Ring of Honor returns to Dayton, OH tonight with the following card:
CM Punk vs James Gibson vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe- ROH World Title Elimination Match. Lot of history in this one. Punk won the belt at Death Before Dishonor III in June, and has been on a heel tear since, defeating hand-picked mid-carders Jay Lethal and Roderick Strong, as well as going to a time limit draw with Daniels. He also defeated James Gibson on 7/16. Punk has a long and storied history in ROH with Chris Daniels, dating back to 2003. Also, let's not forget the Samoa Joe/CM Punk epic trilogy for the ROH World Title in 2004. On top of that, Joe has wins in ROH over Gibson and Daniels as well. Gibson and Daniels will meet in ROH for the first time tonight. Can Punk beat the odds and go on to face long-time friend Colt Cabana in Chicago for the ROH World Title?
Matt Hardy vs Homicide. Hardy made his debut in ROH on 7/16, defeating Christopher Daniels. He will be working in ROH this weekend as well, as he took the dates while he was released from WWE. Homicide is an ROH veteran, having been with the company since 2002. Hardy said he wanted to face the top guys in ROH, and Homicide has earned his place among them through the years.
Austin Aries, Roderick Strong & Matt Sydal vs Alex Shelley, Jimmy Rave & Abyss- 6 Man Tag. Sydal is teaming with Generation Next to battle their newest rivals, The Embassy. If Gen. Next is victorious, Sydal will become a member of GN, which would be a huge break for Sydal, who hasn't been a regular in ROH, but is very popular at the Midwest shows. Shelley is the former leader of GN, but Aries and co. ousted him at Final Battle 2004. Shelley had been a loner since then, seeking the trust of the ROH locker room. He couldn't find it however, and eventually joined up with Prince Nana's Embassy. Abyss is officially an Embassy member according to ROH, but will be used sparingly in a "hired gun" type role. This definately will be a hot way to put this feud into full force, with six very talented wrestlers all colliding in one match.
Jimmy Jacobs & BJ Whitmer vs Nigel McGuinness & Chad Collyer- ROH Tag Title Match. Whitmer & Jacobs are now two-time champs, with Whitmer of all people being the most decorated champion in ROH history, being a four-time tag champion. Nigel has been on a roll in ROH, picking up lots of wins in recent months, but not facing many top-teir opponents. Collyer has made infrequent ROH appearances in the last year, but he and Nigel have teamed a few times, picking up some wins on the tag scene.
Low Ki vs Jay Lethal This is a grudge match. These two met at Midnight Express Reunion in 2004, with Low Ki picking up the win. Low Ki was revealed as the man who attacked Jay Lethal in March, and at Manhattan Mayhem, Ki and Homicide gave Lethal a Double Stomp/Cop Killa, an absolutely sick spot which put Lethal out of ROH for a few months. Lethal says he won't stop his feud with the Rottweilers until he pins Low Ki.
Spanky vs Colt Cabana I believe this is the first time these two will meet one on one in ROH. Spanky, who is set to go back to WWE, will challange for the ROH Tag Titles tomorrow night in Chicago. Cabana will be facing CM Punk in Punk's final (for real this time we think) ROH match. They shouldn't look past tonight though, as both guys will need a win for momentum going into Saturday.
Ace Steel vs Delirious vs Matt Stryker vs Sterling James Keenan- Four Corner Survival. This should be a nice change of pace match. Steel has been in Japan for most of 2005, but is coming back for this weekend. Stryker has made scattered ROH appearances since early 2004 as well. Delirious is a crowd favorite; quite the wacky individual, and SJK will be making his ROH debut tonight. All of these guys would benefit from a win in this match.
