GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 07/17/2008

NEWS

In what could at best be termed as chaos, Peach State Pandemonium featured Ace Rockwell and the Wayback Machine with Bobby Simmons on July 16. Rockwell was late due to a traffic accident just before the broadcast began, so he was pushed back to the next segment, and we decided to move the advertised Curtis Hughes interview out to another date to be able to accommodate a full two segments to him. We expect a date to be rescheduled in August. Somewhere along the way, adding to the debacle, we also lost the connection to our co-host. Bobby Simmons also joined us for the debut of the Wayback Machine, where he laid out the timeline of the decision of Georgia Championship Wrestling to expand to Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia in 1980. Click here for the archive. Next week’s program will feature A.J. Styles, Marc Anthony, and Mike Porter. Les Thatcher is scheduled to joins us on July 30 with another edition of the Wayback Machine, providing a sequel to Simmons’ introduction of the northern move. We also have Titio Santana slotted to appear on August 6. More guests are expected to be announced in coming days for July 30 and August 6, as well as future episodes. (Rich Tate)

Ultimate Fighting Championship star Quinton Jackson has been taken into custody for the second time this week. It is being reported that on Wednesday afternoon Jackson was with friends, who hailed a nearby officer when they felt he was acting strangely and could possibly be on the verge of harming others or possibly himself. Thought not arrested, Jackson was escorted to a mental health center for observation. As of this writing, he is reportedly still being detained. Jackson, who was arrested on Tuesday, is facing felony charges for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident in Costa Mesa, CA, as well as additional reckless driving and evasion. (Rich Tate)

Tickets for the following TNA events go on sale tomorrow: August 17 in Muskogee, OK, at the Muskogee Civic Center; and September 5 in Westbury, NY, at the Capital One Bank Theater. (Rich Tate)

Biggs. Big Bank Barfield vs. Less Fortunate. "The Italian Heartthrob" Johnny Romano vs. Prince Murphy. Others advertised to appear include "Dangerous" Danny Horne and "Hot Stuff" Tommy Dane. United Wrestling Association "No Return" results from July 15 in Seymour, TN, at the Hardwarium, with an attendance of more than 120: Bodacious Nick beat Kolby Garrison 2 out of three falls. Billy Marshall & Jerry Lee beat Justin Nobody & Aaron Cross in a Fans Bring the Weapons Hardcore Match. Electra defeated Fantasy (w/ Candi Lane), and a rematch has been signed for next week. Travis Sawyer pinned David Young. Jason Dalton & Lil Kennedy (Enigma) fought to a no contest. Mike Ogle beat Jesse Dalton in a street fight. This was a massacre as both men were busted open bad. They brawled all over the building and threw each other through six rows of seats on both sides of the building. UWA Tag Team Champions The Devil's Rejects (Chase Stevens & Adam Armor) beat The Encore (Tyler Sutton & Justin O'Day) to retain the titles. It was announced that Matt Boyce is gone from UWA due to several no shows and has been stripped of the UWA Heavyweight Title. A tournament will be held very soon to crown a champion. Shawn Shultz came out and talked about how Boyce wasn't man enough to show up and how he threw out an open challenge to anyone to come and face him. "Primetime" Allen Shepard defeated Shultz. Fans went crazy as Shepard pulled out this huge victory. The Devil's Rejects hit the ring and destroyed Shepard. The Encore made the save, but they were eventually beaten down as well and hit over the head with a steel chair. Bodacious Nick jumped in the ring, but Shultz, Stevens, and Armor beat him down as well. Bodies were laid out everywhere. Shultz got on the mic and said everyone knows that The Devil's Rejects are the hottest tag team going today. He said everyone out there, especially the people on the Internet, are chickensh*t. He said he wants someone to book the Flea Market guys so he can take them on. The Devil's Rejects and Shultz had created one of the tensest moments in UWA history. Fans were being held back everywhere; a lot of them were crying at remarks Chase had made. They were being nailed with water and trash from the fans. It was definitely a wild ending to No Return which ran until 11:30. (Larry Goodman)

VPW Standoff 7/11/08
Official Results & Notes

VPW would like to thank all of the fans that came down to the Centereach VFW Hall on a hot Summer Friday night.

The night started off on a more serious note with the entire roster surrounding the ring for a 10 bell tribute for the father of Nick Noshus who had passed away only 2 days prior to the event. Noshus chose to wrestle and dedicate the match to his father. The week prior, VPW also lost another longtime fan in the brother of Jack O’Hearts.

