It was reported by Variety yesterday that Spike TV has purchased the rights to all six Star Wars films for an asking price of $70 million. According to the report, Spike made the move to purchase the films in order to restore some ground lost with the departure of World Wrestling Entertainment programming in early October.
Other competitors that Spike TV outbid included the USA Network and Turner Broadcasting. Spike actually brought up the asking price quite a bit to ensure the rights to the films over anyone else. As noted before, the article made it clear that Spike made this aggressive move in order to offset the loss of WWE programming. There are plans for the first film to hit the cable network in April of 2008 which will accompany a series of marathons.
