Backstage notes regarding ECW's second week, venues, and new talent
On Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 11:36 PM EST Those involved with the ECW brand within WWE have described the show as a "work in progress", although the general feeling was that last night's show was much better than the debut two weeks ago on Sci Fi.
It is still being recognized that they still have a long ways to go in regards to getting viewers emotionally interested in the product and invested in characters. Although many would like to see the ECW brand tape separately from SmackDown so it they can run smaller venues to give it a more "ECW feel", this is the plan for now and they will be test running separate tapings in July and August.
The feeling right now with those involved with the product is that they can't rely on the older ECW stars and instead need to blend the familiar stars with newer talent. It is no secret that one of the major things discussed when the brand was given the green light to return was that new talent not yet called up to RAW and SmackDown would be given a chance to get a push on TV with the new ECW brand. It should also be noted that NBC Universal would like to see angles on Monday Night RAW build for ECW on Tuesday on Sci Fi. So, for those expecting bigger WWE names to go away and no longer appear on ECW programming after the Vengeance PPV won't be seeing that happen as completely separate brands with no cross-promotion isn't in the plans.
