Pro's from the Palace (#2) - Picking Opponents for the champs at WM 21
On Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 4:32 AM EST I'm kind of excited to have this opportunity to write for Wrestleview, so I wanted to drop another bomb on the site this week. We are rapidly approaching the granddaddy of them all, Wrestlemania 21, and there are two, no count them, four titles that are not even close to being set for storyline matches for that card. That scares this madman, to the point that I am going to try and help Vinnie Mac figure out which way to go with these titles at this time. Let's do the Raw titles, and then go to the Blue & White stuff.
The Intercontinental Championship
Who here did not love, and I mean, love Shelton Benjamin cold cocking Snitsky back to the stone age this week with a steel chair? Now, it's pretty obvious that Benjamin and Snitsky have at least one more go round for the I C strap, but it's highly doubtful you'll see that at WM 21. That will probably finish up with a gimmick match of some sorts in the next coule of weeks on Raw. Which brings the obvious question:
Who is Shelton Benjamin going to face for the Intercontinental championship at Wrestlemania 21?
It would pretty sad if the IC title was not defended at this Wrestlemania. I know Randy Orton last year had a well defined storyline with Mick Foley, so there was little reason to expect the IC strap to get put up last year. This year, there doesn't; seem to be a potential storyline. Unless they use Snitsky, which I think is a slap in the face of the title, and of Shelton Benjamin's abilities. Snitsky does deserve a slot in the card, but not shooting for a championship, not at the Super Bowl of Sports Entertainment.
So, let's think up some possible opponents for Shelton Benjamin.
A) Edge
B) Ric Flair
C) Charlie Haas
D) Christian
E) Chris Jericho
Ok. quickly, to rationalize my possible choices here, Edge, Christian and Jericho are all former Intercontinental title holders, I think, to my knowledge, they have all, with maybe Christian as an exception, gone toe to toe with the champion at some time before, and they all are legitimate title contenders, without having anything to prove to anybody. The other two are interesting possibilities, don't you think?
Ric Flair needs one more run as a singles champion before calling it a career. Do NOT believe that I think if Ric Flair challenges for the IC title at Mania that he would win it, because if this match were to happen, Shelton would retain on sheer athleticism alone. But, the mat skills of Shelton Benjamin vs. the experience and ring saavy of the Nature Boy would and could make for a classic Mania confrontation with stakes being as high as they are.
Lastly, Charlie Haas. Unfortunately for poor Charlie, the split from Shelton has not been too beneficial for him. He has languished in self exile since Rico's departure, basically not being seen or heard from. Yes, he has dealt with injury, yes, he has gotten engaged, but no, Charlie Haas has not made an impact. An interpromotional win at Wrestlemania 21 in a non-title, or even a title affair against his former tag team partner and runnin' buddy would prove most worthy in the hopeful relaunch of the Seton Hall University star from Edmond, Oklahoma, Charlie Haas. It's a longshot, but hey, it's a thought.
The World Tag Team Championship
Down the road I am going to spend some time discussing how p*ss poor the tag team division is on Raw and Smackdown. I thought, just perhaps, that maybe things were looking up with the tag match I saw last week with HBK & RKO teaming up against the classic confrontation of the masters of the Con-Chair-To, E & C. But, egos are egos, and the chances of seeing E & C get back together for a tag team run are pretty slim indeed, as Edge continues to think he's a world title contender, and not pretender, and Christian, well, he's just Christian, what can I tell you? I'd love to see HBK & RKO continue as a cohesive unit, but they're too involved in their own singles careers to even think about a tag run.
So where does that leave us for opponents for Regal & Tajiri? La Resistance? Please, not again. Don't put us through the torture of La Resistance getting anymore title shots, please. They've been on top of the mountain once too often, if you ask me. What about the only other seemingly bonafide team available on Raw, the Hurricane & Rosey? Would it be absolutely a scream to see Hurricane & Rosey compete at Wrestlemania 21 for the tag team championship?
I have sat here for at least close to 30 minutes and I can't figure out anyone else who would be qualified to fight for the tag titles at wrestlemania. It should be very interesting how they go about to fix this problem with the storylines, and I hope they use a little more creativity than just the usual patch work solution of giving a shot to Conway and Grenier.
The Women's title
Who cares? Trish vs. Molly vs. Victoria right? Something to that effect. Please don't make Christy or the other new divas wrestle. They're so not ready. This title needs to be put on the shelf for some time until the WWE gets more women in the fold that can wrestle. Perhaps, there is one thing that could be a possibility. Bring Ivory out of mothballs, and see if she can wring the gold out of Stratus' claws. Unique, but doubtful.
Now to Smackdown:
The Cruiserweight Championship
It's obvious to me that WWE is in love with these six pack challenges for the boys, and frankly, I think so are the fans. I remember the cruiserweight open back from last year's Mania, and it was a very enjoyable contest, I would like to see something to the effect of that type of match going down this year but maybe add a stipulation to allow ANY cruiserweight from either show a a shot to get in...to give Hurricane a shot, Tajiri if they don't defend the tag belts, and maybe even a returning Matt Hardy, if he's cleared. Expect, if he's signed, Kazarian to get involved in this side of the coin, as he would be a valuable asset to a depleted cruiserweight division.
The WWE Tag Team Championship
One of my feedbacks, (I will get credit when I find it, I am writing this from work), thinks that Rey & Eddie are going to implode and have a singles match at Mania. I am not so sure, as I think they could be a dominant tag team, and one with enough recognition to get by as long term champions, for now. Smackdown desperately needs an infusion of tag team experience, and there is one team languishing in ECW style exile out there that is probably dying for a shot at the gold one more time. Buh Buh Ray & D'Von, the Dudley Boyz. Out of Spike's shadow, Bubba and D'Von come back in a flash, and take out the champs, either for the belts or in a run-in, re-invogirating their respective characters, and bringing some very needed prestige back to a sagging tag team division on Smackdown.
The United States Championship
Unless they do title for title, it's obvious John Cena is going to still be US champion once the smoke clears from Hollywood. The question on the table is, will he have one belt, or two. I'll go out on a limb, right here, right now,
John Cena will capture the WWE Championship from JBL at Wrestlemania 21.
Now, a double champion does have a unique quality to it that WWE could definitely use for some time, and I would hope that at some time they allow him to drop the US title graciously, and not strip it from him like Kurt Angle did back in the days of his run as GM of Smackdown. Anyway, what about a Smackdown style battleroyale at Wrestlemania 21 to determine the two men who would compete for the US title, either against each other for the vacant championship if Cena wins the WWE title, or against Cena in a triple threat match on Smackdown down the line if Cena is unsuccessful in his bid against JBL.
Now I doubt heavily that the WWE would sit here and listen to a raving madman like me about these ideas, but the question is, will you? Drop me a line at PALACE@WRESTLEVIEW.COM and let's talk about these possibilities, or just plain tell me that I'm nuts, nuts, nuts.....
Till next time, KIMOSABE, SUMO!?!?!?!
