With TNA doing the same, WTR Sunday Night made their own sacrifice, as Tim Stein and JJ Sexay ran the show by themselves, along with special guest, Michael Barry from NWA Universal.

The show opened with Tim and JJ talking about some of this week’s hottest news in wrestling, including Christian’s bleeding hard-way at a house show, when his head got caught awkwardly in a Booker T scissors kick. Throughout the show, they gave updates from the Sacrifice PPV, before talking about the Eugene Invitational and the tough time Kurt Angle had being a heel in his hometown on Raw.

They continued their rundown of Raw, with a lament over Shelton Benjamin doing the job to Chris Masters, and the continuing push of Rob Conway. The show moved to talk of next weekend’s SummerSlam, as they previewed the John Cena/Chris Jericho title match, which turned into a criticism of the WWE’s creative team. With TNA starting on Spike TV shortly, Tim and JJ talked about the recent mass-releases by the WWE, and how the WWE are viewing TNA as competition, judging by the fact that they’re refusing to let the released wrestlers work for TNA during their 90-day no-competes.

Midway through the second hour, NWA Universal’s “Mr Saturday Night” Michael Barry joined the show, building up to next weekend’s NWA Universal show featuring none other than Charlie Haas.

Tim’s first question for Michael was “what kind of drunk is JJ?” Michael answered by giving us a rundown about their usual night out, and how JJ quickly started picking fights with random people… and large women. JJ then confessed to falling while going up some ring steps, before recapping a story involving the Naturals, a broken shaker of salt and a whole lot of alcohol. Listen to the full show here

They then asked Michael about his early days. Michael said that he grew up watching wrestling, and after he graduated, he spoke to a promoter from Oklahoma Pro Wrestling about training to be a wrestler. He put it off for a bit to continue school, but after WrestleMania X-7 in Houston, he decided to take the plunge, and started his training shortly after the PPV. His early matches were in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

JJ asked Michael about what he wants in his immediate future – asking whether he’d rather go for the NWA Oklahoma title, or the X Division belt. This turned into something of a mini-promo on (current) NWA Oklahoma champion John O’Malley. Michael then talked about working with Tracey Smothers, saying that the opportunity to train with him helped give him a new philosophy about wrestling, as he was working with someone who’d been in the business for so long.

JJ then asked Michael where he saw himself in five years time – he said he was hoping to be in TNA in five years, as it gave him more potential for being a bigger name for the future. He said that he’d spoken to Bob Ryder about several things, but admitted that he needed to hone certain skills before going for a TNA tryout. They then asked which product he preferred: TNA or WWE. Michael said that while both products are entertaining, he preferred TNA as there seemed to be more chance of upward mobility for younger talents, whereas WWE put on matches based on the custody of a child.

They told another Naturals drinking story, as the TNA PPV continued in the background, with Michael predicting that TNA will grow to the next level once they hit Spike TV in October, saying that it was time for wrestling to enter its next boom period. Michael then left the show, saying that he’ll be on top of the wrestling world, sooner, rather than later.

After Michael left, JJ and Tim continued to run down the TNA PPV, and recapped several more news stories featuring the Iron Shiek, a former Miss Nitro contest winner and former WWE valet Hiroko.
