ECW @ Spartanburg, SC Memorial Auditorium
September 2, 2006
The auditorium holds roughly one to two thousand. There were a few open areas in the balcony but everything else was full. Definitely one of the hottest crowds I’ve seen. They popped for everything, were vocal for the guys they loved and were vocal for the guys they hated. There was no in-between. And all the classic chants were represented.
Al Snow pinned Rene Dupree after hitting him with Head
Kevin Thorn (w/ Ariel) pinned Balls Mahoney (w/ Francine) with the crucifix powerbomb as Balls stood on the middle rope watching the catfight on the floor
Prior to the bout, Balls came out and said since Ariel cost him a match recently on ECW TV, he went out and found someone to watch his back – Francine. After the bout, Francine received a "She’s hardcore" chant.
Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke defeated Derrick Neikirk & Ryan O’Reilly when Guido scored the pin following the Sicilian Slice as one of the opponents attempted to piledrive Mamaluke
Really fun little match but it took a while for the crowd to give Neikirk & O’Reilly a break. There were many chants of "You can’t wrestle," "Who are you?" and "Where’d you come from?" Guido & Mamaluke played bump machines for much of the bout.
Christopher W. Anderson pinned Stevie Richards with a spinebuster
Richards received thunderous chants of "bWo" but Anderson had many supporters as well.
Tommy Dreamer & the Sandman defeated Mike Knox (w/ Kelly Kelly) & Test in an extreme rules match
I never was able to see the Sandman entrance at the ECW Arena but seeing him appear in the crowd, walk to every corner of the audience, and bust three or four beer cans over his head was definitely an experience I’ll never forget. The crowd ate up every second. Dreamer cut an in-ring promo before the match putting over the history of the arena, all the names that frequented it like Flair, Blanchard, Anderson, and Dusty, and said when ECW started coming through the Carolinas in 97-98 Spartanburg was a hot area for them too. He said when they were planning the summer tour, he begged for a stop in Spartanburg because he knew how rabid the fans were. Really fun match full of "Holy shit" bumps and chants of "You took steroids" (directed at Test, to which he responded "So?") and "Fuck him up Sandman, fuck him up!" Dreamer ended up pinning Knox with the DDT immediately after Sandman dropped Test with the White Russian legsweep. After the bout, Sandman left through the crowd while Dreamer soaked up the applause from the fans, a chant of "Thank you, Tommy" and then signed an autograph for a young girl a few seats down from me before slapping hands around ringside.
Intermission. Right before the show continued, Kelly Kelly came out and briefly danced before Mike Knox, in nothing but a towel, came out, covered her up, and took her backstage.
CM Punk defeated Shannon Moore via submission with the Anaconda Vice after an enzuiguri and urinage
Punk was super over with the crowd but even Moore received a few chants of "Reject." In a very short period of time, the fans have made Punk a star and that was very evident here. He wasn’t receiving RVD-type pops but he wasn’t too far off either.
Rob Van Dam pinned Hardcore Holly with a sunset flip after reversing an attempt at the Alabama Slam
RVD was the most over guy on the show. His offense was dead on, no missteps or hesitations that I saw. He hit a nice spinning legdrop from the apron onto the retaining barrier that received a "Holy shit" chant.
ECW World Champion the Big Show (w/ Paul Heyman) pinned Sabu in an extreme rules match following a chokeslam through a table set up inside the ring
Heyman came out before the match and said stopping in the Carolinas was never in his vision of ECW. He then put over the champion before introducing him. Sabu was also dead on with his offense. No blown spots tonight. Show dominated much of the bout and took breaks to respond to the crowds chants of "You can’t wrestle." How did the champ reply? In the same clap-clap-clap clap clap tone, "I don’t have to." Late in the bout, Holly returned and attacked the challenger, with RVD then making the save. As RVD and Holly took their battle to the floor, Sabu set up a chair in the ring, ran off the ropes, jumped off the chair, and was caught with a chokeslam for the 1-2-3. Sabu received a strong ovation after the match.
Really fun show. Was it the best card aesthetically? No. But the crowd was super hot from bell to bell. They either loved you or hated you but you knew one way or the other. If I could catch a show like this on a regular basis, with front row tickets no more than $35, I would be there every time.
