PGWA PRESENTS ‘A BANNER NIGHT’

An Evening of Women’s Wrestling in Tribute to a Legend

Penny Banner was more than just another lady wrestler. During her 23 year career (1957-1977), which coincided with the so-called ‘Golden Age of Women’s Wrestling’, she set standards and achieved successes that made her a major figure in her day and an icon for the generations that followed.

Some fans know her as the first woman to hold the American Wrestling Association’s Ladies Championship, others for her years of packing arenas across the United States and Canada; some even recall her having dated Elvis Presley in the 1950s (Elvis was a big wrestling fan, and whenever Penny would work in Memphis, he and his friends were always at ringside to cheer her on!). Outside of the ring, Penny was also an accomplished competitive horsewoman and businesswoman, and in her latter years she was a multi-medalist in the Senior Olympics.

Penny Banner was also the Commissioner of the PGWA, a position which she held since the organization’s founding in 1992. Although no longer a wrestler herself, Penny took seriously her duty as a role model for newcomers to the sport. She was also disturbed by the growing trend in women’s wrestling at the time to focus on what became known as “T&A” rather than actual athletic ability. In her estimation, the ‘Evening Gown Catfights’ and such gimmicks were killing the sport she loved. In her position as commissioner, she dedicated herself to the PGWA’s mission of preserving and promoting the ‘Old School’ style of pro wrestling. The means of doing so were to host all-ladies shows, to book individual women’s matches on various independent promotions’ cards, and to publicize the ladies in both print and, with the development of the internet, online.

And the PGWA’s success speaks for itself. At the time of its founding, women’s pro wrestling was seemingly on the verge of extinction in the U.S., with few organizations even bothering to book female wrestlers on their shows any longer. But in 2008, women wrestlers are more popular than ever, and a number of other all-female promotions have joined the PGWA in presenting women’s shows. And the PGWA’s official website, LadySports Online, has been visited nearly three million times since its relaunch in 2003.

Through it all, Penny Banner served as not only a symbol of the PGWA’s growth, but also a cornerstone of its success.

Sadly, after a valiant battle for several years, Penny succumbed to cancer early in 2008.

Now, in honor of both the woman and the legend, the PGWA is presenting “A Banner Night”, bringing together some of the most talented women in the sport of professional wrestling today, with each match on the card dedicated to Penny’s memory.

Headlining the card will be a PGWA Title Match, featuring the champion, Nikki Roxx (aka TNA Knockout ‘Roxxi Laveaux’), against former WWE Diva, Tracy Taylor of Hawaii. Also slated to appear will be Mia Martinez, Scarlett Rose, XTC, Sassy Stephanie, Angel Dust, Sarah Lynn, Josianne Pussycat and Jamie D (both from Canada), and Tennessee’s own Tasha Simone, Susan Morton and Su Yung.

Additionally, joining us will be Wendi Weaver, the daughter of both Penny Banner and another pro wrestling legend, Johnny Weaver. Wendi will present a Penny Banner Spirit of Excellence Award to one of the participants at the show.

The ultimate result will prove to be, we hope, a fitting way to honor our friend and idol.

This very special show will be held on Saturday, November 15 at the SAW Arena,

1214 B Louisville Hwy in Millersville, Tennessee (just north of Nashville). Bell time is 7:30 PM, and tickets are $10 at the door.

JBL, Tom Prichard & Honky Tonk Man Endorse IWF Pro Wrestling School:
10th Annual Open House December 6-7 at West Paterson Training Facility

(WEST PATERSON, NJ)- Aspiring wrestlers ready to rumble their way to fame and be the next superstar can make their championship dreams come true. On Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7, 12-3 pm, Independent Wrestling Federation hosts its 10th Annual Open House Weekend at IWF Centre, 32 Willow Way, West Paterson, NJ.

Established in 1999, IWF Pro Wrestling School trains hundreds of prospects from 16 states and six countries that compete in bouts across the world. During the open house, potential students get an up-close look at wrestler training classes. IWF Heavyweight Champion Kevin Knight, head trainer and 13-year veteran, leads classes four days a week covering basic holds and high-flying moves.

To supplement the year-round training program, IWF hosts clinics with major superstars and legends. Former WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield, WWE Florida Championship Wrestling Developmental head coach Dr. Tom Prichard, Hall of Famer Tito Santana, and The Legendary Honky Tonk Man appeared this year as guest instructors.

