Break It Down (Column #40) - Raw's Worst Week and more

Okay, hiatus over. WWE finally did it, they pissed me off to a point where nothing could stop me from yelling at them. I hate for my first column back to be so negative but it must be said, and by God, I came back to say it.

Now we start off with the vacancy of the World Title. Now if you paid attention, you'd realize they never even took Triple H's name plate off the belt. Apparently they were so ready to give it back to him as soon as possible they couldn't get an intern with a screwdriver to come around and take the minute it would require to take the damn thing off.

Now, we look at Triple H's primary feud, Randy Orton. I feel so bad for Randy because when he first turned after the World Title win he was so over, but once Triple H cut his legs out from under him he's been going downhill. Crouds got quieter... and quieter... and now he doesn't come off like a top face at all. Talking about it with WV's Minister Monday Night and chat room leader, Brian Farmer, I realized it was because of the way he carries himself. You look at Orton and his poses, mannerisms, words, all scream "look at me and worship!". He brings attention only to himself and doesn't play the croud at all. If anyone besides Triple H was his main enemy, he would be a heel. That's when you're not working as a face, when the only thing keeping you face is the fact you're only battling heels. In this dismal age of wrestling there is a sorry lack of croud interaction, but what there is the fans eat up. Rock has the People, Jericho has Jerichoholics, Cena has the Chain Gang. These guys are over huge and they only recognise the importance of their fans. Orton is only out there for Orton, even in character he couldn't care less about the 12 year old girl in the front row with all his merchandice on who came a thousand miles to a major event just to see him. No, straight to the ring, right passed her with his arms out in the "look at me, I am a God amongst mortals" pose.

So Triple H's main feud can't get over himself enough to realize how bad his character's getting, it's almost to the point where he needs to replace Batista in Evolution just so the guy that's more over right now can get a shot. Which is the next part, how long are they going to tease a face turn for Batista? I am tired of this "oh, I was just acting" crap, it's been going on for months. They drag this on any longer and the whole point becomes mute, nobody will care when he finally does turn face. And this is the backup feud for after Orton eventually gets squashed by Triple H. Great job, WWE, great job. Do you even know why this is continuing so long? So Trips can have two feuds at once. Double the camera and mic time, isn't that handy?

And where was it all made apparent? New Years Revolution. Possibly the most horrendous PPV done the whole WWE year, if not this whole century thus far. It wasn't because the Knee Fairy was on her time of the month and taking people down left and right, no. Just one bad, half-assed match after the other for three hours, all ending in (BIG SURPRISE) Triple H regaining his title, and now his damn title reigns are in the double digits, damn it all. RVD, Lita, and Eugene, all down with knee injury after the PPV, and the one who deserves a massive injury gets another pointless World Title.

Well, we all had Raw to look forward to, right? Raw the following night might wash some of the bad taste out of our mouths, they might salvage something... Oh wait, it's even worse than the pay-per-view! Triple H on constantly or always getting talked about, another hint toward the Batista face turn, doesn't it all, I dont know... seem exactly like last week's Raw? The opening bit I will give credit for, it was well done. The ending might work out in the end, as well. Still, for two days in a row, WWE cheated it's fans, at least I felt that way. We will finally get Orton vs Triple H at the Royal Rumble, where he'll lose and Trips will go on to face Batista at Wrestlemania 21. Months of building up to Orton and Triple H at the big show only for it to get blown by WWE's bad writing and Orton's ego, it's getting replaced by a face turn that was brought about kind of on accident and it comes off like any other PPV title feud instead of something big.

So what should have been done? Well Triple H would have had to win the Elimination Chamber over Batista. Next night we get the face turn and the match at the Rumble would be Triple H and Ric Flair vs Batista and Randy Orton, somewhere in the middle of the card. Orton and Batista lose, then later in the night during the Rumble, it comes down to the two of them. After a good five minutes or so of struggling, Batista would win it. However, the next night on Raw, he gives the shot to Orton as kind of an honor thing, knowing Randy wants Triple H more than he does. They'd go on to WrestleMania 21, Orton would win the belt back, and afterwards Batista starts in with Triple H to keep him from getting a rematch right away. That way Trips is broken away from the title picture for a while and a few of the should-be top carders on Raw will have a chance to heel turn. Kane and Benoit especially need the turn treatment.

Alas, not going to happen, Triple H is too much in control of Raw. After all, it is the Triple H show, right? The whole program is written to him.

Just to display Triple H's control on Raw, I thought it might be fun to time how long he was on camera last night, including matches, promos, and on-screen ads for upcoming matches, just to see how much he really was dominating the show. But for contrast, I hand picked a few more to time. Jericho and Benoit, who had a much hyped match and because they were in Canada, Kane who had the main event slot for the night, and the hottest wrestler on Raw, Batista. So, how did everyone do?

12:57 - Triple H
20:22 - Jericho
11:54 - Benoit
09:23 - Batista
10:14 - Kane

You'll note Jericho way in the lead thanks to the Highlight Reel segment, which was more for Muhammed than for him. The others are fairly even, as well. But wait. We're talking about control on Raw here, time for getting character and story over with the audience, namely, mic time. That's hard to have when you have a match that night... oh, that's the difference, right? Everyone on that list had a match last night, all except Triple H. Let's see what happens when we take the matches out of these times.

12:57 - Triple H
07:52 - Jericho
01:35 - Benoit
03:37 - Batista
02:26 - Kane

And Jericho's now 5 minutes back even with a rare Highlight Reel thrown in. And everyone else isn't even close, even with their match advertisements thrown in. Kind of a stark contrast, isn't it? Keep in mind three of those four extras are former World Champs, two of them headlining Wrestlemania, and that's as much chance as they get on the mic with Triple H around. Kinda drives the point home, doesn't it?

Oh well. My job is done for this week. Come back next week where the topic will be more serious, and amazingly, won't complain about Triple H at all. Scary, huh? Until then.
