Terry Funk on Hardcore Homecoming, retirement, and the ICP and Dave Prazak on the Women of Shimmer:::

This week on Wrestling Weekly, Doc Young presented an abbreviated version of the program October 30 when he co-hosted with the man behind Voice of Wrestling, Chris Cash, as his filled in for Les Thatcher who was feeling a bit under the weather Sunday.

Doc and Chris opened up the hour long show by talking about Jerry Jarrett's surprising meeting with WWE this week, the possibility of TNA eventually going head to head with WWE on Mondays, and speculating whether Sting will really eventually end up on RAW.

Dave Prazak, the wrestling mainstay for Ring of Honor and Full Impact Pro, just name a couple of feds on his vast resume as ring announcer, color commentator, and wrestling manager, talked mostly about his newest endeavor, Shimmer. The all women fed makes it's debut the day after Ring of Honor in the Chicago area on November 6 in Berwyn, Illinois. Dave's goal is to avoid the Divas angle so prevalent in wrestling today and instead promote women athletes. Dave said Shimmer will not be heavy on gimmicks but focus on the actual talent.

Asked why he ventured into the world of women's wrestling, Dave said, "I've always been a really big fan of women's wrestling." He can't understand why the athleticism of women in the business hasn't been promoted so far. He hopes to give women wrestlers the venue to work with and learn from each other by bringing them together in one forum. Dave said he could never see the logic is presenting models as wrestlers when there are trained women athletes out there.

He also said that women wrestlers don't progress to the next level because they all work the same few women over and over in the regions where they typically work. He promises to bring in a "variety of talent from around the country" each show. November 6 already has a selection of talent from around the U.S. and Canada including Daizee Haze, Sara Del Rey, Allison Danger, Cheerleader Melissa, Tiana Ringer, Krissy Vaine, Christie Ricci, Rain, Lacey, Mercedes Martinez, Beth Phoenix, MsChif, Shantelle Taylor, Amber O'Neal, Lexie Fyfe, Ariel, Cindy Rogers, and Nikki Roxx. Chris asked Dave why he selected the wrestlers he did and asked why he didn't use April Hunter or Gail Kim. He said it was because "none of them are costing me an arm and a leg."

The plan for each show is to have 18-20 women signed and two DVDs worth of matches to be taped and distributed by Ring of Honor. He hopes to eventually create tournament scenarios rather than have titles at this point, but the show will definitely be a "traditional" wrestling experience. The goal being that the winners make more money and there's prestige in main event status. He also hopes to create a continuous Shimmer DVD series by doing a show every month or so.

The hardcore legend Terry Funk joined Doc and Chris next and immediately squeezed in several plugs for his upcoming appearances including the November 5 Hardcore Homecoming show in Philadelphia. Terry is slated team up with Sabu and face Team 3-D (the Dudleys) that night.

Doc asked Terry about WrestleReunion in September where he turned heel against his friend, Mick Foley. Terry said, "It went extremely well" and added, "Who said he was my buddy anyhow?" joking that Mick was his "self-appointed" buddy.

During the last Hardcore Homecoming in June, Terry was also initially scheduled to appear in the Vince McMahon product, "One Night Stand," but cancelled. He didn't feel at that time doing two shows back to back would allow him to present the quality of match the fans deserve. He had a deal already with Hardcore Homecoming to make $7500 and when it came time to choose, he chose Hardcore Homecoming "for a reason" even though it was considerably less money than Vince was offering. He said, "I took the one that was near and dear to my heart."

The 61-year-old Terry laughed when the comment was made that he's "still so active" in the business. He said, "If you saw my last match.!" He later added, "It's hard for me to watch myself at this stage of my career. I like to presume that I'm doing well." He earlier alluded to his notorious retirement delay by saying, "I'm supposed to be getting out of the business."

Chris asked Terry if he'd accept an offer to become part of the WWE Hall of Fame. He didn't hesitate to say, "Absolutely." He said he would love to be honored by them but because he "always tells the truth," he's not always the favorite with Vince. The criticism isn't always nice, he said, but it's not always bad either. He thinks "the fans appreciate" his honesty, however.

Terry went on to talk about the ascent and decline of ECW and essentially pointed at Paul E. Dangerously. He said he is a "sharp guy" but "he made a lot of business mistakes." He said "ECW was Paul Heyman," but added that it was also the hard- working wrestlers that made ECW a success.

Talk turned to his relationship with the Insane Clown Posse. Terry said, "I just love the guys." But he added, "At the start I didn't love them." His first experience with Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J was when he watched the tape of the guys shooting on a match between Terry and Abdullah the Butcher. He made a point to say at that time, "You tell those guys that if I ever find them that I'm gonna kick the crap out of them." But eventually Sabu hooked Terry up with the ICP. They came to the ranch in Amarillo, Texas in their expensive tour bus and ate chili with Terry, and leaving several thousand dollars on the table for him when they left. Terry said, "That made me really friendly with them."

Terry also announced his retirement at the end of the year, but then took it back when he realized that he had one appearance after the new year. The shortest retirement ever! Right on our show!

Doc complimented Terry on his book, Terry Funk: More Than Just Hardcore. Terry said he appreciated Doc for "lying on the air." Asked about putting his ranch up for sale, Terry said the half section of land (one-half mile in each direction), is getting to be too much work. "It consumes a great deal of my time." Terry's book can be purchased on his Web site, www.terryfunk.net and for $20 + $5 for shipping, he will autograph the book.
