Gargano & Iron discuss “Last Man Standing”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxCrxREewKc

Gargano’s assault on Greg Iron (Feb. 2008): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOVcxlIbPuk

Heart. Courage. Determination. These words exemplify Gregory Iron, both in his career and in life. Born with cerebral palsy and raised in a tumultuous and hazardous home, Iron had the odds against him all his life. Verbal and emotional abuse from his parents, constant ridicule in school, and his mother’s growing crack addiction were merely a few of the many pitfalls Greg endured as a part of everyday life. However, adversity served only to make him stronger, more prepared for adverse conditions, and ready to face life’s challenges. When Greg nearly died one year ago at the Plain Dealer Pavilion thanks to a severe concussion, Iron never feared the end of his career or livelihood, but merely another obstacle to overcome. With the help of his strong will and desire, and professional wrestling as his life-long escape from the pain and torment surrounding him, Gregory Iron has grown into a complete and successful competitor, and an even more successful man.

Johnny Gargano. Cocky, self-absorbed, yet wise beyond his years with ring knowledge rivaling that of the most grizzled of veterans. Gargano is Cleveland wrestling’s golden child, with the ring savvy, intelligence, and good looks to grow into the complete package of pro wrestling. Gargano does not know the feeling of courageously fighting through abuse and ridicule, he was always the successful one, the attractive one, the stand-out, and the prodigy. Naturally gifted and genetically blessed, Gargano embodies the silver-spoon mindset. However, beneath Gargano’s cosmetic exterior exists a monster more grotesque than can be imagined. A hideous creature filled with jealousy, insecurity, and hate. When Iron pinned Gargano last October in Iron's first match back from his concussion, proving once and for all the pauper was on the same level as the prince, Gargano’s world was shattered. Gone was the brash young kid with a quick wit and overbearing personality. Gone was the egotistical punk fans just wanted to punch in the mouth. A darker Johnny Gargano was here. The monster had been awoken.

After four months of building resentment and insecurity, Gargano lashed out with the now-infamous attempt to end Greg’s career. Gargano attempted to destroy Iron not just physically, but mentally. By attempting to retire Iron, Gargano was taking the one and only thing Greg depended on his entire life… and forcing it from him. Iron was bloody and beaten, yet, despite all of our thoughts to the contrary, he was not beaten. Three more months of rehabilitation and recovery. Three months with one singular goal in mind, one singular obstacle to overcome. In May of this year, despite doctor’s orders, Iron began his journey to that goal, with the signing of a waiver and the issuing of a challenge.

Sunday night, August 3, Gargano and Iron compete one-on-one for the first time in ten months in one of wrestling most dangerous environments: Last Man Standing, where the only way to win is to beat your opponent so badly, he is unable to answer a ten count.

For Gargano it is a chance to absolve a blemish and re-write history, to finally defeat Iron swiftly and soundly and solidify his status as “above” someone he looks down on as so inferior. It is also his chance to finish what he started earlier this year, to re-awaken the monster within and assault Iron to the point his will never be able to recover and never be able to return. Gargano could rid the wrestling world of arguably his biggest threat.

For Iron it is a chance to cement his status as a top-tier player. It is his chance to return to the very venue he nearly died in a year prior, the Plain Dealer Pavilion, to take that location from the site of his lowest of lows, to his highest of highs. His chance to show that despite Gargano’s malicious intent, Iron will literally and figuratively not stay down. It is his chance to show his prior win over Gargano was not a fluke, and through hard work and dedication anything truly is possible. Most of all, it is one last hurdle for Gregory Iron. Is Greg prepared for the biggest obstacle of his life? Is Greg prepared to face the one man who embodies everything Iron has fought his entire life to defeat?

Only one can be the Last Man Standing.
