Pro's from the Palace (#103) - ECW Picks & the Quest continues with RVD

I have a lot to talk about, and I am working with a handicap tonight, so let's get down to business, ladies and gentlemen.

First, my picks for the six matches at ECW One Night Stand this sunday night, June 11th.

SUPER CRAZY & TAJIRI vs. THE FBI of LITTLE GUIDO & TONY MAMALUKE

Question. Is Little Guido officially a two brand wrestler, as Nunzio on Smackdown, and as Guido on ECW? Or is he eventually going to tell Smackdown what to do with itself because on ECW, Guido has a shot to be a main eventer pretty damn quickly. A question to ponder, ladies and gentlemen. The second question is, Where is Psicosis for this match? Psicosis is teaming with Crazy all year in WWE as the Mexicools, but now, when the chances are there to go back home, Crazy goes with the Japanese Buzzsaw, who couldn't resist the opportunity to return to the US to compete under the ECW flag again. This is an excellent tag match with four men who can absolutely go at 1,000 miles per hour, and I would expect nothing less from any of them. I would give the slight advantage to Crazy & Tajiri for one reason. I would believe it would be foolish not to try and give Tajiri all he wants so he signs an ECW contract and sticks around to bolster the talent roster. A win in this contest may be the straw that stirs the drink to keep the Buzzsaw on US Soil. It's a theory.

WINNERS: Tajiri & Super Crazy

KURT ANGLE vs. RANDY ORTON

Angle joining ECW doesn't bother me one bit. Orton coming to Raw and attacking Angle the way he did doesn't bother me either. It's the right way for Orton to blow the suspension in to the storyline, and it's the right way to get him back in to the mix. I don't like this match in this setting. Orton is the WWE's prize possession now, who eventually may be the light to guide the Smackdown brand back to prominence, since it has been decimated by injury and other elements. Yeah, I know Orton is on Raw, but you would have to believe that Smackdown is going to be replenished with some name talents, and I would not be surprised to see Orton rejump and try and take over the blue and white as his own brand, and also as a way to stick it to Kurt Angle. Anyway, this match is not the reason for the ECW brand, as there should be some newer combinations, and this type of match should be flown under the WWE colors, and not here. As good as its probably going to be, and I would think it would be very good, it needs to be in a WWE style environment.

Just my thoughts.

WINNER: Kurt Angle

Angle is going to be given EVERY opportunity to succeed in ECW. He will be ECW's poster boy. A loss here will not be tolerable for the face of the New Breed Unleashed.

MICK FOLEY & EDGE vs. TERRY FUNK & TOMMY DREAMER

Take out the obvious that two men here need to be retired and stay retired. Take out the obvious that Edge is hurting badly after his match with Dreamer this past Wednesday night. Take out the obvious that Foley is working a role that, until wednesday, he was floundering in, and you have the cauldron for a match that I couldn't pick if I had an abacus. All I do know is that these four men will absolutely put their bodies through hell and back, and then some before a winner is finally declared. I'm not sure who is better suited with a win here, who gets the better push, but I would believe that the ECW contingent will figure out a way to take this one, with potentially a Mick Foley defection in the works. I can't see him with Edge long term. This could be the way to turn things around.

WINNERS: Terry Funk & Tommy Dreamer

TAZZ vs. JERRY LAWLER

This one is going to be the sleeper of the show. There is genuine hatred between these two men. The first couple of shots wednesday night were stiff and real. I could tell, even after reading about it on the web. There is going to be a lot of sick suplex spots on this one, and I would not be surprised one bit to see one, if not both, significantly bloody before the night is out. Out of the both of them, I gotta pick the local boy for the win.

WINNER: Tazz

World Heavyweight Championship
REY MYSTERIO vs. SABU

Dory Funk, Jr. must be cringing at the thought that Sabu could win WWE gold tonight, especially after what happened to him a while back with his match against the maniac at the Funking Conservatory. Truth be told, I think Sabu does win this match. Whether it be "clean", in ECW standards, or a little controversial, I would think the World Heavyweight title is going to be folded in to the ECW brand in one way, shape, or form. Either Sabu is going to end Rey's hell week (Angle, RVD, Finlay and now Sabu) with a loss, or Rey is gonna defect to ECW, regardless of what he said this past friday night. Personally, I think the latter. ECW needs a title, and this is the more likely of the two that is going to change hands.

