In This Very Ring.... (Column #118) William "Freakin" Regal, Batista, Hardy
On Friday, August 12, 2005 at 1:41 PM EST PC's! Damn things. My PC packed up again last week and this time it had to be sent back to the Packard Bell repair centre. IN HOLLAND! Good grief. It's back now (obviously) and all is well. For now.
This weekend coming there is going to be a memorabilia show at the NEC in Birmingham in the UK in which me, the Milkster, 'Er Indoors and Glencyclopedia are going to. Now I normally go to these shows just to see how much cash I can spend on old toys that I used to have as a kid. Usually paying well, well over the amount of what they are really worth. The show also boasts star guests that do autograph signings. In the past from this show I have managed to get Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Dirk Benedict of A-Team fame and Val Lehman from Prisoner:Cell Block H(An old Aussie soap. Don't ask). This years show is no different with many stars from TV, Film and Sport. Two WWE superstars were announced to be there too. Hence why Milky and the G-Man wanted to go. When the announcement came through that it was going to be Torrie and Scotty Too Hotty we were a tad disappointed to say the least. In the past we have been lucky enough to have met Kane, Victoria(twice) Hurricane, Torrie, Matt Hardy, RVD, Alex Shane and Ric Flair. So, SCOTTY TOO HOTTY! Could there be anyone on the roster that I would have wanted to meet less? No disrespect to Scotty as I'm sure he gives his all and he probably does have his fan(s) out there somewhere but he just doesn't do it for me. But then, last night I went on the Memorabilia web site just to check the opening times, imagine my surprise when I read that Scotty Too Hotty had cancelled. Cancelled and replaced by WILLIAM REGAL!! WILLIAM FREAKIN' REGAL! Now that's more like it. I have always enjoyed Regal's work and I found his autobiography(which I will get signed)to be easily as good as Mick Foley's first. So now we are all really looking forward to the show. Roll on Sunday! WhoooooooooooooooooHooooooooooo....
Isn't it funny how the same people that used to bash HHH every single week, week in week out without fail are now actually singing his praises. Turns out that now Batista isn't being carried by Hunter anymore the Animal is not looking as good in the ring. As much as I find HHH getting props from the net for a change amusing I think that Batista is getting a bit of a hard time. It takes two to tango as the saying goes and to be thrust in to a feud with probably one of SmackDown's worst workers in JBL(now, that's not a knock on JBL. I like what he does but Kenta Kobashi he isn't)is going to be tough going for anyone. The DQ outcome in their title match didn't help either. Screwjob endings like that really do anyone any good. Batista's character of a thinking mans power house is good. Most muscle heads don't get to look smart. Hell, most guys never get to make HHH the Cerebral Assassin look a fool. 'Tista's in ring work is fine too. His power based arsenal, although a mite limited, suits his style down to the ground. And I don't have a problem with Batista's matches going over twenty minutes either as even someone like Batista has to sell sometimes. The Animal's mike work can be a little iffy at times but by and large he is comfortable on the mic and while he's never going to be a Rock or an Austin, It's nice to see that a large intense man doesn't have to resort to screaming and shouting down the mic like a buffoon to get his point over. All in all, HHH or no HHH, Batista, in my eyes, is doing just fine in the role of champ, a role in which to be fair, he is still growing in to as Batista Vs JBL is the first main event feud that the Animal has had to do most of the carrying, and I can see even after losing the Title to JBL at SummerSlam after a Lesnar F5, Batista will be in the main event for many years to come yet.
