P.F.T.Palace (#28) - Hardcore Homecoming & ECW One Night Stand Picks
On Friday, June 10, 2005 at 3:55 PM EST It's only fitting that I try and take the forum I have been granted and keep making attempted predictions for major wrestling events that are upcoming. And since we got one coming down the pike in Philly tonight, let's get down to brass tax. Hardcore Homecoming begins the ECW reunion weekend at the Bingo Hall of Fame. Literally. Let's run this one down. Remember, before anyone gets angry with me, I am making these picks with LITTLE knowledge of the talent's previous encounters in ECW. I didn't watch ECW that much, and I don't have the knowledge to back up the picks I am going to make. I want that to be said right off the bat, so nobody accuses me of trying to be an authority on something I'm not. Ok? Good. Let's get to work.
MIKEY WHIPWRECK & CHRIS CHETTI vs. CW ANDERSON & SIMON DIAMOND
I saw Diamond at the UXW show in February I went to. I know of Anderson from reading the sheets, and I have seen Mikey on Foley's DVD, as well as elsewhere. Mikey is the ECW's version of the cinderella story, even more so than the runt of the Dudley litter. I am not familiar with Chris Chetti, so I can't really comment on him in any form. Mikey can take a bump with the best of them, and I would suspect he is going to take more than his fair share. Diamond has a mean streak of massive proportions and, in this surrounding, mean streaks are tools most likely to assist you in surviving these matches. I'll take CW & Diamond on this one, just from the sheer fact that Diamond has been the one man I saw in person.
WINNERS: CW Anderson & Simon Diamond
I do predict however, that Mikey Whipwreck will either A) take a seriously insane bump, or B) dish one out.
THE BLUE MEANIE vs. TRACY SMOTHERS (w/TOMMY RICH & JT SMITH)
The Blue Guy has a warm up match leading to the bWo reunion on Sunday against Smothers, and it seems like he's going to need some serious backup for this one if Smothers does come out with the guns he is scheduled to. It surprises me that Nova & Stevie aren't scheduled to work this show, but, anything is liable to happen, so let's not rule it completely out. However, on paper, I gotta go with the obvious odds, three on one seems too much, even for the guy with the Blue hair.
WINNER: Tracy Smothers
JERRY LYNN vs. JUSTIN CREDIBLE
A legitimate show stopper match. Credible and Lynn can go for hours on end, and keep the fans entertained for the entire length of the contest. The only thing that would've made this match a pure classic would have been if RVD was healthy, and they made it a three way dance. Anyway, Lynn is a vicious man, absolutely vicious, and Credible has been known to wield a weapon or two. I think, however, when this one simmers to a boil, Jerry Lynn will figure out a way to make Justin Credible seem not so incredible. Lynn's talent and mean streak I think is too much for the former X Factor stable member.
WINNER: Jerry Lynn
KID KASH vs. 2 COLD SCORPIO
Where in the Good Name of the Bleepity bleep bleep did they dig up 2 Cold? Sheesh. I haven't seen him since the days of Flash Funk. Damn. Of course, I could be wrong when I say this, but just from an activity perspective, (from what I know), the notorious K.I.D. will take this one. I am very curious to see how Kash responds in this surrounding and then later in the weekend at One Night Stand. He has been known to be a might off the wall, and with the possibilities in front of him, the consequences could be, um, unique, to say the least.
WINNER: Kid Kash
RAVEN vs. THE SANDMAN
Sandman is coming off the mental high of two successful ECW 'invasions' of WWE programming, leading in to the classic rivalry that has gone from continent to continent. Raven continues to be the classic enigma, even making Jeff Hardy seem stable in his actions. Blood will flow, tears will shed, weapons will be broken over people's heads in this one, when the smoke clears, nobody will truly win. I suspect, however, that the Sandman will figure out a way to take out Raven, because Sandman has more work to do this weekend up in N.Y.C. And, quite honestly, I am a huge Sandman fan, and would pick him against virtually anybody, he intimidated me that much when I met him back in Feburary.
WINNER: The Sandman
SABU (w/Bill Alfonso) vs. SHANE DOUGLAS (w/Francine) vs. TERRY FUNK
First and foremost, how is Terry Funk still breathing? I mean, let's be honest, the man is 900 years old, and he is still taking chair shots like he's a damn rookie in the business. Sabu, I am thrilled to see him back in the ring, and I hope to witness his actions first hand when I see One Night Stand on Sunday. Douglas is a talent and a half, a stud among studs, and this match is liable to blow the roof off the ECW Arena 10 fold. I would suspect multiple outside interference before this one is all said and done. I would suspect many drops of blood to be shed. Honestly, I haven't a clue who to pick in this one. I could give you reasons for all three men. I think, when the dust settles, though, that the man from India will figure out a way to be the last man standing in this contest, the homicidal, genocidal, and suicidal, Sabu will somehow figure out a way to take the victory in this absolute instant classic, something I will be looking forward to watching from start to finish when the DVD is released.
