So be there live, and wear your pink in support of the fight against breast cancer...

As noetd above, Peter Staniforth, writer for PWBTS (as well as his own PSwrestling.net website) and fiancee Christina Coles, are participating in the UK's "Weekend to Breakthrough Breast Cancer".

    Here's her story:

"On 23-25 September 2005 I'll be participating in a very special event called The Weekend to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. I'll walk 60 kilometres (35 miles) over the course of one weekend with thousands of other women and men. All proceeds will support breast cancer research and education at Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The minimum sum I have to raise is £1,500 [EDITOR'S NOTE about $2,820 American] before I can participate in the walk itself. So I need your help.

Would you please consider making a donation to this good cause? Use the link at the bottom of this email, and visit my site - and please take the time to support me. Also I have donation forms on my web page please feel free to print some off and pass around to your friends. If you have difficulty in paying via my web page, please let me know and I will sort out a paypal arrangement. Please keep in mind how far I'm walking - and how hard I'll have to train.

According to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, one in nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That's why I'm walking so far. To do something bold about breast cancer. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.

The website link is found here.

Thank you in advance for your generosity!"

All proceeds from Chrissie, as well as others of The Weekend to Breakthrough Breast Cancer will help fund the critical work of "Breakthrough Breast Cancer", the leading UK charity involved in fighting breast cancer through research and education. The charity established the UK’s first dedicated breast cancer research center, which seeks to end breast cancer by research, prevention, and new treatments.

I'd like to see PWBTS.com readers, as well as those reading my column on the many other sites want to support this effort by the fiancée of one of my writers, as I have a family member and a friend who had breast cancer scares over the last year.

So the concern about breast cancer is personal to me, as well as my desire to help out the fiancée of one of my writers.

For those who don't think it's personal to you, the Imaginis website lists the following statistics:

  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most common cancer among women, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers.

  • According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.2 million people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year worldwide.

  • The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2004, approximately 215,990 women in the United States will be diagnosed invasive breast cancer (Stages I-IV). Another 59,390 women will be diagnosed with early forms of breast cancer.

So indeed, the odds are that the issue IS personal to you, whether or not you realize it.

Donations can be made to Christina's efforts to participate in the UK's Weekend to Breakthrough Breast Cancer in the following categories: Honorary Walker (£1,000), Hero (£750), Inspiration (£500), Hope (£250), Supporter (£150), Friend (any amount...which I assume most readers will use)

Please note, when donating, that the amount will have to be recorded in Great Britain Pounds (for example £15.00, noting that one GB pound equals approximately $1.87). To help you understand how much you're donating more easily, go to this website that converts various currencies to their equivalent currency in your country.

Those readers in the UK can also use Gift Aid and increase the worth of their donations. For every pound donated, Breakthrough Breast Cancer gets an extra 28 pence from the Inland Revenue.

Nearly every reader of this column has (or had) a sister...or a mother...or a girlfriend...or a wife...or a female friend. A lot more of you have someone who has been touched by this than you think. Please give this some thought, and donate if you can.

Further, if there are wrestling promotions, workers, or promoters who would like to assist in this process by donating items that Christina can use to raise funds, please e-mail to me at bobmagee1@hotmail.com or to Peter at PeterStaniforth@aol.com.

UPDATE- JUNE 18: £155 was raised through the auction at the event of a classic ECW t-shirt donated by Bob Magee. An additional £50 was raised through a collection.

To close, here are letters from the June 29 column regarding Joey Marella:

"I just finished reading your most recent column talking about the passing of WWF referee Joey Marella. I just wanted to say that I think it is very heartfelt and well-written piece. I started watching wrestling right around the time that Joey Marella was a WWF referee and, while this may sound odd because most wrestling fans only talk about having favorite/least favorite wrestlers, Marella was certainly one of my favorite referees. I knew (when I was still a mark in my early age) that the ref was the guy who was supposed to maintain control, and make sure that the match ended cleanly.

Now that I'm 24 and have an intermediate understanding of what really goes on behind the scenes at a pro wrestling show, I never realized that a referee had so much more responsibility during a match. Not only do they have to keep the rhythm going, but they also have to somewhat multitask. While they are "reffing" the match, they also have to be listening for cues in their earpiece, such as, or so I suppose, when it's time for the ref to take a bump if it's booked to happen, and when it's time to take it home.

I didn't mean for this to turn out as long as it did, but if you read the whole thing, I totally appreciate you taking the time to do so. But I will end by saying, once again, that I enjoyed this column, and being a fan of Joey Marella, I can honestly say that during my continued tenure as a member of the Internet Wrestling Community, I can't think of a single time anything bad was ever said about the guy. Anyway, thanks for reading, and only if you want, I would like to hear back from you.

    Sincerely,
    S.J.

    From the UK's Dan Morrison:

"I just read your article on NO DQ and would just like to say how good I think it is so many people within the industry pass away. The fact you showed that not just the big names need to be remembered is great. Some fans probably don't know most of those great guys. I have at least heard of most of them, and all need to be remembered, as it is never one person who makes a wrestling card. It is every single person on that card, and if they have made at least one person who wanted to see a wrestling match smile they are all heroes.

    Kudos for the piece again.

    Dan"

From "W. Khan" out of the Netherlands:

    "Dear Bob,

    Good column you wrote.

To Joey Marella and all those others you mentioned who are no longer among us: R.I.P.

    W.K."

Amen to that...and an amen to them all.

    Until next time....
