What Does Everybody Want!? In This Very Ring.... Of course.
Oh what a night last Saturday was. The 1PW 'A Cruel Twist Of Fate' show was just awesome. I will not go down the road of reviewing every match seeing the show was a five hour marathon, it would take me forever and a day to recap that bad boy (All the results can be found at www.1p-w.com). So I am just going to go with the standout points of the night for me.
Getting pictures and autographs at the meet and greet from AJ Styles, Tracy Smothers, Tommy Dreamer, Doug Williams and Steve Corino was unreal. Corino in particular was great and he seemed to be having a real blast and having fun with the fans. AJ too seemed to be having a ball. Styles even jokingly said he was going to kick my mate Milky's ass for wearing a Chris Daniels tee. Being the mate that I am, I offered to hold him. Like Styles would need my help.Heh. Comedy also ensued when Dreamer ran out of Five pound notes and he ended up owing cash to three or four fans that included my bro Glenn. It was funny and kind of surreal seeing Dreamer ask The Blue Meanie if he had any change. But all that paled in comparison to me meeting the one and only Al Snow. As you may (or may not know) I am a huge fan of the Snowman and never in my wildest dreams would I think that I would ever get a chance to meet and get a picture with Al. I did and I did. Not once not twice but thrice! First time up Al signed my HEAD we had a quick chat and a picture. He was so cool it was unreal. And in an unbelievable move, I managed to keep my cool. I had visions of me just falling to pieces in front of him. Second time up it was a little different. As Al was signing two promo photos for me Milky thought that would be the ideal time to tell Snow how much of a mark I was when I found out that he was announced for the show and how Milky thought that I was going to have a heart attack and keel over with excitement. As Al was chuckling all that came out of my mouth was a whole load of ums, errs, and heh. Great. Thanks a bunch Milky! After another Picture, a slightly flustered me swiftly moved on as Al was still having a giggle. The third time, which was after the event had finished, Al walked around the ring to meet a few of the fans that were hanging around. Of course I was there. Another picture and a brief chat confirmed that Al Snow was indeed coming back for the 'No Turning Back' shows in Doncaster on January the 6th and 7th. I already have my tickets to the January the 7th show.
As for the show it self. Well, Al predicable lost against Corino in an AWA World title bout in the match of the night that featured just about everything from wrestling to brawling to a fake injury(which Corino sold so well we ALL bought it)near falls, run ins and the stealing of popular WWE stars finishers. The sight of Al and Steve doing such moves as the Peoples Elbow, Angle Slam, Ankle Lock, Pedigree, Garvin Stomp, Hogan hulk up big boot legdrop combo, a 3D(from Meanie and Snow) and Mr Socko(Complete with Al taking his boot of mid match so he could his own sock)so was just too funny. I'll say it again Best match of the night. Sandman's entrance has to be experienced to be believed. Never being a big Sandy fan, even I was stood up singing along to Metallica as the Drunken one(and boy was he drunk) made his way through the crowd. Awesome spectacle live. Raven was a hoot on the mic proving once again that he is one of the best in the business on the stick. And I don't think even I can put in to words the sight of the Blue Meanie and Tracy Smothers having a dance off mid match! Abyss is huge. I mean HUUUUUUUUUGE. And he ended up in some thumb tacks during the match(we managed to blag some tacks from the ring too thanks to the G-Man). Calling AJ Styles Phenomenal isn't just a gimmick. The things that man can do in the ring are just outrageous. Styles even managed to get the Styles Clash on Abyss. Now that's impressive. And as for that Springboard Flying Forearm/elbow move. Wowzers. For those of you that have not seen this guy live, if you get the chance go. You will not be disappointed.
All in all the card was probably the best one I have ever been to. And I can't wait for the show in January.
On to this weeks WWE.
