Jonny Fairplay Interview: Talks about early manager career & TNA deal
On Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 3:45 AM EST The following was transcribed by Victoria Lee of www.wrestlingweekly.com:
Last Tuesday, Wrestling Weekly, featuring Doc Young and Les Thatcher, welcomed Jonny Fairplay as their live guest. Yes, the most hated reality star, Survivor's Jonny "don't spell my name with an 'H'" Fairplay. But Jonny does wrestling, too!
Also, Bryan Alvarez from the Figure Four Wrestling Newsletter joined the program for the "Hot Topic" segment, discussing SNME and other week's news.
Les Thatcher also talked a lot bringing wrestlers more admiration by spotlighting their hobbies, which would in turn cause more fans to relate to them. Good topic.

Jonny Fairplay got his start in wrestling as a manager in Charlotte's New Dimension Wrestling in 1998. At the time, such wrestlers as The Hardy Boyz, Axl Rotten, and Gregory Helms were also working for the promotion. Jonny managed Bo Dupp in the federation.
Jonny was asked if it was true that he found Mike "The Miz" Mizanin to be annoying. Jonny doesn't. He said that they're both wild partiers, and when they get together, it's too much for most people. But Jonny, for one, doesn't find The Miz annoying. Jonny added that The Miz is "the perfect heel."
Jonny bragged about his contract with TNA back in the day, when he made $300,000 for 8 appearances. Jonny felt that it was a bargain for TNA, because of how much promotion he could do for the company. He explained that every week, TNA's promotional department calls around to different radio stations to try and book wrestlers for interviews. They'd have a hard time, because these radio stations didn't know who Jeff Jarrett, AJ Styles, or other TNA wrestlers were. But people knew who Jonny Fairplay was. Most of the time, all the interviewers would want to talk about was Survivor; but Johnny can control any interview, so he would turn the discussion to TNA.
It was Dixie Carter who hired Jonny, not Jeff Jarrett. Jonny has heard the reason he - according to him - wasn't booked properly in TNA was because Jarrett had never seen Survivor and didn't know how to book him. Jonny also heard that Jarrett didn't want anybody to steal his heat. Jonny thinks that these theories are true.
Jonny was asked about his current status in wrestling. His contract with TNA has expired, and he is looking elsewhere. He met with WWE about three weeks ago, and talked about what he'd like to do in WWE. He would like to manage The Miz, but with Miz tied up in the Diva Search, Jonny thinks the best place for him would be ECW. If he did join ECW, Jonny would like to be a manager, and host a Piper's Pit-like talk show.
Jonny's also in talks with MavTV about possible projects there. Jonny noted that the station, based out of Los Angeles, is available on Verizon and Charter, and recently struck a European deal. The idea right now is that if Fairplay did sign with the station, that he would become "the face of MavTV", host his own reality show, and even work with TNT Pro Wrestling when it premiers on the network this fall.
The next question came from the chat room, and was brought to you by Wrestling Weekly's own Saturday columnist - and the gal who brings you this recap - "The Mat Cat" Victoria Lee. I asked him if, aside from The Miz, he thought any of his reality co-stars would make good wrestlers. Jonny told of a storyline he had wanted to run with in TNA, where he would fight a different reality star every week, eventually losing to Rupert Boneham from Survivor. Rupert wasn't interested, though, so another idea was brought up: Jonny would instead lose to Charla Faddoul, the midget from Amazing Race. TNA didn't go for that idea, though. They didn't think anybody would know who she was. Jonny found that funny, as Charla was offered a guest spot on the #1 show on television that week.
RhodeIslandRed asked Jonny what it was like when "Rowdy" Roddy Piper blasted him with a fire extinguisher. Jonny said that there are two different kinds of fire extinguishers they can use: one with chemicals, and one without. Roddy used one with chemicals. Jonny doesn't understand why wrestlers insist on using real weapons. He brought up when wrestlers used thumb tacks. Jonny thinks that a bag of thumb tacks should be at least 80% fake, but that thought is never well-received by wrestlers.
Last but not least, Jonny discussed his TV appearances after Survivor. Jonny was under contract with CBS for one year after Survivor ended, and had to get their permission before appearing on any other TV shows. CBS allowed him to work TNA shows, because TNA was only on PPV back then. CBS was unhappy with Fairplay working with TNA when TNA moved to FSN, but they couldn't do anything about it, because they had already given him permission to work there. Jonny also appeared on Survivor All-Stars: America's Tribal Council, where he won Best Fight and Biggest Villain. The special aired against the series finale of Frasier. Jonny said that America's Tribal Council beat out Frasier 30,000,000 to 20,000,000. Jonny promoted TNA's FSN debut on the special, which Jonny said would have cost TNA something in the ballpark of $5,000,000 if TNA had bought advertisement themselves on the show. Jonny was resentful that he gave TNA such a big plug, and wasn't used on their TV debut.
Jonny discusses all this, much more, and a story involving a Shark Boy mask you MUST hear! To listen to the show, please go to www.wrestlingweekly.com.