WINNER: Sabu

WWE Championship
JOHN CENA vs. ROB VAN DAM

I like both competitors. Both men can bring it. Both men can get hardcore in a degree that is unique to their abilities. But, let's call it down the middle. Van Dam can't do the mike thing to save his life, and you need to be an orator of legendary capabilities to be WWE Champion. Regardless of what you may think about RVD being the best "wrestler never to win WWE world gold," this is not going to be the time for him to do it. I have an idea of when Cena is going to lose the title, and unfortunately for the ECW faithful, this is not going to be it. I do fear for Cena, though, because I am fearful that the New York crowd is going to boo his ass right out of the five boroughs, and I hope and pray for all parties involved that it does not get ultra ugly.

WINNER: John Cena

6 matches. No Sandman. No Balls Mahoney. No Axl Rotten. If Axl blew his chance at this opportunity by no showing in Dayton, Ohio, he has nobody to blame but himself. I hope that WWE/ECW puts some more matches on the card, because these six, although good, cannot hold a flame to the card last year. There's a rumour of a match between Masato Tanaka and Balls Mahoney. If that goes down, I'll give the win to Tanaka, off his performance last year, I think he has more of the talent to beat Mahoney, although if Mahoney hits him square with one of those "This is gonna hurt" chairs, I would laugh my cracker butt off.

Ok, other items to address.

I picked up the Boogeyman Jakks Pacific action figure from Ruthless Aggression 20. Anyone who is a collector needs this guy. The gimmick may be ridiculous, but the figure is absolutely tremendous.

I am checking out the Dusty Rhodes DVD. For what I can see, it's a tremendous package. Ric Flair should be jealous, because I think there's more content packed in to the Rhodes package than there is in the Flair package. It may be a good comparison to check out in the future, since I have both.

I also picked up "Hardcore Homecoming, November Reign". Am I nuts, or didn't Funk & Sabu meet Team 3D in this card? I thought so, but it's not on the DVD. I watched Taipei Death Match 2 between Ian and Axl. Wow. That's all I can say, plain and simple is, wow.

THE QUEST CONTINUES
A meeting with Mr. Money in the Bank, Rob Van Dam & Smackdown Diva Jillian Hall

I was back in the Sunrise Mall this past saturday, Intercontinental title in hand, as the challenger for the WWE title, and JBL's former manager came in for an autograph signing. I had met RVD back in the day, almost two years ago, where he signed my WCW big gold, and he looked damn good. Gotta give major props to Jillian as well, well, truth be told, I didn't expect her to be tremendously attractive, from her pics on television, but damn, she looked fine. I know my wife will kill me, but she did, she looked really fine. Tremendous blue eyes.

Anyway, we were in a new locale in the mall due to circumstances, so RVD and Jillian were able to come in through the bowels and surprise the populus who were in attendance. Even Van Dam himself said "Wake up, people!" when he entered the signing area. He caught my crew off guard, I don't think he caught my wife off guard though, but we won't go there, ladies and gentlemen. Oops, I just did.

Back on track, we approached, and of course, they were cordial, pleasant, and smiling. It's not much to ask, but it was a pleasant encounter with both Ms. Hall and the ECW superstar. RVD signed my IC title with the tag, "5 star", using the picture of a star instead of the word, which is absolutely killer, and just adds to the value of my belt. I was thrilled. So damn thrilled I goofed and said, "good luck tonight", meaning tomorrow night. What can I say, even after all these times, I'm still flustered meeting stars of the WWE.

Thanks as always to Alex, Mike, and the rest of the boys from New York Sports Works. Special hello goes out to their webmistress, Erin, who I had the pleasure of speaking with briefly. Thanks so much for making my family welcome at these chaotic events. Anyone in the Long Island area who has contacted me in the past about "issues" that you may have had with these signings should give these guys another chance. I can tell you from first hand observation, the experience is a pleasant, enjoyable, and orderly time for all parties involved.

Da Champ, John Cena, and the Long Island Smackdowner, Ashley, come back to the Mall on June 23rd. I will be there, in attendance. It's a tradition I can't stop yet. I gotta have my semi-annual meetin' with da champ. Also coming is newcomer and new US champion Bobby Lashley, along with Torrie Wilson on July 7th. Check out the website at NewYorkSportsWorksInc.com for more information.

If you come to the show in a couple of weeks, double check as to where the locale may be, as its possible they may need to use the new one.

That's it for now, ladies and gentlemen. Except for one final thought. I am very, very, very high on the US Champion, Bobby Lashley. I think his "style" is just what WWE programming needs, and I hope that he has a very long run as champion, and takes it to the next level, and hopefully walk away with world title gold in the distant future.
