardy vs. Shannon Moore
Awesome main event!! Both guys got in tons of offense and there were several near falls. I think it’s interesting that Shannon looked angry after the match, even when Matt congratulated him on a good effort. Will we see these two go at it again? Or will the WWE bring in Evan Karugius, switch Hurricane to Smackdown, and give us all what we want .... the reformation of 3 Count!!!! Okay, maybe not.

Overall, a great show this week. The opening match between Noble and Spanky was good, although a bit slow, and the main event was outstanding. The middle matches were decent because the rookies didn’t just lay down for the veterans. This makes a few good weeks in a row for Velocity. Hopefully this streak will continue as we head towards the first ever Smackdown PPV.
