Bobby "The Brain" Heenan interview recap to kick off WM weekend.
Just before Bobby "The Brain" Heenan got ready to head to L.A. for this year's WWE Hall Of Fame ceremonies, the gang from the Monday Night Mayhem show were able to get a great in-depth interview with Heenan that went on for almost an hour! Bobby talks about the business from the 60's to today and all of the highlights along the way. The interview and the entire show are archived in streaming audio on AudioWrestling.com every week, and this Sunday there will be special WM preview editions from all of your favorite AudioWrestling.com shows beginning at 12 noon est. with guest analysts including Scott Hudson, Wrestling Professor, RD Reynolds, and Scott Bowden. Plus a live post game show where a former WWE WM main eventer is scheduled to join us, in addition to a live call in from The Staples Center in LA, the site of WM 21 immediately following the event!
Here are highlights from the interview provided by the show's co-host Shawn Walters of MondayNightMayhem.com and AudioWrestling.com
Legendary WWE manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan was a guest on the 3/31/05 edition of Monday Night Mayhem!
The Big Mosh and Angry Hero welcome Bobby to the show, congratulating him on forty years in the wrestling business. Bobby compares the industry of today to that of yesteryear, talking about when he broke in back in the 60’s and currently with Ring of Honor. He relays a funny story about a bum that recognized him on the street and ensuing conversation.
Mosh asks Bobby about life on the road. He talks about how simple it was early on in his career to travel but how tedious it was once he got rolling with the WWF. AH mentions excerpts from Heenan’s most recent book, Chair Shots and Other Obstacles: Winning Life’s Wrestling Matches, including eating pot roast cooked by a car engine.
The conversation shifts to the lost art of managing, where Bobby mentions that he and Jim Cornette are looking to start a manager workshop in a couple months.
Mosh asks about Bobby’s feeling on being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and being a part of WrestleMania XX. Bobby remembers how much the event reminded him of commentating at MSG with Gorilla Monsoon. He enjoyed doing Prime Time Wrestling with Gorilla since it got them “out of the house and not do the dishes”.
AH asks Bobby what he’s going to say when he inducts Paul Orndorff in the WWE Hall of Fame this year. Bobby’s going to do it completely off the cuff just like he did when he was on WWE TV. Heenan remembers a funny anecdote about improvisation on Prime Time Wrestling and not knowing his cue.
AH brings up former WWF nerd Jamison, who Bobby calls a “heck of a guy” whose character was a “retarded Jerry Lewis”.
Mosh inquiries who Bobby’s personal favorite was in the Heenan Family. Bobby had no problem with Andre or anybody else for that manner, but Rick Rude didn’t like him since he thought Bobby stole his heat. Bobby called the group a “family” because calling it a “stable” would imply where “horses take a crap”.
Bobby gives his thoughts on WrestleMania I and the Body Slam Match between Big John Studd and Andre. Bobby recalls originally in the Body Slam match that Andre wasn’t supposed to toss out the money to the fans but decided to any way and Bobby wasn’t about to stop him.
Mosh asks Bobby about the spectacle of WrestleMania III. Bobby wasn’t able to soak in the aura since he was busy managing and commentating throughout the event but it really hit him once he came out for Andre vs. Hogan.
The crew talks about the Chair Shots book, Bobby’s foray into self-help and advice on life. AH looks to Bobby on how to “pick up chicks”, to which Heenan jests “give them cash”, but ultimately recommends being honest with them. AH brings up the “female Dusty Rhodes” stalker mentioned in Bobby’s second book and the odd things she used to send him.
Bobby discusses his health and he’s loving life right now in Florida. He has trouble saying some words due to his surgery but he’s alive and thats all that matters.
Mosh gets Bobby’s thoughts on Sean Mooney (“super guy”) and Tony Schiavone (“not my kind of guy”).
Bobby remembers the Hogan nWo heel turn, which the WCW brass wouldn’t tell anyone who was the infamous “third man” but it was obvious since Hogan’s car was in the parking lot all day.
Bobby feels that WCW failed because it wasn’t run by someone who had the passion of Vince McMahon or Verne Gagne. Bobby puts nothing past Vince McMahon and it was no surprise he was able to buy out his competition.
Bobby gets candid about the Ultimate Warrior, saying how he was a cool guy initially but later on pegged Bobby as a “con man.” Mosh asks about the Pillman incident, which Bobby thought was a fan that grabbed him but there was no heat between him and Pillman afterwards.
The interview wraps up with Bobby’s take on Curt Hennig and his death, his pick for a Heenan Family member that never was and if him and Mean Gene are going to get into shenanigans with Mae Young and Moolah at WrestleMania 21.
The interview was about an hour and if you hear the show there was probably about a dozen other topics discussed by Bobby during this classic interview!