What was wrong with Piper on Raw? I don't remember Foley being thrown off 25 steel cages and slammed on to Thumbtakes! Ah, the beauty of live TV. Just when Piper thought that things couldn't get any worse or anymore embarrassing, Randy Orton came down and ripped his tee off revealing his large pasty white gut. Only slightly less horrible than seeing Mae Young in her Bra. Things did pick up a little for Roddy on SmackDown as he did pick up a win against the Ortons. The match was kind of ugly but I guess it served its purpose in helping gain interest in the match for No Mercy between The Undertaker and Bob and Rand. I got to say that I was real disappointed that Cowboy Bob didn't keep his neck brace on. Obviously his neck heals faster than his arm.
As much as it pisses me off when the stars of one show turn up on the other show I really enjoyed the final wild brawl that ended Raw. What I didn't enjoy though was the way they built up towards it. SmackDown is already viewed as the lesser show of the two and the B show to Raw's A show. So why the hell have Bischoff come out and basically confirm the status of SD being second rate by berating them and then turning the lights off(A whole new meaning to the term Dark Match). There had to be a better way to set up the run in at the end of the show that protected the SD guys. Hell, the SD guys even got ejected from the ring at the end of the brawl, again, showing that RAW is the stronger of the two brands. Unless the SD boys are made to look good against the Raw team in the upcoming weeks then the rumoured upcoming Survivor Series bouts pitting Raw Vs SmackDown will be pointless.
Stone Cold Steve Austin returned and it was business as usual for the Bionic Redneck. I know that it was billed as a homecoming but did Austin really need to make it just like his home with women knocked out and laid on the floor? Joking aside I really did enjoy the whole segment. Yeah, it dragged a little towards the end and Linda never EVER needs to take the Stunner again, but as a whole it was fun. Plain fun. Seeing Shane O come down to the ring only to receive a Stunner before he got a chance to do or say anything was great. The only thing that would have taken the segment even further would have been an appearance from Stone Colds biggest in ring nemesis The Rock. But I guess with Hogan laying out a challenge(albeit a rushed one)to the Rattlesnake later in the show, the WWE wanted to remind everyone what Austin was all about so by rights that part of the show had to be Austin and Austin alone. If the WWE do go down the road of Austin Vs Hogan then the biggest question will be just who will do the job. The two biggest stars ever. That's some ego right there. Stunner Vs Legrop. Just who will hit their almost un-kick-out-able move? Whenever the WWE decide to put this bout on its going to be one interesting ride. One thing I can guarantee. There will be at least one ref bump.
Two of the newest additions to the SmackDown roster have caught my eye just recently, the first is Bobby Lashley. Hells Bells is this guy put together. Early showings in the ring have been very promising with a believable power based arsenal backing up his super human look. The guy has no problems in selling either as he looked good taking a few hits from token jobber #87587 this week so no worries in that department. Bobby's uber dominator style finisher is cool too. Needs a name though. How about the Whip-Lash? The only thing that Lashley has yet to do is have any prolonged time on the mic. If Bobby can conquer that side of the game too then, given the right amount of care and attention, Bobby Lashley could be a major player on SmackDown. And God knows, they need it.
The Other Guy who is taking SD by storm is Ken Kennedy. After a brief stint as Mr Anderson, a newly named Mr Kennedy came out and started to make SmackDown his home. Kennedy has the look(a cross between Nash and Billy Gunn)the moves(Top rope finisher is unreal for a guy his size)and charisma by the boat load. The last time I saw a newcomer with this much charisma was when a third generation superstar by the name of Rocky Miavia started to morph in to the People champion The Rock. The WWE have also got big plans for Kennedy as he now has his own unique mic that comes from the rafters to go with his unique way of introducing himself. Got to love the repeating of his surname too. What is being set out as a heat getting annoyance could easily become the catchphrase that turns Ken face eventually. When asked why he repeated himself Mr. Kennedy replied 'Cos I like it.... And it's funny'. Awesome, just awesome. Like I said, Charisma by the Boat load. And after this Sunday, Mr. Kennedy has the chance to skyrocket in my estimation as he goes against Bob Holly. Hopefully the WWE will continue to push the boat out for Kennedy and a good win this Sunday against a tough veteran like Sparky will help Ken Kennedy on his rise to the top.
