To add on the story we had up earlier today on WrestleView regarding Jim Cornette's "forced vacation", we now know more about the incident with Kevin Fertig (formerly Mordecai on the SmackDown brand). At the OVW TV tapings last week on Wednesday, Fertig teamed with Daniel Puder against Kenzo Suzuki & El Diablo (Ken Doane) in a dark match that was made to give Suzuki and Puder ring time to work in front of a live crowd and improve their in-ring work.
During the match, Fertig came to the ring wearing a baseball cap and reportedly goofed around inside the ring, putting the hat back on after taking bumps and other antics that was no doubt done to get a laugh from some of the wrestlers in the back. At that point Jim Cornette, who is very old school and a true loyalist when it comes to the art of pro wrestling, sent word to the ring for Fertig to stop what he was doing. After that, Fertig took a sombrero hat from a fan at ringside and started wearing it, doing even more spots in the ring in what appeared to be in blatant disregard of Cornette's instructions to the ring. When Fertig reached the back, Cornette chewed him out big time and cut one of his trademark colorful promos about making a mockery of the situation when he was told to go out there and help others learn and improve.
This turned out to be one of Cornette's latest outbursts that caused WWE to take notice and send him home for the time being to cool off. It should be noted that Fertig is not very popular backstage among many workers in OVW and is seen as someone who has great potential, but a reputation for taking shortcuts and trying to get "over with the boys" way too much instead of working hard. There was said to be some concern among many last week that Cornette could have easily been dropped from his position as John Laurinaitis is said to be in the thought process of replacing some of the "old guards" with a new crop of officials that he is currently in charge of, especially in regards to Cornette. When word of this reached others, Jim Ross quickly stepped in and calmed the situation to see to it that Cornette was sent home for four to six weeks instead of something drastic.
Some feel this new move was almost a blessing in disguise as according to some Cornette was very burnt out and needed a break to recharge his batteries so to speak. In the mean time, Tommy Dreamer will oversee the OVW TV tapings along with Lance Storm, Al Snow and Danny Davis.
