SOUTHEASTERN WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 10/02/2008

NEWS and NOTES

Prime Time Pro Wrestling promoter Billy Roper sits in with Rich Tate tonight for a PSP Fix, live at 9:30 PM ET. If you miss it, the archive will be available afterward.

World Wrestling Entertainment starts a new era tonight as the move to MyNetwork TV will begin tonight at 8:00 PM ET. The one-hour program is a recap of WrestleMania XXIV. The first SmackDown on the new network airs tomorrow night.

Dave Meltzer is reporting that Sting has agreed to stay with Total Nonstop Action through 2009, although it is believed to be only a verbal agreement at this time. It is believed nothing has come of the direct negotiations between Dixie Carter and Gail Kim. As previously noted here, Kurt Angle seems intent on leaving TNA when his deal expires next year. He has said he wants to venture away from wrestling and into the MMA arena. Kevin Nash has not re-signed, and his current deal expires next week. Apparently the sticking point is still regarding merchandise. He has talked to WWE, and it appears WWE has interest.

The lineup for TNA’s iMPACT broadcast tonight is as follows: Angelina Love versus ODB; the Latin American Xchange versus the Motor City Machine Guns; Sheik Abdul Bashir defends the TNA X Division Title against Jimmy Rave and Eric Young; Christian Cage, Jay Lethal & A.J. Styles versus Booker T & Team 3D; and Rhaka Khan & ODB versus the Beautiful People. Also included are Jeff Jarrett and Jim Cornette addressing Kurt Angle’s negative comments from last week, though it is played down a bit. Mick Foley also thanks Vince McMahon.

GWH wishes a happy birthday to Waldo Von Erich (1933) and El Dandy (1962).

Today in Memoriam: John Ayres (42, 1995) and Sean Evans (36, 2007).

Click here for this week’s update of Wrestler’s Eye View with Les Thatcher.

The Hollywood Reporter published a story that Norman Lear is behind a project that may produce a series about wrestling, set in the 1970s, for HBO. The series is tentatively titled “Everybody Hurts”.

We have received reports that Terry Lawler, an active wrestler on the local independent scene in and around Georgia, was involved in a hit-and-run accident while riding his motorcycle earlier this week. Apparently his injuries were minor, with some burns and stitches, but he had what has been described as a big gash” on his leg. GWH sends our best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to the ring.

Great Championship Wrestling returns to the GR8 SK8 Plex in Phenix City, AL, tonight. As a special gift to the loyal GCW fans, all tickets will be $5, first come first serve for ringside seats. The advertised card includes: Champion vs. Champion: GCW Heavyweight Champion Micah Taylor (with Tracy Taylor) vs. GCW Interstate Champion Sonny Siaki. Johnny Swinger vs. Cru Jones. NOSTALGIA

OCTOBER 2, 1933 (MONDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – FAIR STREET ARENA (Jason Thompson – Promoter) > US Light Heavyweight Title Match: George Romanoff versus Harry Nixon / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found. It is unclear as to the origin of the US Light Heavyweight Title, and who was the defending champion in the match between George Romanoff and Harry Nixon.

Following the match between Jack Ross and Jim Hesslyn, the Southern Lightweight Title was held up pending a rematch on October 9, 1933.

OCTOBER 2, 1934 (TUESDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Henry Weber – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Pat Reilly defeated Gene Bowman > Billy Edwards and George Hill wrestled to a draw at 60:00 > Buck Weaver defeated Chief Chewacki (2-1)

OCTOBER 2, 1934 (TUESDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – RIVERSIDE ARENA (Frank Bettis – Promoter) > Frank Remille versus Jim Zbyszko > Alex Headlin versus Chippewa Charlie > Son Almand defeated the Terrible Turk by disqualification / Notes: Aside from the match between Son Almand and the Terrible Turk, no documented results for the remaining matches on this card have been found.

OCTOBER 2, 1939 (MONDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – RED ROCK ARENA (Nat Jones and Cleve Roby – Promoters) > Battle Royal featuring Bill Collins, Red Dugan, Honey Boy Hackney, John Mauldin, Tony Papalino, Young Gotch, Frank Remille, and Young Londos > Young Londos versus Honey Boy Hackney / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found. OCTOBER 2, 1959 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Negro Men’s Southern Heavyweight Title Match: Willie Love* versus Tiger Conway > Women’s World Title Match: Pat Lyda defeated the Fabulous Moolah* by disqualification > Southern Heavyweight Title Match: Ray Gunkel defeated Freddie Blassie* to win title / Notes: Willie Love and Tiger Conway were scheduled to wrestle each other, but no results were reported after the card. The origin of the Negro Men’s Southern Heavyweight Title is unclear to us at this time. It appears as though Willie Love was simply billed upon arrival, and perhaps he and Conway were touring promotions around the south with this title. The Fabulous Moolah had been billed as Women’s World Champion since she defeated Judy Grable on September 18, 1956, in Baltimore, MD. However, she was not considered the undisputed champion until June Byers retired with her title, won in Atlanta on August 20, 1954, in a win over Mildred Burke, until Byers retired in 1964. Freddie Blassie had been the reigning Southern Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Dickie Gunkel on August 7, 1959, in Atlanta. During the match between Ray Gunkel and Freddie Blassie, Gorgeous George came to ringside and threw “Georgie” pins at Gunkel, but he ducked and they flew into Blassie’s eyes instead, allowing Gunkel to get the pin on a distracted Blassie. Blassie left the ring and attacked George, but Gunkel helped chase Blassie away. George then issued a challenge to Blassie for a match, and the fans instantly cheered him.