Oooh, what's that noise? Oh, it's just the sound of the WWE dropping the ball with Matt Hardy. I can't really understand why Vince came out and announced that he had re-signed Matt Hardy to a WWE contract. Matt Hardy was a rebel. A rebel that didn't bow down to the WWE. Hell, he even said so in one of his run in promos. So why have him cut off at the knees and make him an official employee again? Matt should never have had a match on Raw this week either. Matt's return as an official roster guy should have been saved for a PPV. Hell, If I had my way it wouldn't have been at the upcoming SummerSlam either. I would have taken the real slow burn approach. Just look how over Sting was in WCW when he started appearing in the rafters attacking everyone and everything when he turned in to the Crow-esque Sting. Why not have done a similar thing With Matt. Hardy already had the Vigilante style Angelic Diablo gimmick going from his website and I believe fans would have bought in to it big time. Having Matt take his run ins a step further by having him go on the rampage each week and not just on Edge while making what happened between him, Edge and Lita(Is it really pronounced Dumah and not Dumas? Or is it because her surname can be easily be pronounced as DumAss? Answers to the usual address)as the catalyst for his change would give Matt an extra dimension and really separated him from the old V1 gimmick that he had before making him fresh. After this past weeks match with Snitsky, in which admittedly, a bulked up Matt did look good, it was as if he had never been away. The fans want to get behind Matt, that's plain to see but by having him compete as just another WWE wrestler the fan reaction was visibly less. And that is a real shame. Maybe the Powers that be don't think that Matt has what it takes to be a main eventer. We all know how Johnny Ace isn't Matt's biggest fan. Maybe the fact that a Matt Hardy Tee is already out after only a couple of weeks could be a case of lets capitalise quick before it all ends. And if it is all to end after SummerSlam then the majority of the blame must be laid at creative. Welcome back to the mid card Matt Hardy? We will have to wait and see.
So it's going to be Eddie Vs Rey Rey part 523826492 at the PPV with the rights to Dominic on the line. I really think that this story has gotten real silly now. I didn't think that Eddie Vs Rey needed any of this creative stuff when it all started and I was kind of hoping that this was going be one of those deals that was dropped and quietly forgotten about. You know, like Faarooq Asaad and his ash try for a helmet. But as the weeks went on it was obvious that this 'family' feud wasn't going to go away. Hopefully after SummerSlam it will come to an end but sadly I can't see it. Eddie will win and then we will have another 65965 bouts of Rey trying to win his 'son' back. There really is no need for all this and I swear if they have a Dominic on a pole match I will stop watching SD. Well, ok I wont but you know what I mean(Hey I can make Foley like hollow promises too).
While I am not usually a fan of the Face to face/contract signing segments that the WWE like to wheel out every now and then I have to say that I really enjoyed this weeks version with HBK and Hogan. In this day and age WWE of shoots, worked shoots and semi shoots WWE performers are being allowed to let a little truth come in to their fantasy land. And while as long that it doesn't cross the boundaries of taste and decency I am all for it. When HBK started to rip in to Hulk Hogan saying how he was all show and that he really didn't do anything in the ring was the truth. We all know it. The grapplers themselves all know it. But until Michaels this week, no one said it. HBK was going all guns blazing and wasn't holding anything back. Even making reference to Hogan's backstage politicking(Which was funny because Shawn himself has been known to pull a few strings backstage). It was classic great TV from The Heartbreak Kid. Hogan, not one to be overshadowed(The whole basis of this feud) let rip with a couple of beauties himself. Hulk's reminding us fans of when Michaels spat his dummy out and took his ball home, AKA Finding his smile was brilliant. Then Hogan brought out his trump card. Bret Hart. Mentioning the Hitman's name in reference to the Montreal screwjob(which I still think was a work)normally makes me roll my eyes and mutter leave it alone already under my breath but done how it was done this past Monday as a 'I'm sticking it to you HBK' it was ace. Michaels reaction to the fans chanting you screwed Bret was again classic HBK and served as a reminder that there are few in the business as good as him. All in all the whole segment came of as a real great piece of WWE TV. On the night of the PPV HBK is going to have be at his very best. Win or lose HBK is going to have to have the match of his career to have anything that resembles a half decent match with Hogan. Hogan's days of holding his own in matches has long gone(I know your thinking did he ever but he did)and while I am sure that Hogan will give all the showmanship in the world, HBK will be providing all the ring work. Will HBK be suckered in to the usual Hogan match and routines? Will HBK bump like a Jobronie to get the match over? Will Hogan allow Shawn to be the Showstopper? Will we have a clean ending? It's going be an interesting one to watch that's for sure.
