In This Very Ring.... (Column #117) Jericho's push, John Cena, Booker T

Yo yo yo. It's time for In This Very Ring....

I hate school holidays. Damn kids everywhere! And that means everyone at work scrambles to take their holidays at this time too. All work and no play makes Big D one angry person. And believe me, over the past three or so weeks I haven't been playing anything! Grrr.

So Jericho is set to face John Cena at SummerSlam with the WWE title on the line. I must say that both Jezza and creative have done a great job in re-vamping Jezza and making him in to a credible opponent for the leader of the Chain Gang despite the Champs best efforts in dragging things down to his school yard level (More on this later). Y2J has been an absolute hoot over the past few weeks, from commanding the troops for the lumberjack match to the genius forfeiting of the battle of the bands. Let's not forget Y2J calling Carlito Side Show Bob either. That was probably the funniest thing said on WWE TV so far this year. Jericho's reasoning for abandoning the contest was bang on. His comment about the fans being brainwashed was almost too real. Now, as good as Jezza has been and can continue to be, even with creative backing him, how many of us (apart from perhaps me) really thing that Jericho will become the King Of The World once more and become the champ? Not many I would say. So, having said that I found it strange that WWE commented on the Jericho contract rumours on WWE.com. To those who didn't see, the rumours had it that Jezza was set to have a little time off very soon to go on tour with his band Fozzy. Some speculating that it would be just after SummerSlam. The SummerSlam that Jericho is in a World Title Bout. If true, it kind of gives away the result of that particular bout. Then, WWE.com reported that Jezza had signed a contract extension. Again, those in the know pointed to it being just a short extension that would still allow Chris to take his band touring time off. WWE.com itself never gave any hints to as when and where Jericho was taking this time adding more fuel to the rumour mongers fire that it was still set to be just after SummerSlam. Now, if all this had come about a couple of months ago, I wouldn't have really thought anymore off it, but in this day and age of worked shoots, semi shoots, quasi-shoots and outright shoots are the WWE once again playing the net? I am sure by now, with the Matt Hardy and Blue Meanie situations, the WWE no longer looks upon the net as a small bunch of marks but as a very large part of their weekly audience (with marks). Hell, Kevin Nash was on WWE.com giving his views on HBK and Hogan the same time as Marty Jannetty, a guy they have just recently released, was on Byte This. Now if that isn't odd then I don't know what is. So is all this Jericho talk a big bluff? Are we all thinking that Jericho is off after SummerSlam so as the title change is a big shock? Maybe. Or, is it a big double bluff? Are we to think that Jericho isn't really going and all this is a work to shock us when the title change comes but really he isn't going to win but we are left thinking that he might? Cripes! Or, Am I looking in to this way to much? Whatever the outcome of this little lot it sure has me second guessing and that can only be a good thing right?

Ok. On to the other party in this feud. John Cena. The more and more I watch Cena the less and less I like him. If he's not ripping off Austin with his against the boss routine he's doing his best Rock impression with his childish insults. The only difference is that Stone Cold was the ultimate anti hero with his no nonsense attitude and The Rock oozed that much natural charisma that he could still come off as ice block cool while he was telling the fans how he was gonna shine up something real nice just to shove it up someone's candy ass. Cena just struggles to look credible either way. Well, credible to anyone over the age of 20 I would guess as there is no denying that Cena's school yard insults and gay jibes do appeal to the, ahem, school yard kids. Let's not forget Cena's hilarious walking away from Eric when his back was turned. I bet it's the same school yard kids who plough all their cash in to buying his merchandise. The same kids that plough all their parents cash in to his merchandise. The same kids that cheer and scream the arena down every time Cena blinks. WWE creative can't be blamed for taking this route with Cena as its plainly obvious that this is demographic that Cena should be aimed at but for me, I just find it all a bit too dull. But it does look like that I better get used to it because the Bad Bad Man (how appropriate is that) looks set to be around for a long time yet.

Just when you think that the Mexicools have no one to fight the WWE go out and re-sign Brian 'Spanky' Kendrick and James 'Jamie Noble' Gibson. Talk about another shocker. I would never have guessed in a million years that these two would be brought back in. Yeah, both left on good-ish terms and both had some success on WWE soil. But can they be as or more successful than before? Jamie Noble was one of the most pushed cruisers in WWE history. Not just a Cruiserweight champion, Noble was used in many storylines that were given loads of TV and PPV time. And he was over too. Noble's Trailer Trash come in to money character was really good and very funny. When Noble was a heel he was really over, and at one point it looked like the fans were ready to cheer for Noble and turn him in to a fan favourite. Either way, the fans were in to him. His solid in ring abilities and good steady matches did him no harm with the fans either. So, if Noble comes back with the same attitude and work rate and creative are willing to get behind him then I can't see why Jamie Noble can't go back to being a solid rock in the Cruiser division. When he pops back up on TV all he needs to say is 'Weeers maaa Neeedia' and it will be like he's never been away. Unless they plan on making him Italian and making him Nunzio's cousin....

Spanky on the other hand didn't really get the success he could have gotten in the WWE if creative got behind him. His success came from his willingness to do anything that was asked of him on TV and his crowd pleasing antics. Hopefully second time round Spanky won't be asked to do too many silly things and he will be allowed to develop a decent character. A heel one perhaps. Spanky Vs London if given the right build up and time has classic written all over it. Kendrick vs. Rey too (if Rey ever gets out off wrestling Eddie) would be a right barn burner. In fact, with Kendrick's skills, which ever side of the fence he sits, he should be tearing the house down every week.

It was fun to see bland Booker T get booed out of the building at the Great American Bash PPV. Booker has not really changed since his days in WCW. He has really had no character developments. All we know is that he is a Five time WCW champ, he will shout sucka and regular intervals and he will do the spineroonie. Great. So to give Booker T some depth they add his wife Sharmell to the mix as his manager/valet. That's just made things worse. Not only is Booker stuck in WCW hell he now has to look like a pussy whipped loser on TV every week as his woman does all the jive talking for him. Great stuff. And if that it wasn't bad enough that SharmHell is on TV she actually gets to talk/scream/shriek in every god damn segment she's in. I swear it's enough to make me want to turn over. Not only is SharmHell killing my ears she is killing any slim chance that Booker T has of moving forwards. Sharmell needs to be gone. Sooner rather than Later. I'd rather look at that strange growth on MNM's publisher Jillian's face than have to endure Sharmell on my TV.