OCTOBER 2, 1961 (MONDAY) – AUGUSTA, GA – WILLIAM BELL AUDITORIUM (Steve Manderson – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Young Paul Jones versus the Angel > Matt Jewell versus the Black Panther > Jack Bence versus Prince Omar > Russian Death Match: Ivan Zukoff versus the Country Plowboy / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found. Young Paul Jones was billed as a distant cousin to Paul Jones.

OCTOBER 2, 1962 (TUESDAY) – MACON, GA – MACON CITY AUDITORIUM (Fred Ward – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Johnny Walker defeated Mr. X (1) by disqualification > Choo-Choo Lynn defeated Pedro Godoy at 4:00 > Mr. Moto & Gypsy Joe defeated Chief Little Eagle & Chief Crazy Horse

OCTOBER 2, 1963 (WEDNESDAY) – COLUMBUS, GA – COLUMBUS MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Fred Ward – Promoter / Fred Ward Promotions) > Chris Averoff defeated George Wolfe > Women’s Match: Peggy Allen defeated Margie Ramsey > Jack Bence and Bob Morrow wrestled to a draw at 45:00 > Southeastern Heavyweight Title Match: Marco Polo* defeated the Inferno by disqualification (2-1) / Notes: Bob Morrow was advertised as having been a wrestling champion in the U.S.M.C. During the third fall of the match between Marco Polo and the Inferno, the latter used a cane from his manager to attack Polo while the referee was distracted, and was initially awarded the match and the title. However, after some discussion, the referee reversed the decision when he learned of the tactics. Frankie Rogers managed the Inferno. Polo had been the reigning Southeastern Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Joe McCarthy on September 25, 1963, in Columbus.

OCTOBER 2, 1964 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Steve Kovacs defeated Mickey Blassie > Enrique Torres defeated Charlie Carr > Dick Dunn & Sputnik Monroe defeated the Scufflin’ Hillbillies > The Mysterious Medics defeated Frankie Cain & Pepe Gomez > NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Hiro Matsuda* defeated Don Fargo by disqualification / Notes: Hiro Matsuda had been the reigning NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Danny Hodge on July 11, 1964, in Tampa, FL. Bette Bouncer and Dot Carter had been scheduled, but there was no mention in the reports following the card. It was announced that the Fabulous Moolah would be wrestling on the card on October 9, 1964, and that Horst Murphy would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.

OCTOBER 2, 1965 (SATURDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – WAII STUDIOS (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Nick Kozak defeated Jack Vansky > Freddie Blassie defeated Vince Gironda / Notes: This was for the “Live Atlanta Wrestling” television program hosted by Ed Capral.

OCTOBER 2, 1965 (SATURDAY) – MARIETTA, GA – FRANKLIN DRIVE ARENA (Elmo Chappell – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Mixed Tag Team Match: Benny Matta & Judy Grable versus Vince Gironda & Penny Brooks > Nick Kozak versus Dutch Savage / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found.

OCTOBER 2, 1970 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM [P] (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Robert Fuller defeated Cisco Grimaldo > Mr. Ito & the Great Ota defeated Bob Armstrong & Tim Geohagen > Bill Dromo defeated Karl Von Stroheim > Ray Gunkel, Bobby Shane & El Mongol defeated Paul DeMarco & the Assassins > Georgia Heavyweight Title Match: Buddy Colt* defeated Freddie Blassie at 18:00 / Notes: Robert Fuller substituted for El Medico in the match with Cisco Grimaldo. Homer O’Dell managed Buddy Colt & Karl Von Stroheim. Colt had been the reigning Georgia Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Nick Bockwinkel on September 4, 1970, in Atlanta. The program for this card shows that “Atlanta TV Wrestling” has moved to a new time slot on Channel 11 each Saturday from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. It was reported that Bobo Brazil would be wrestling in Atlanta on October 9, 1970. Bobby Shane participated in an autograph session for fans.

OCTOBER 2, 1971 (SATURDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – WQXI STUDIOS (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Klondike Bill defeated Buddy Colt by disqualification > George Scott & Dick Steinborn and Rocket & Flash Monroe wrestled to a draw > Roberto Soto defeated Joe Turco / Notes: This was taped for the “Georgia Championship Wrestling” television program hosted by Ed Capral. It was announced that since Dick Steinborn was not as injured as it first appeared on October 1, 1971, following a match with partner George Scott against the Assassins, the rematch for the held up Georgia Tag Team Title would take place on October 8, 1971.

OCTOBER 2, 1973 (TUESDAY) – MACON, GA – MACON COLISEUM (Fred Ward – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Jim Wilson defeated the Medic > Ricky Gibson and Stan Vachon wrestled to a draw > Tom Jones defeated Jim Dalton > Jerry Oates, Leon Ogle & Roberto Soto defeated Bobby Duncum, Billy Spears & Winston > Bill Watts defeated Bob Orton, Sr. > Macon Tag Team Title Match: Bob Armstrong & Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated the Super Infernos* by disqualification > NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Danny Hodge* defeated Bob Orton, Jr. / Notes: J.C.
