“Wrestling’s Underbelly” Provides Insight into WWE Writing Policies and the Inner Workings of the Independents
Oct. 26, 2005—PublishAmerica has announced the release of Wrestling’s Underbelly: From Bingo Halls to Shopping Malls, the half non-fiction, half fiction literary work of Canadian wrestling writer and promoter, James “Jimmy Van” VanderLinden.
The non-fiction portion documents VanderLinden’s trials and tribulations working the independent wrestling circuit in Canada. Read his account of working with everyone from promising newcomers like "Showtime" Eric Young, Bobby Rude and Angel Williams, to aging superstars like Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, to controversial characters like American Wrestling Association promoter Dale Gagner, and former World Wrestling Entertainment Champion The Ultimate Warrior. VanderLinden then documents his discussions with WWE about a creative writing position, and explains the company’s guidelines and requirements.
VanderLinden’s WWE revelations then segue into the fictional aspect of Wrestling’s Underbelly, as he shares actual storyline scripts submitted to WWE at their request and reveals the surprising turn of events that subsequently came about.
“Wrestler autobiographies and opinionated works about the WWE product are becoming commonplace as the pro wrestling genre of book becomes more popular,” VanderLinden says. “The perspective of an independent wrestling promoter and aspiring WWE writer is uniquely different, and anyone familiar with that world knows that there’s a good story to be told.”
A preview chapter from Wrestling’s Underbelly is now available for free on the book’s official website, WrestlingBelly.com.
