In This Very Ring.... (#120) - Cade and Murdoch, Carlito, Undertaker, more

Let's get goin'!

I saw the new Dukes Of Hazard film a couple of days ago and I got to say that I really enjoyed it. Yeah, It got some shocking reviews and the two guys, Knoxville and William Scott probably wouldn't have been my first choice for Bo and Luke (Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson would have been my choice but they already have a franchise with Starsky and Hutch)and Daisy Duke had brown hair in the original series(leaving myself open to ridicule there but...) but as supporting actors to the real star, the General Lee, they did good. A good story, some cracking jokes and some amazing car scenes all added up to one fantastic movie. Looking forward to buying it on DVD. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEH HAAAAAAAAAAAW!

In an amazing follow up, I am going to start by talking about the latest tag team in the WWE. Cade and Murdoch. Over the past few weeks we have been introduced to Cade and Murdoch with a series of vignettes. (Better than just throwing a brand new team out with no introduction ala' the Heart Throbs.) Even though I have a soft spot for all things cowboy/redneck, I found the skits quite good and funny. Especially Trevor Murdoch's Deliverance-esque description of what he was going to do with his opponent and his use of the word 'Purdy'. Heh. Cade also has shown unseen flashes of charisma too as the full of confidence cowboy heading to the WWE. So with the introductions out of the way, this week saw the in ring debut of Cade and Murdoch. Catchy Cowboy music? Check. Kitted out to look like a tag team? Check. Opening match win? Check. Exciting debut? Well. As a team they didn't set anything on fire but they did look more than competent with flashes of good stuff. I guess some of the problem is that Cade and Murdoch's first match was against the current tag team champs and Heat regulars, Rosey and The Hurricane. Thus meaning that it wouldn't be a total squash and the new boys would have at least be on the defensive for some of the bout. I am always a fan of when teams have to work their way up the ranks rather than right in to the tag champs. Then again, I guess that Cade and Murdoch have worked their way up the ranks as the Heroes are the only face tag team on Raw aren't they? And no, I don't count Big Vis and Val. And there lies Cade and Murdoch's biggest problem (or any tag team for that matter) How can the fans be expected to get behind or jeer any tag team when the division has such a lack of depth it's a forgone conclusion that they will get the tag belts anyway? I have written in the past about the tag team divisions and how much of a desperate state they are in but hell, is it really worth having the belts at all now on either show? There are two tag teams on each show. 'Kin ell, that's not enough even for one show. It's wrong. Plain wrong. Especially when you look back and see the great tag teams of the past from The Bulldogs and Hart Foundation to Demolition(pre Crush)to Hawk and Animal through to NAO, Hardy Boys and Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boys(or whatever they are calling themselves these days) there has been some great teams and they have lit the WWF/E up so why not now? Does Vince really believe that Tag teams make no money? If that is true then I would rather they abandon it all together rather than just have a token gesture. Anyways, Back to Cade and Murdoch. I hope that they get a chance to get over and I hope that the WWE adds more decent tag teams to both Raw and SD and I hope Tag team wrestling becomes an important part of the WWE again. But I can't see it. Can you? But this is what I am betting on will happen. Lance and Trevor will go over Vis and Val next week on Raw, face the Super heroes at the PPV, win the titles, defend them against the former champs the following night on Raw and then end up on Heat every week. Mark my words. RIP Tag division.

So, even though Carlito is the current I.C champ and host of his own show and hardly ever defends the title or gets in the ring and when he does he gets whooped as a comedy character like his should, we are supposed to believe that he made a mess of Ric Flair backstage last week. Talk about unbelievable. Carlito has shown me nothing whatsoever since his debut that would lead me to believe that he was capable of such an act. Carlito has been made out to be the cowardly heel that scrapes a win. Hell, he doesn't even have a finisher to end his mostly boring offence. I have given CCC the benefit of the doubt and I want to like him as it could be a good gimmick and the Cabana is pretty funny, depending on the guest but when it gets in to the ring it all goes, well, a bit dull. Even when Carlito was in the ring with 'Mr Over' John Cena, crowd reaction was at a minimum and that is what I fear will happen at the PPV against a newly faced Ric Flair(Um.. what did Slick Ric do to turn face exactly?)Fan reaction is almost guaranteed for Flair and Carlito has a real chance to up his game and put himself on the map as win or lose, a good showing against a Flair that can still go when he wants to, will go a long way in establishing Carlito as more as a punch bag for the top line guys. As an Intercontinental Champion shouldn't be. Although Flair grabbing Carlito's 'Apples' was not a good start. As much as I enjoy the comedy/crazy Flair with the dropping of random knees and elbows that and the other comedy routine spots(you know, tossed of the top rope, Flair flop, flying over the turnbuckle) they have to be checked at the gate for the PPV bout. I live in hope. Carlito, your time is now.

Is there any real need for the Undertaker to be using his 'Deadman Powers' to set an oversized cheque on fire in this day and age? It just looks stupid. I can just about swallow the Undertaker being the Deadman again even though thanks to the WWE and DDP we know that he has a Mrs, he has a huge ranch that he rides around on a quad bike and he has a FITTED KITCHEN! SURELY A DEAD MAN FROM DEATH VALLEY USES HIS POWERS TO SHOOT LIGHTNING AT A PASSING COW FOR A GREAT BBQ TASTE! sorry, I got a little carried away there. I always believed that the reason that the 'Taker's American Badass persona was such a hit was due in part to the Deadman being humanized somewhat(Like Kane)so we could relate to him a little more. Now it's back to the 'Die die die rolling eyes shooting lightning crap. Ugh, The Rand deserves better. Here's hoping that the silly segment on SD was the end of the daftness and Orton can go on to Batista and the World Title and The Oldertaker can, well, go back to the ranch.

WWE.com went T shirt voting crazy over the past three days with us fans having the chance to vote on new tees for MNM, Christian and The Rand. And in a shocking turn of events he majority of the tees for all five superstars were pretty cool. Obviously the anticipation of a new Christian tee is bigger than ones for the others. Euro(shit)shop better be stocking them that's all I can say as you can never have enough tees. Despite what 'She who must be obeyed' says.

I got to say that the WWE did an amazing job this week in promoting Chris Masters and his Masterlock. Shame that it is being all wasted on such a no talent musclehead. To be fair to Masters he has done his best in the Masterlock challenge and he is ok on the mic but peeeeeeew does he stink in the ring. Even the great HBK(you don't know how much that sticks in the throat)could struggle in dragging something decent out of Masters. I thought that Masters should have made Michaels pass out to the Masterlock without much fuss this week adding some much needed drama and psychology to the actual bout by having HBK know he can't get out of the move and having to avoid it at all costs. They also should have saved the Bret Hart style run up the turnbuckle manoeuvre for the PPV too. This match needs all the help it can get. Maybe HBK's ego is doing a Hogan and running wild and maybe he thinks that he can carry Masters and add another notch on his Iconic status. Maybe this time though I think The Heartbreak Kid has bitten off more than he can chew.
