Danny Doring Interview: Talks about ECW career, reunion shows, more
On Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 2:57 PM EST Brian Kelley of AudioWrestling.com sent in the following recap...
Danny Doring talks about old school ECW... reunion shows... and much more!
Former ECW superstar (as well as one of the final co-holders of the ECW Tag Team Titles), "Dastardly" Danny Doring was a guest on the this week's edition of Monday Night Mayhem! The whole show can be heard right now in streaming audio on the AudioWrestling.com website! If you missed any of the interviews this week including the explosive Kid Kash interview that caused his release from TNA, or the new interviews with AJ Styles and the artist formerly known as Billy Gunn, they are all playing exclusively on AudioWrestling.com
Here are highlights from the Danny Doring interview provided by MNM's co-host Shawn Walters:
The crew introduces Danny Doring to the show, his THIRD time on the Mayhem. Danny is currently driving up the Jersey shore, looking to enjoy the warm spring weather. He also is dieting right now, although he cheated with some Mexican food the other night.
Mosh asks Danny if he will be appearing at any of the ECW reunion shows slated to happen in June, either one of the two or both. Danny's is not officially confirmed for either show but can't see why not he and Roadkill would NOT be included, being the reigning ECW tag champs, reaching "Hulk Hogan-esque" levels in the length of their reign thus far (almost FIVE years). Danny tells AH he got to keep his belt since Paul Heyman owes him money.
Danny is looking at these ECW reunion events as a chance for some of the boys to cap off their careers, while it may serve as a jump-start for others. He hopes the shows could re-ignite the teaming of him and Roadkill on a regular basis.
In regards to the differences between the tentative WWE-sponsored ECW PPV, "One Night Stand" and "Hardcore Homecoming", being put together by Shane Douglas, Danny sees Shane's event as more retro 1995 or 1996 style of ECW, where the WWE has an advantage in holding the event in New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom, a staple on the old ECW circuit.
Danny address the prospect of the recently released Rhyno and Chilly Willy making an appearance at either/or reunion show, saying a lot can happen in two months and whatever the decision is, its good for business.
Mosh gets Danny's thoughts on former valet Lita's situation with Edge and Matt Hardy and if he's talked to her. Danny hasn't spoken to her; he is there for her as friend but feels it is not his place to get involved. Regardless, he looks forward to working with Lita (aka Miss Congeniality) at the WWE ECW show if he is officially invited.
AH asks about the changes in Danny's wrestling style since the later ECW days, especially with his time on the indie scene. Danny says the indies allow him to work on a lot of things, like slowing down his pace and learning patience in wrestling newer competitors. He says there no comparison whatsoever between the training he received at the ECW House of Hardcore and the recent Tough Enough/Diva Search ventures in the WWE. Danny gets into how miserable Tazz and Bubba Ray Dudley were during his training and they would compete to see who could be the most miserable.
Commenting on the RAW Diva Search, Doring says that as long as the girls involved respect the business, you really can't fault them for being in the position they are in. Unfortunately, he adds, some of the girls could care less about the wrestling industry and as far as he's concerned, they could "jump in front of a train."
When asked about his opinion of the Dudley Boyz, Danny thinks they are a tremendous team and thinks it is to their advantage that they've been off of WWE TV for so long, to keep the fans from getting bored with them.
AH wonders if the Eliminators may make a surprise appearance at one of the ECW shows. Danny thinks that would be great for the hardcore cult ECW followers and he hasn't seen either Perry Saturn or John Kronus in a long time. When asked randomly about Sal E. Graziano, Danny lives in the same town as Sal and he could catch a ride with him to the show(s).
Danny feels in regards to the WWE's ECW show, it would make sense to build some sort of angles to establish the importance of guys like Nova (currently Simon Dean) and Stevie Richards to the newer ECW fans seeing the product for the first time. He thinks it's not proper to put a guy like Simon Dean out there at the PPV as "Nova" then expect the fans to buy him the next night as "Simon Dean".
On the topic of the possible reunions of both the Impact Players (Lance Storm & Justin Credible) and Simon & Swinger, Danny sees it as being logical to put Simon & Swinger as a team since that's where they had their most success in ECW. As for Credible and Storm, they were both over on their own so the Impact Players getting back together would just be for the hardcore fans.
Danny puts over Terry Funk as being a nice guy and comments on how those who are in positions in business to be "a--holes" aren't where those that are not in those same positions are "a--holes".
Danny is anticipating catching up with his old ECW compatriots like Tazz, Tommy Dreamer (one of his best friends), the Dudleys, Chris Chetti, Nunzio (Little Guido) and Tracey Smothers to name a few. He wonders if he'll run into some of the more obscure ECW characters like the Musketeer or Donn E. Allen. On the other end, he is not looking to meet up with the Blue Meanie any time soon and won't even acknowledge his presence. Regardless, it's not about who he doesn't want to see, but meeting up with old friends and having a good time.
Mosh gets Danny's thoughts about ECW being able to function constantly with different guys on top as opposed to the WWE's current fixation with guys like HHH. Danny states that there will always be a guy to be the "next HHH" but HHH has made a lot of guys into stars and carries a huge load in making the "next Rock, Austin or Hogan" down the line.
Danny thinks that while doing an ECW PPV without Paul Heyman's input is simply not possible, having him book the entire show is not necessary. Danny puts over Tommy Dreamer as the man to make this show a success and a lot of guys already like working with Tommy. Despite all that, the boys in ECW "would have killed for" Heyman and Dreamer and the WWE ECW show will be no different.
Danny says it is essential for the last hurrah of ECW to happen in a traditional ECW venue and town, i.e.: Philadelphia, New York City, Buffalo, etc. He didn't want to the ECW legacy to go out like it did in Arkansas. Somehow the conversation leads into Danny revealing he is a Dallas Cowboys fan and the requisite Drew Bledsoe response from Mosh.
Mosh recalls Danny's impersonations of Rick James (from an earlier episode of MNM) and Tazz. Danny says he doesn't do a great Rick James but sings a good rendition of "Super Freak". AH mentions that Danny should sing the National Anthem at the ECW One Night Stand. Danny goes on to do a bit of his Tazz voice for the MNM crew.
AH gets Danny's thoughts on WWE WrestleMania 21, who says it "wasn't the best WM but it was pretty good." This leads to the crew remembering watching the WWE Great American Bash PPV with Doring and Roadkill this past summer. Danny says not every PPV match is going to be great, evidenced by the match with him and Roadkill versus Hot Commodity at ECW Guilty as Charged 2001. It upsets Danny that the match is on DVD since he feels that it doesn't properly display the talents possessed by he and Roadkill as a team.
The interview wraps up with Danny talking about his recent matches on the indie scene, particularly a "grueling (not really)" bout with Chris Candido (funny stuff here). He's taking a weekend off to go see Overkill in concert and comes back to face Jim Neidhart two nights in a row in New Jersey. He honestly doesn't know where he's going to be appearing a few days before it happens.