"Kevin Knight does a great job of training future stars of sports-entertainment," said JBL, whose Layfield Energy Products are available at IWF Centre. "To make it in professional wrestling today is tough because there are no more minor leagues...this is why what Kevin does is the future of the sport. Kevin has the best facility and methods for training I have seen...I wish I had this when I started."

20 IWF graduates performed on WWE Raw and SmackDown TV and Pay-Per-Views. IWF Centre features a wrestling ring, weight-room, video classroom, and hosts monthly exhibitions where trainees showcase their skills for family and friends.

"IWF impresses me in many ways," said Tom Prichard, IWF Clinic coach since 2002. "Kevin Knight and everyone involved are constantly looking for ways to improve and help their students be the best. I enjoy doing clinics at IWF because I know the students are hungry and looking to better themselves. Kevin has taught these students the respect for the business and this is why I would recommend his people for extras and training partners for WWE Superstars."

IWF American Champion Damian Adams is scheduled for WWE Raw on December 1 in Washington, DC. Knight, Biggie Biggs, Tony Torres and Chris Steeler are scheduled for WWE SmackDown on December 30 at Izod Center, East Rutherford, NJ.

"As IWF School enters its 10th year, they continue to provide top-notch training necessary to become a successful professional wrestler," said Honky Tonk Man, IWF Clinic coach since 2002. "Desire comes from the heart and Kevin Knight is passionate about making sure these students are aware of the dedication you must possess…both mentally and physically…to work hard every day to improve in the ring as a performer."

IWF Commissioner Rich Ross heads the management team at USA Network and NBC Universal, partnering with WWE supervising Raw and ECW programming. Former WWE Diva Dawn Marie trained at IWF and had her first-ever match with IWF in 2001. Former IWF Tag Team Champion Marc Verow works for UFC Event Production Staff.

“Wrestlers excel in the program and receive WWE tryout opportunities as a result of our first-rate training regimen coupled with our friendly and safe environment," Knight said. "Our top graduates literally circle the globe, traveling to Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan."

IWF graduates also appear in the entertainment industry as Justin Corino, Tony Torres, Travis Blake and Matt Bennett starred on Nickelodeon television shows Danny Phantom Ultimate Enemy, and WACK Wrestling. Kev Kage headlined as Rangers hockey mascot Bobby Granger on MSG Network, while Knight starred in the Burger King Buckin' Chicken commercial.

The open house December 6-7 is free, as visitors can tour the facility and meet wrestlers and staff. School open to students ages 15 and up. Layfield Energy Products, including Mamajuana, 418 and Drank will be on-sale during the open house. For information visit www.WrestlingIWF.com.

Independent Wrestling Federation produces family-friendly live events and hosts children’s Birthday Parties. IWF Pro Wrestling School is recognized as the premiere training facility in the Northeast by countless television and news media outlets.

IWF Pro Wrestling School Youth Winter Clinic December 27-28-29:
8th Annual Program for Kids Ages 12-17 in West Paterson, NJ

(WEST PATERSON, NJ)- On December 27-28-29, Independent Wrestling Federation hosts the eighth annual Pro Wrestling Youth Winter Clinic at IWF Centre, 32 Willow Way, West Paterson, NJ. Daily session time is 10 am to 3 pm, with the three-day class open to boys and girls ages 12-17.

Kids learn basic mat moves and ring techniques in a friendly and safe environment under the direction of IWF Heavyweight Champion Kevin Knight, a 13-year veteran and head trainer.

"This amazing program provides kids a taste of what its like to be a wrestler and gain an insight into the dynamic world of sports-entertainment," said Knight. "It's a chance to get active during the holiday break from school, leap off the top rope and have some fun!"

IWF stars also appear as guest instructors. All participants receive an IWF shirt and free event tickets. On the final day of the session, kids perform in a live exhibition for their families and friends.

"Our kids have a blast as they emulate their favorite wrestling stars under total supervision in our padded ring…its great exercise and an incredible experience they won't forget," Knight added.

This past summer, 30 youngsters from five states, including as far away as Ohio and Maryland, hit the mat during the popular clinic. For information or to receive an application, visit www.WrestlingIWF.com.
