Update on TNA's current talks with WGN, and background on that station
On Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 1:38 AM EST We have gotten numerous e-mails of people passing us along to a statement issued on a few websites and message boards describing TNA's TV deal with WGN as a lock already at this point with a timeslot already confirmed. Although the reports could turn out to be true, nothing has been confirmed at this point in regards to how negotiations are going between TNA and WGN at this time.
We do know the company is expected to land a two-hour timeslot on Monday night, with 7-9pm and 8-10pm timeslots being thrown out as possibilities. TNA's goal at this point is to announce a debut for the show on June 20, the night after the Slammiversary PPV on June 19, which will still take place as scheduled despite having no TV to support it with the Fox Sports Net deal expiring this weekend. According to reports, the show would be live every other week with a taped show taking place on the following Tuesday.
For those unfamiliar with WGN, here is some background. Based out of Chicago, IL, it became a pioneer "superstation" along with TBS in the '80s. WGN is currently available in 57 million cable homes and is available on both DirecTV and Dish Network systems. In comparison, Spike TV (WWE's current home) is available in 85 million homes, USA (WWE's new home this fall) in 86 million homes and TBS (hosted WCW programming) in 87 million homes. Regarding TNA's talks with Spike TV, it doesn't appear anything has furthered in that department. With TNA wanting a TV deal right now and WWE programming not leaving until the fall, it isn't likely a deal would take place at this time (and that is even saying Spike is even interested anymore).
