VELOCITY RECAP

Rey Mysterio vs. Kanyon
Kanyon uses his size advantage early on to throw Rey around until Mysterio counters a gutwrench powerbomb into a hurricanrana. Rey proceeds to slam Kanyon’s head into all three turnbuckles in the corner and rides him Bronco Buster style. Kanyon bails to the outside and catches Rey in mid air after a plancha attempt and throws him back first into the barricade. Back in the ring, Kanyon slows things down with a knee-to-the-back submission hold (very popular these days) and then hits a suplex from a bodyslam position before Rey takes him down with a reverse DDT. Mysterio then baseball slides right into Kanyon’s sack o’ plenty, but the ref doesn’t DQ him. A springboard senton gets him a two count. After receiving two backbreakers, Rey springboards from the apron and drops Kanyon neck first over the second rope. 6-1-9, West Coast Pop and it’s all over.

Winner by pinfall: Rey Mysterio

Flashback to Smackdown
They show Kurt Angle and John Cena’s rap battle from Thursday.

Matt Hardy vs. Tyson Dux
Dux takes control with some quick counters and a sliding baseball kick to the head. He taunts Matt and does one of the worst (and funniest) dances ever seen in a wrestling ring. Version 1.0 ends the rookie’s run with a side effect and continues to pummel him with snake eyes in the corner and a mean flying clothesline. Dux fights back with DDT counter and a high cross body for a two count. Matt plants him on the top turnbuckle and delivers a Twist of Fate from the top rope for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Matt Hardy

Billy Kidman vs. Bobby Rude
Kidman starts off hot with a hurricanrana and a spinning leg scissors that sends the rookie to the outside. Rude takes control with a kick and some punches, then delivers a double arm underhook suplex. Kidman ducks a clothesline and hits a Flying Burrito followed by a big back body drop. Rude catches him with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and a spinebuster for a two count. Mr. Torrie Wilson floats out of a bodyslam attempt and hits an insuguri followed by the Shooting Star Press for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Billy Kidman

Flashback to Smackdown
We see the next episode in the McMahon family soap opera.

Backstage
Matt Hardy is congratulating Shannon Moore on his big victory over Zach Gowen. He promises to give Shannon a very special gift on Smackdown next week.

Charlie Haas vs. Funaki
The two wrestlers show off their grappling skills with lots of counters and near falls. Haas hits a clothesline and a backbreaker then drops Funaki with a powerful Irish whip into the turnbuckles. He executes a fireman’s carry into a front slam and then sinks in an armbar. Funaki moves out of the way of a charging Haas in the corner and hits a neckbreaker to turn the momentum. Smackdown’s #1 hits his reverse DDT counter out of a fireman’s carry and then slide kicks Haas in the face. A bulldog gets Funaki a two count and then Haas reverses a high cross body for a near pinfall. Haas counters a tornado DDT attempt and locks in the Haas of Pain. Match over.

Winner by submission: Charlie Haas

VELOCITY REVIEW

Rey Mysterio vs. Kanyon
Awesome opening match!! There were tons of counters and momentum changes, way more than you would expect from the first match on the B show. Kanyon didn’t get to show his entire arsenal, but at least he had a few chances to look good in this match. I doubt he’ll ever get the chance to go anywhere in the WWE and that’s unfortunate because he’s got innovative skills and the fans give him lots of heat.

Angle vs. Cena
This is worth buying the PPV for all by itself. These guys are two of the best all around performers in the entire WWE.

Matt Hardy vs. Tyson Dux
Solid match here, much better than we normally expect from a squash. Tyson Dux showed some good offense and that dance is just plain awful (but funny). The Twist of Fate off the top rope was a nice finish. But am I the only one to notice that Matt’s tan was splotchy? I guess he didn’t apply the body paint evenly this week.

Billy Kidman vs. Bobby Rude
Decent match between these two, if a bit short. But what’s the deal with Rude’s purple cape?

Vince vs. Stephanie
The worst part of this whole segment was having to hear Sable on the mic. After all these years she still can’t recite a single line and make it believable.

Charlie Haas vs. Funaki
Good main event. Funaki used his awesome reverse DDT counter again, this time from a fireman’s carry. He shows us a new way to use it almost every week. Haas showed off his impressive wrestling skills and he worked well with the much quicker and smaller Funaki.

Overall, this was a great Velocity. None of the matches were bad. Billy Kidman and Matt Hardy faced off against rookies (okay, both have been on Velocity before) who held their own. The main event was solid but the best match of the night was the opening bout between Rey and Kanyon. Let’s hope that Velocity will deliver another solid show next week as they build towards the PPV.