WINNER: Sabu
Since I would doubt that many other matches will be announced for One Night Stand prior to Sunday, I will take the time and use this piece to also go through the card for One Night Stand as well, and drop some predicts your way.
Here we go.
TAJIRI (w/Sinister Minister) vs. SUPER CRAZY vs. LITTLE GUIDO
A cruiserweight triple threat match with two men who can certainly bring it, and one lucha libre who is coming in to WWE through this pay per view, if memory serves. I am not familiar with the Sinister Minister, but I don't suspect he would play much of a role in this contest. I think personally that Tajiri is the most lethal of the three competitors in this particular dance, and will mist his way to a victory. It should be very interesting to watch, to say the least.
WINNER: Tajiri
REY MYSTERIO vs. PSYCHOSIS
If, and this is a big if, Eddie doesn't get involved, this should be a high flying match of epic proportions. I have seen both of these men compete in WCW, and they did not disappoint back then. I hope Rey is healthy enough to put on a good show, as this match would definitely be one for the books, entertainment wise. The one wildcard is what could Eddie do, if he decides to show up during this contest. Based on that, I have to give the prediction to Psychosis, only because it is a pretty significant wild card to try and overcome.
WINNER: Psychosis
MIKE AWESOME vs. MASATO TANAKA
Never thought I'd see the day where Mike Awesome would be wrestling under the auspices of WWE again. But, it's going to happen in a match with a former ECW title holder, (I forget which), in Tanaka. Awesome is a tremendous specimen, and skilled in many ways to torture an opponent, and when I am not familiar with one of the talents in a particular contest, as the case here is for me with Tanaka, I am forced to take the avenue I am most knowledgable with. Hence, the dupe, in my opinion, goes to Awesome, with a ton of sick bumps to boot.
WINNER: Mike Awesome
LANCE STORM (w/Dawn Marie) vs. CHRIS JERICHO
Storm returns to action for one last go round with Jericho on this card. Storm and Jericho, in their primes, could go for hours on end, both skilled in every aspect of the business. Storm, however, has been inactive for some time, dealing with other facets of the business, specifically, teaching, and I think that's going to come back to bite him. Even with the voluptuous Dawn Marie in his corner, and I am really curious to see how she is, since she hasn't been on TV in some time, I think Jericho's activity will be too much for Storm to overcome. This will be a good matchup, but the rust I think will be Storm's downfall.
WINNER: Chris Jericho
EDDIE GUERRERO vs CHRIS BENOIT
The casual fan may say "Yawn" when seeing this match on the card. But, even with the non-storyline factor with this being an "ECW" pay per view, a promo went down thursday on Smackdown when Eddie and Chris met up following Benoit's re-draft to Smackdown, and that provided a nice little punch leading up to this contest. Any die hard who sees Benoit and Guerrero on a card would give up their right blank blank for the opportunity to see these two champions compete mano y mano. I am certainly one of them. A monumental encounter between two sure fire hall of famers with weapons galore all around the contest. A classic, to the last.
WINNER: Eddie Guerrero
Why? Because I think Eddie's heel turn will be too much for Benoit to overcome at this particular obstacle. But, it should provide for some very intense bantering come Smackdown when the title picture becomes less hazy.
THE SANDMAN & TOMMY DREAMER vs. BUBBA RAY & D'VON DUDLEY
Um. Er. How can I describe this? Dream match? Violence personnified? Dangerous to the core? Extreme to the 10th degree? You name it, it's liable to be that, and more. The returning Dudley Boyz have a swagger to them they haven't had since the last 'invasion' with the WCW/ECW alliance. Dreamer is absolutely treasuring every opportunity to fly under the auspice of Extreme Championship Wrestling. And Sandman? Sandman is just out there looking for someone's head to use as a golf ball, with his kendo stick being the driver.
I can't wait for this match. It should be absolutely off the charts intense. I expect so much from this match that the possibility of a major letdown is high, but I can't see it, because each of these competitors have carried the banner of ECW from the word go, and I don't think they're going to drop the ball in the 'main event' status that this tag match I think would put them in. I'm gonna go with the established team for the victory prediction, but let's call it as we see it, the true winners of this contest will be the fans of this product.
WINNERS: The Dudley Boyz
I miss the Hardcore championship. As dangerous as these matches can be, if the public loves them, and the talent enjoys competing in them, they should remain a facet, maybe not a fixture, but a facet of professional wrestling competition. One way or another, I am so looking forward to sunday night, and the opportunity to let loose with about six months of rage and aggrivation through these superstars. I saw a good portion of them live at the indy show I went to, and they were tremendous in that small setting. I can only imagine the possibilities when competing under the auspices of Vince McMahon, and the major leagues of pro wrestling.

Anyone on the Long Island area who has the chance to go see Chris Jericho in Massapequa, I'd love to hear a review of the signing. It's going to be the first one I have missed in almost two years. For more information on that signing, click here to check that out.
Ok. I'm out. KIMOSABE, sumo?!?!?!?
