Pro's from the Palace (#104) - 1 man's view on the WWE Title post ECW
On Monday, June 12, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST Anybody who is an avid reader of my columns is probably, if they are thinking about the business from last night's pay per view, is probably asking themselves what's my opinion of the deal that happened in the WWE title match.
Ok, so maybe I'm not that important, but most of you realize how big a Cena fan I am, and I thought it would be good to put my thoughts out there on the match, and the subsequent fall out from it.
Before anyone else yells, I DID NOT SEE THE MATCH. I will, however, purchase the DVD when it comes out, so I WILL see the match, but this is more an aftershock piece than an actual match review.
Am I upset by RVD winning the title? No. RVD is a world class athlete who could run with a championship if given the opportunity, as previously shown by his six Intercontinental championships. Do I believe Van Dam can be a "promoter" that is needed to be as a World Champion? I am not so sure. But, here's the real obstacle for me.
Van Dam won his first WWE title, and yes, let's call it the WWE title, because this ECW brand is just an "umbrellaed" version of WWE, while fighting for a "company" where he was the main draw, the top dog, the "whole f'n show" if you will. He did, back in the Alliance days, get some shots at the title, and did not deliver, for whatever reason, but it took the swerve of winning money in the bank, and then taking it to the "extreme" if you will to get him the top prize in the WWE.
It just seems a little tainted to me, that's all.
I give Van Dam all the credit in the world for being the athlete he is, and for winning the match, because truth be told, I would've expected a riot in the Hammerstein Ballroom had that not occurred. I give Cena a lot of credit for going in to that match, and stepping up his "heel" turn by sticking it in the face of the referee, and Van Dam as well, ala steel steps to the chops.
I just would have liked to have seen Van Dam win the title more cleanly, and not with the assistance of Edge, and not with the umbrella of ECW protecting him.
Now, what does this do for Raw? Jeez, who knows. I had a friend, and forgive my lack of brain power, I forgot whom, but I had a friend who suggested regionalizing the titles on both Raw and Smackdown, one world champion and one world tag champion for both Raw and Smackdown, and having the IC and Women's remain on Raw, and the US and cruiser remain on Smackdown. Personally, I think that would be tremendous. With all this brand jumping that's been going on, and a lack of a draft lottery, it would open up the brands for some nice interpromotional contests, and some unique matchups for world championships that WWE has not seen in some time.
Do you know what my response was to this suggestion?
It's terrific, but it will never happen because WWE is not that creative.
I would suspect that the classic WWE title will be brought back to Raw, the ECW titles, or new designs will come in as ECW championships come tuesday, and we're going to have some ridiculous tournament for two weeks leading to Vengenance where the winner of the tournament will face Edge to determine the new Raw champion.
Yawn.
What do I think happens to John Cena now? He goes full blown "FTW" mode, ala Tazz. He goes ape sh*t on Edge, and anybody else who steps in his face about being the biggest goat in WWE history, losing the WWE title to a smaller brand in their own house. Personally, I can't wait to see it. I think we've been seeing sprinkles of it before, and I can't wait to see it go full blown tonight. I would expect John Cena to take his game to a level nobody else has ever seen, and maybe, JUST MAYBE, now that he is the hunter instead of the hunted, the fans will decide whether to boo him or to cheer him.
You all know where I stand.
Quick last point, someone wanna make sure the mute button is ready to go tonight when Jerry Lawler, who was a prince when I met him, but he is going to sour and whine like a little b*tch tonight throughout the show after Styles and Tazz embarassed him last night. Personally, I think it's great. But, listening to Lawler cry will make me want to throw up.
Ok, i'm gone. Short one this time. Hope it was fun.

UPDATE
Minutes after I published this, I read an article on WWE.com talking about whether or not RVD won the title because of Heyman counting him down, and two referees being knocked out. I know the finish was lousy, but, even as a Cena fan, I have to protest. If they're going to turn around and reverse this, the one thing that it will do is make the two brands hate each other even more which would make for terrific television, but Van Dam will be screwed once again, and truth be told, I would feel sorry for him in the utmost fashion. Nobody needs to have that happen to them like this so many times, and this one would be a travesty of epic proportions.
Remember, people, it's just one man's opinion.
