OVW "Head" trainer Al Snow talks about developing wrestlers at OVW, how to get 'over,' and Donna's Ride to benefit Leukemia:::
On October 23, Wrestling Weekly Co-hosts Doc Young and Les Thatcher welcomed Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) trainer and former WWE Superstar best known for his "Head" gimmick, Al Snow to the program.
Starting the night off, the hot topic of the week was introduced by Bruce Mitchell of the PW Torch. The topic of discussion was about TNA's programming on SpikeTV and that night's PPV, "Bound for Glory." Bruce commiserated with Doc and Les by offering his critiques, theories, and suggestions for TNA, which led into Doc and Les' predictions for the PPV's outcome.
Al Snow joined Doc and Les on the road by cell phone. Until he sells his house, he is still making the long ride each week down to Louisville, KY as head trainer and developer of WWE hopefuls at OVW. The wrestlers at OVW train Monday through Thursday, which means Al has to make the trip every week to be on hand Monday morning.
Asked about some of the athletes currently in training at OVW, Dean Visk (aka Dean Jablonski) was mentioned. Al said he is "developing great." He also said Dean has a tremendous gimmick in the works that makes Al laugh every time he sees the promos. It's a type-A personality style and Al says, "He screams all the time." Al said Dean works very hard, he's willing to take criticism, and never complains. He summed Dean up by saying, "Dean Visk applies himself." He also made a point to say that not just one of the guys there has "the most potential." He said, "That's why they're all there" and is thrilled by how well they all are doing.
Al suggested that when wrestlers are working on their career development, whether it is in the early stages or after garnering some experience, the object is always to sell tickets. Wrestlers have to be over not only with the fans but with the office and the writers too. He said, "It is your responsibility to get yourself over." He said when a company like the WWE puts a worker out there, the wrestler is essentially a commercial. What he meant was the performer must ask how much time and money the company has invested in you when they give you five or six minutes on air.
Even though sometimes it's hard for wrestlers to be let go, especially after a run at WWE, but he said, "Sometimes it's better for you to not be in the loving embrace of WWE." He thinks getting released can be a great opportunity even though it doesn't seem that way at the time. It can be an excellent time to redevelop, recreate the character, and ultimately create a new spot for again.
Les asked Al about plans for WWE to air another "Tough Enough" program. Al said there aren't any in the works. He said "Las year's show was a compromise to get it on the air." When Al was asked about the recent release of Jim Ross he said, "it's a shame and "JR had a great run. The wrestling business will miss him."
Les made a point to ask Al about his love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the annual event he spearheads in honor of his sister Donna Stanley who succumbed to leukemia a few years ago. "Donna's Ride," the benefit event to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association has been a tremendous success. Last year with the help of friends including wrestlers from the WWE, they were able to raise $18,000. Many of the wrestling stars were on hand to sign autographs and participate in the long bike ride. Al hopes to duplicate the success of last year and raise more money this year for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, myeloma, and all blood-related cancers.
The next show on October 30 will feature Dave Prazak, the man behind the mic on Ring of Honor, and more recently, the new all-woman fed, Shimmer. Sunday's show will also feature the return of a man who refuses to give it up, wrestling and hardcore legend Terry Funk.
Wrestling Weekly Radio featuring Doc Young and LesThatcher can be heard every Sunday from 6:00-8:00 pm EST at www.wrestlingweekly.com.
