TNA's "Showtime" Eric Young talks to Wrestling Weekly February 23 about his training, working for TNA in Team Canada, and where he'd like to see his career take him:::
On Thursday, February 23, Wrestling Weekly with hosts Doc Young and Les Thatcher welcomed TNA star and the "tag team specialist" from Team Canada, "Showtime" Eric Young to the program.
Eric Young has made his indelible mark at TNA as part of Scott D'Amore's stable of Canadian wrestlers in Team Canada. A member of Team Canada from its inception, Eric often pairs up with Bobby Roode or Petey Williams to become a powerful force in TNA's competitive tag team division. In 2004 alone, Eric was able to capture the NWA World Tag Team Title on two occasions. Eric, along with Roode, Petey Williams, Johnny Devine, A1 and Coach D'Amore, make up one of the biggest teams in wrestling today.
Les opened the interview by asking Eric about his training background in Ontario, Canada with the legendary Waldo Von Erich. Eric, an active wrestler for eight years now, talked about training with Waldo but also Carl LeDuc at the same facility before moving on and according to Eric, "wrestled in every province in Canada." That is before TNA came calling and he had the opportunity to work with his good friends in Team Canada.
Eric talked about his "nervous paranoid" character at TNA that was developed with the help of Dutch Mantell, Scott D'Amore and Terry Taylor. The character was described to him as someone who hears voices, back pedaled and ran, and was just generally scared and paranoid and he "ran with it" to great success with the fans of TNA.
Eric described never working for WWE officially but participating in dark matches on occasion. He is secure in his position at TNA at the moment and happy to be a tag worker after years of singles action in the independents. He is glad that unlike the WWE, TNA concentrates heavily on promoting tag teams but said, "they could even concentrate on them more" because there are so many good tag teams working for TNA now. He said he has no complaints and is not necessarily anxious to get back to being a single wrestler because he is now working with his "best friends in the business." His only regret is there aren't more of his friends from Ontario working with him.
When he was asked about Sting's return to wrestling, he said he thinks it's exciting because Sting was one of his favorites from early on. Eric also said other than his regular gig at TNA, he is willing to work anywhere but since he currently resides in Nashville, there aren't very many good promotions to work for in that area. Eric said he would love to someday work with Samoa Joe. He says their styles are so different that he thinks it would be great experience. He's worked in Puerto Rico in the past but would also love to someday work in the U.K. or Japan.
Next week on Thursday, March 2 Doc Young will joined by a special guest co-host TBA. Wrestling Weekly can be heard every Thursday from 8:00-10:00 pm EST at www.wrestlingweekly.com.