In their usual rude and obnoxious style, Eclipse interrupted the ring announcer as he was welcoming everyone to the event. Xandar Page and Jay Delta wanted to fuel their egos and basically tell the crowd how great they were, especially after winning the tag team titles. Eventually Eclipse started to rip on their opponents for later in the night, Livewired. Having heard enough, JMS and VSK hit the ring and chased Eclipse off.

The first match of the night featured longtime rivals, “Firebird” Jorge Santi and Minyon, facing off in their first singles match in VPW. This match could have gone either way, but the aggressive nature of Minyon overcame Jorge Santi. Both men are evenly matched in both their wrestling ability and highflying nature. A rematch between these two is bound to happen.

Next saw a brutal match that that saw Dr. Lamar Braxton Porter defeated by Nightmare in what has to be considered a fluke. Porter absolutely dominated the match from start to finish, but Nightmare managed a quick rollup for the win. An enraged Porter then proceeded to annihilate Nightmare for several minutes. Having seen enough, Nightmare’s longtime friend, The Voice, ran out to help his friend. Porter was accompanied to the ring by the lovely Rayna Fyre. Fyre was making her VPW debut, but already seemed to be in conflict with VPW’s female announcer Dani.

Following that massacre, Nick Noshus defeated Richie Tyler in a hard-fought wrestling match. Before the match, the undefeated Noshus bragged about his VPW record.

The next match featured “Masculine Marvel” Sabotage defeating The Voice. Prior to the match, Sabotage came down to ringside and told everyone how he came to the building expecting to wrestle “Smooth Operator” Mike Gallagher, but Gallagher decided to not show up and face him. Sabotage then proceeded to challenge anybody from the back to wrestle him. The challenge was answered by the mysterious Voice.

After that match was a number one contender’s match for the VPW Championship. This wild match saw four of VPW’s best going at it for a shot at Jason Static’s championship. The participants were Xavier, “Ultra Sexy” Joe So Delicious, Mack Daddy Flexx and the Zombie. The Zombie did not initially come down the ring when announced, but in typical Zombie fashion, he ran out from the crowd several minutes into the match. Xavier appeared to take credit for the Zombie’s delay. After several close falls, Mack Daddy Flexx pinned his longtime rival, Joe So Delicious to become the number one contender. Immediately after the match, VPW Champion Jason Static hit the ring and got in Flexx’s face. Static appeared confident enough that he would defeat Azrieal later in the night and almost seemed to be looking past the match entirely. Getting right in Flexx’s face, Static reminded Flexx that he has defeated Flexx every time they’ve stepped in the ring together. Static told Flexx that he always comes so close to winning, but in the end he always comes up short.

The first match after intermission was an elimination match to determine the number one contenders to the VPW Tag Team Championship. The participants were Pretty Poison, VTG Enterprises, the Suburban SWAT Team and the Funky Fresh Boyz. Pretty Poison was cornered by Tough Tommy, VTG Enterprises naturally had Vinny the Guido watching their back, the Suburban SWT Team was accompanied by Mikey Old School and the Funky Fresh Boyz had Ms. Terri with them. Scotty Rio and Johnny “Muscles” Marinara were the first men eliminated. Next out were the Funky Fresh Boyz, but before they were eliminated they and the Suburban SWAT Team had a dance off in the middle of the ring. Finally, the Suburban SWAT Team eliminated Pretty Poison to earn a shot at longtime rivals, Eclipse. After the match, EJ Risk and Justin Toxic looked to have fired their manager Tough Tommy.

Following the number one contenders match for the tag team titles was the actual tag team championship which featured the champions Eclipse taking on Livewired. Eclipse defeated Livewired in the finals of May’s huge tournament. Unfortunately, Livewired came up short once again and lost their opportunity. JMS and VSK seemed to not be 100% on the same page compared to their usual matches.

The final match of the night was a first time ever encounter between two of VPW’s finest for the VPW Championship with Jason Static taking on “The Good Guy” Azrieal. Before the match, Azrieal called Static out for neglecting him and looking ahead towards Flexx instead of worrying about the match at hand. This match really came down to the wire, but in the end, Jason Static forced Azrieal to submit courtesy of The Long Kiss Goodnight. Mack Daddy Flexx then decided to return the favor from earlier in the night and interrupt Static’s victory. Flexx got right in Static’s face, but was immediately jumped from behind my Joe So Delicious. The two members of Best Bodies, Inc. then proceeded to pummel Flexx until they finally left the ringside area.

Plenty of backstage footage and interviews were filmed for the DVD release.
