Ring of Honor Preview: 7/16/05 from Woodbridge, CT (Punk vs. Gibson)

Ring of Honor Returns to Woodbridge, CT tonight with the following card:

CM Punk vs. James Gibson - ROH World Title Match. We all know what Punk did at Death Before Dishonor III, and how he signed his "WWE Contract" on the ROH Title last weekend. Last Saturday, Gibson unofficially pinned Punk with a Tiger Bomb, while Foley made the three count, even though it wasn't in a match. That is what is setting up this match, and Gibson, who has been on a major losing streak in ROH, has promised to defeat Punk, or quit ROH. We'll see what happens.

Christopher Daniels vs. Matt Hardy. If you're reading this, you're probably aware of the Matt Hardy situation, or gimmick or whatever you want to call it. He made a shocking return to WWE this past Monday, and proceeded to say "I'll see you in Ring of Honor" over the WWE mic. Daniels made his long-awaited in-ring return last week, defeated Colt Cabana. I would dare say this match won't be without some kind of run-in or post-match showdown, given all the WWE ties in ROH between Hardy and CM Punk right now.

Samoa Joe vs. Jimmy Rave - ROH Pure Title Match. Rave earned a Pure Title shot by winning a Four Corner Survival last weekend in New York City. He takes on Joe, who defended the belt successfully last weekend against Austin Aries. Rave will surely have Prince Nana with him at ringside, who has help Rave pick up victories in the past. Before Rave worries about winning this match though, he has to make sure Joe doesn't rearrange his face.

Carnage Crew vs. Ring Crew Express vs. Lacey's Angels vs. The Embassy - Ultimate Endurance. Fall one will be a Tag Team Scramble, fall two will be Anything Goes, and fall three will be for the ROH Tag Team Titles. The Carnage Crew enter the match the champs, after winning the belts from Jimmy Jacobs & BJ Whitmer last weekend in New York City. The Ring Crew Express put The Carnage Crew out of ROH for 90 days when they won the Scramble Cage match at Third Anniversary Celebration, part 1. When the CC returned, they put several beatings on the RCE. Lacey's Angels are former Special K members, and will probably be represented by Izzy and Deranged, but that's not guaranteed. The Embassy team will consist of Fast Eddie and Mike Kruel.

AJ Styles vs. Roderick Strong. AJ made his second 'return' of 2005 at Death Before Dishonor III, where he faced Petey Williams. He also defeated Jimmy Rave last weekend on Long Island. Strong has been a regular in ROH since Generation Next, which was just after TNA pulled some of their guys from ROH. So, no real history in ROH for this one, but given the combatants, it should be worth-while anyway.

Austin Aries vs El Generico. Another match with no build-up, but that's ok, since ROH was built on athletic competition over soap opera storylines. Aries is the former ROH World Champion, the man who knocked off Samoa Joe after his 21 month reign. Aries lost the belt to current champ CM Punk at Death Before Dishonor III. The Generic Luchadore, El Generico, debuted at The Trios Tournament, where he and teammates Dunn & Marcos were ousted in round 1. He hasn't been a regular since then, making sporadic appearances, but is back this weekend to take on Aries.

Nigel McGuiness vs Claudio Castagnoli. I've never seen Claudio, but I know lots of people on the ROH message board are big on Double C. He debuts in ROH this weekend, taking on Nigel McGuinness, who has been on a roll of late, including wins last weekend over Vordell Walker and Colt Cabana, with whom Nigel has been feuding for some time.

Four Corner Survival featuring Homicide, Dixie, Kevin Steen, and Azrieal. Three young up-and-comers in this one, along with ROH icon Homicide. Homicide was the 2003 MVP of ROH, with his string of great matches that year. He turned heel and took lead of The Rotweillers faction in spring of 2004. He recently lost a Best of 5 series with Bryan Danielson 3-2. Dixie and Azrieal are former Special K members, who are never allowed to tag team together after losing to Lacey's Angels at Manhattan Mayhem. Steen is much like Generico, making his debut at Trios Tourney, but not making regular appearances since then.
