Additional Report from SmackDown Tapings in Baltimore, MD...
On Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at 2:47 PM EST Tommy Loukas sent in the following report:
Just wanted to give a Live Report from last nights tapings which were great.
Dark Match:
Nunzio & Big Vito d. TNT- This match was decent, nothing special.
Velocity Tapings (7/23):
MNM d. Danny Doring and Roadkill- Decent Match, MNM hot the snapshot on Danny Doring for the win.
Frankie Kazarian d. Scotty 2 Hotty- This was a really good velocity match. There was good wrestling, and psychology with Kazarian really working on Scotty's arm and shoulder. Scotty did a good job selling up until he hulked up at the end.
The Blue World Order d. Nick Berk, Jason Static & Scott Folwer (aka jobbers)- Before the match, Richards said that this is just a sample of what they would do to the Mexicools at the Great American Bash. This match was really boring. Up until the end which saw Nova come in and hulk up, GOLD. The Meanie hit a moonsault for the win.
Christian d. Funaki- This match was also pretty good. I marked out for Christian, and beat the hell out of my chest. I'm kind of disappointed Christian was on Velocity. Anyway Christian had a huge pop, for a midcard heel.
Smackdown Tapings (7/21):
- Show opened with an announcemement that JBL would be giving his victory speech for Sunday's GAB. I laughed at this, JBL is great. The whole night, me, these 3 guys in front of me, and some guys with a JBL is God sign were battling everybody that could hear us with dueling chants. It was fun.
- Rey Mysterio d. Super Crazy via DQ- This match really didn't do it for me. There were some cool spots but there was really no fluidity to the match. Mexicools came out on there Juan Deere's, which was funny. Eddie came out for commentary halfway through. (I could make a joke about Eddie, Rey, and the Mexicools all being in the ring at the same time, but I choose not to.) The match ended when Rey was about to go for the 619 and Eddie jumped in an broke a rake on his back.
- The first of several great JBL video packages came on. It compared JBL to another Great American George Washington.
- Backstage Teddy told Eddie he had a match against a secret opponent tonight.
- Backstage, Josh Mathews interviewed Christian. This was really funny, Christian kept referring to Mathews as Ryan Seacrest, and said if he wanted proof that Christian was the only man in recent memory to main-event Raw and Smackdown in the same week, he should go back to his parents house, go to the basement, (he has his own room now), get online, close the "Tan Men of the Mediteranean" page, and go on a wrestling site. Seacrest Out.
- Backstage, Heidenreich read a poem to Animal. Animal said Heidenreich was more like Hawk then he realized.
- Another Great American video aired featuring JBL and Neil Armstrong. GOLD.
- Animal & Heidenreich d. Julio Dinero & Nick Berk (Nick was the first of a few to pull double duty tonight)- Match lasted about 5 seconds. Heidenreich tossed one of the guys out of the ring, then they hit the Doomsday Device for the win.
- Chris Benoit d. Eddie Guerrero via countout. This was a good match. Started slow, but it really turned out good. My favorite part was when Eddie went to the top rope. Benoit cut him off and hit two headbutts (busting himself open), and then hit a pretty sick superplex. Rey attacked Eddie after he was counted out.
- Video package for Taker-Hassan.
- Candice came out and said that GAB would be available to all the troops for free. Melina interrupted her and said that she heard Candice would be the referee of her match on Sunday. Melina then beat Candice down, she hit a pretty stiff forearm when they were on the groud. She stripped Candice down before Torrie came out for the save.
- Great American video featuring JBL and Martin Luther King. At this point I was ROTF.
- Booker T d. Simon Dean (2nd man to pull double duty). Nothing of interest from the match but Simon Dean had the Line of the Night:
"Booker, I respect you. But I don't respect your wife. That's because she doesn't go the buffet line once, she doesn't go to the buffet line twice, she goes 5 times, 5 times, 5 times"
LMAO
- Great American Video package featuring JBL and Ronald Reagan. This never got old, they should continue next week.
- Up next was JBL's Victory Speech. OJ came out first to introduce him. JBL came out in a convertible, sitting on top dressed as Uncle Sam. I can not describe how funny this was. There was red, white, and blue confetti all over the place. JBL started talking about how he is the man on Smackdown. Then he showed this months Smackdown magazine cover, featuring Batista. JBL the unveiled next months cover, which was a picture of him standing over Batista with the belt on a US Flag background.
JBL started talking about other countries saying they hate America because we have money and we give it to them. Kids are starving in Africa, U.S gives them a handout. Asia was hit with a tsunami "Oh you had a bad storm, here's a handout". Then he said the reason the fans all hate him is because he's rich and we're poor. The other JBL fans and myself were clapping and cheering, while everybody else booed.
Finally, Batista came out. He had some decent mic work, but he got stale near the end. My favorite line from the segment was:
"Do you realize how ridiculous you look in that"
Batista and JBL echanged a few punches, and JBL ran off. Batista hit OJ with a spinebuster, and posed in the Uncle Sam hat to end the show.
Post-Show Dark Match:
Batista, Rey Mysterio, and The Undertaker d. JBL, Triple H, and Eddie (Eddie and Rey are the 3rd and 4th to pull double duty)- There was a lot of comedy here. When Rey was beating up Eddie, Eddie ran over and grabbed Triple H. Rey slammed Eddie's head into Hunters crotch. Then they did the same with JBL.
Another funny moment was when Rey was on the ground and Hunter went to the top and jumped off. Rey got his feet up and hit Hunter on the chin. Trips backed up into the corner with his head tilted back and stood like that for a full minute. Then he started to walk, and did a perfect Flair Flop.
The ending saw JBL and Eddie leave Triple H, who was surrounded by the faces. Rey hit the 619, Batista hit a spinebuster, and Undertaker tombstoned Trips for the win.
Notes:
-This might have been the best show I ever attended. There were good matches, although most of them had bad finishes. The promos and video packages were great, and the crowd was hot all night.
Biggest Pops:
1. Batista- HUGE POP
2. Triple H- No kidding
3. Rey Mysterio
4. Undertaker
5. Christian - no kidding
Most Heat:
1. JBL
2. Eddie Guerrero
3. Muhhamad Hassan (he didn't appear, but he was shown in a video)
4. Simon Dean
Line of the Night:
"Booker, I respect you. But I don't respect your wife. That's because she doesn't go the buffet line once, she doesn't go to the buffet line twice, she goes 5 times, 5 times, 5 times"
