Tito Ortiz on Jimmy Kimmel: Talks about movie career & less about TNA
On Thursday, May 5, 2005 at 1:27 PM EST Recap of Tito Ortiz on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' Wednesday, May 4
Report by: Adam Martin of WrestleView.com
- After an interview with actress Bonnie Hunt (Cheaper by the Dozen/TV show "Life with Bonnie"), Tito Ortiz was up next. Jimmy Kimmel introduced him as the star of the new movie "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" (which also stars Edward Furlong of Terminator 2 fame, Tara Reid and Dennis Hopper after a search on imdb.com) and the 'Ultimate Fighter'.
- When Ortiz comes out, he gives Kimmel a few of his custom skull caps that say "PUNISHMENT" on them. Ortiz plugs they are part of "Punishment Athletics" which is his new clothing company. Kimmel jokes that he always wanted a cap that said punishment on it. He also gives Ortiz a giant burrito that was talked about earlier in the show (to make a long story short, a kid was on the show earlier who brought a giant burrito to his school and because of the size of it school officials considered it a threat, shutting down the school for a brief period).
- Kimmel says Ortiz seems like a really nice guy, but then he becomes a vicious person when he fights. Ortiz said it is like a light switch and especially in "acting" you have to know how to turn it on and off at any given time. Kimmel points out that beating the crap out of someone shouldn't be considered a "light switch" so to speak. Ortiz said it is strictly competition and points out that his new goal is to bring MMA to California. He says he wants to sort of be the ambassador for Mixed Martial Arts in California.
- Kimmel then asks what Mixed Martial Arts is. Ortiz says it's a mixture of kickboxing, wrestling, ju jit su and judo. He mentions that it is one of the most exciting sports to watch right now and one of the fastest growing. Kimmel points out that he has seen some and that it is really violent. He says that people who learn karate are taught to only use it for self defense, while MMA fighters tear each other apart for only $800. Ortiz said it isn't like that anymore and that when he first started 10 years ago he experienced a bit of that, but it has all changed since then.
- Ortiz then talks about his background in wrestling in both high school and college, pointing out how natural it was for him to get into this field of fighting. Ortiz said he became the world champion in a year and a half, held onto the belt for almost four years, lost it two years ago and is now in a rebuilding period of his career. He brings up his victory over Vitor Belfort on February 5 earlier this year at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Kimmel brings up that he broke his nose in that fight. Ortiz said it was all about perseverance in how he got through that night.
- Kimmel brings up that he will be in the new Crow movie titled "The Crow: Wicked Prayer", taking on acting. Ortiz said he can't be a fighter for the rest of his life and wants to use his persona in different fields.
- Kimmel asks what he does if he is out in public and someone either taunts him or wants to fight him based on what they have seen on TV. Ortiz said the number one thing all MMA fighters know and follow is that you kill them with kindness. He said it means more to be the bigger man and walk away. Ortiz says every once in a while guys try to test him at bars and clubs, but at the end of the night they want to buy him a beer after he follows the "kill them with kindness" routine. Kimmel said that is probably wise on their part and Ortiz says if they still bug him he tells them to go to Blockbuster and pick up a copy of one of his fights.
- Approaching the "lets wrap it up point", Kimmel plugs that he will be at a "pro wrestling event" coming up. Ortiz said he is a huge wrestling fan and brings up a story that when he tried out for wrestling in high school he asked where the ring was at since that is all he knew. He mentions that he got a call from "them" to be a special guest referee and he thought why not since he has always been a huge pro wrestling fan. Kimmel plugs that Ortiz will be appearing at TNA Hard Justice and asks him not to kill anyone.
- The appearance only lasted for about five minutes. If TNA was hoping to get some mainstream publicity from this show, they didn't get it. No date was given for the Hard Justice PPV and nothing was discussed concerning Jeff Jarrett or AJ Styles.
