Notes on the new WWE Developmental Territory Deep South Wrestling
On Monday, August 1, 2005 at 2:03 PM EST The new WWE developmental territory Deep South Wrestling is currently looking a start date on either the third or fourth Thursday of August to hold their first TV taping for the promotion. The Deep South facility is located in a strip mall in McDonough, Georgia and is said to be much smaller than OVW's Davis Arena. No local TV timeslots are lined up as of yet, although Bill Behrens will be handling all aspects of that. Although not confirmed, many feel the promotion will be replacing Bill Behrens' current NWA Wildside Classics program that is syndicated across the United States and available on channel 25 in DeKalb, Georgia and on various UPN affiliates in Georgia.
As previously reported, Bill DeMott and Jody Hamilton are currently the head trainers of the promotion and have been running wrestlers through what has been described as a heavy rotation of training exercises that includes lots of cardio and squats. Deep South is expected to open their doors to the public once the "grand opening" takes place. They will be accepting new students at that point who wish to pay to train as well as working with current performers under developmental deals with WWE. Those already training in Deep South at the moment includes The Shane Twins and MTV Real World star Mike Mizanin.
It should be noted that some have been comparing the promotion already to the old WCW Power Plant, which does make sense to a degree since Hamilton did head it up years ago. The only downside to that comparison is that Deep South might be looked at as a promotion that help wrestlers develop great bodies, but a lack of in-ring skills. However, some feel WWE is starting to get the developmental process of wrestlers these days and that Deep South could be a starting point for new trainees who then would jump up to OVW to develop in-ring skills and promos. The next step from that would obviously be a roster spot with either RAW or SmackDown.
