Pro's from the Palace (#133) - Thoughts & stuff from WWE and ROH

Time for what appears to have become a weekly feature from the Palace. I get the chance to watch Smackdown from bell to bell, thanks to my wife for that luxury, and you get the opinions, from word to word. Let's get to work.

In a word, Impressive. For the first time in a long time, we have an impressive promo, a legitimate promo, that shows that the WWE brass is listening to the internet, and listening to guys like myself and my colleagues here. Cena comes in to the Animal's locker room, tries to show respect for the Animal, Batista balks at it, saying, "You're John Cena, the Doctor of yadda yadda yadda..." and Cena then railroads Batista, claiming he's been "sandbaggin' it" since he returned, and he "lost his fire". I'm not trying to toot my horn, by any stretch of the imagination, but there is no way that you can deny that WWE is not looking at sites such as this one on a semi-regular basis.

Was that an attempt to pacify the hardcore fans? Who knows. One thing is for certain. It's intensity like that that will keep me a Cena backer. It's intensity like that that will eventually turn me in the favor of Batista. It's definitely a step in the right direction for all parties involved.

Undertaker & Kane reunite as a tag team next week on Smackdown. How good is this. I feel bad for Mr. Kennedy, because I love his character, and his talent is remarkable, but MVP, this punk needs to get his ass kicked, and I can't wait to see how the Taker & Kane, the Brothers of Destruction, wreak havoc on this wet-behind-the-ears rookie.

Chavo Guerrero needs to make this whole Eddie-laced storyline go away. It really does make me feel uncomfortable. Brining Chris Benoit in to the fold in place of the recovering Rey Mysterio is just going to keep this angle going, and keep the tenuous feeling in the pit of most fans stomachs. Seeing Mysterio say "I Quit" repeatedly, yeah, it helps for the heel heat, but come on, there's only so much of the uneasiness that can be endured by fans and viewers of WWE.

I feel so badly for Bobby Lashley. What has he done to WWE to have him be relinquished to squash duty in the match with Tatanka against Regal & Taylor. And what else has he done to WWE that is resulting in creative forcing him in to a program with a geniune full blooded midcarder as Tatanka. Lashley was a former US Champion, and a top contender for the World title mere weeks ago, and now he appears to have been de-pushed. I, for one, would like to know why.

I feel badly for Dave Taylor. It seemed like his injury was a fluke. He finished the match without missing a beat, and even Cole & JBL didn't notice or didn't care to illustrate how Taylor was limping to the back, but I feel bad. It appeared like Taylor was getting the chance to do what he does best on the main stage, and it looks like, it appeaes to be that his dream may be over before it gets out of the starting gate.

No Burke. No Terkay. No Finlay. 3 men that had been regular staples on Smackdown broadcasts. Now, they take a back seat to Kristal and Miz babbling for twenty minutes, and Boogeyman sticking worms down Kristal's throat. Don't get me wrong, Kristal is hot, and I actually think the Boogeyman gimmick is wearing on me, but they're losing talented individuals in the process of trying to write this show in lieu of segments that I don't honestly think the public could give damn one about.

I like the matchup of Matt Hardy vs. Gregory Helms. But, let's figure out a way to spice this feud up a little. Title anyone?

Some other thoughts to go over with you all. First, on the DVD front...

Picked up two WWE PPVs... Unforgiven 06, and the Bash 06. Yep, I admit it, Mr. Gimmick Match is here. I bought Unforgiven for HIAC and TLC for the WWE title, and I bought the Bash for the Prison match. When you know you're not going to see those types of matches on a day in day out basis, you tend to think it may not be a bad idea to put them in your collection. The Prison match was interesting to watch. A little confusing, but interesting. HiaC was down right intense. Some of those shots looked either really brutal or really bad. H did a knee drop on Vince that was God awful, and it was right on camera. I kind of understand why Cena was upset after TLC. That fall from Edge on the FU from the ladder did not look very pretty.

I also, a little later than expected, but I picked up ROH's latest Long Island show, "Time to Man Up". I was disappointed that the promo after the Joe/AJ main event was cut out, as well as the run in made by KENTA after the Danielson opening contest. I know you need your backstage promos and your video recap, but I thought those segments of the show were compelling, and should have been allowed. I also need to say that ROH's sound on their DVDs is God awful. It had been good in the past, and I have discs up to Era of Honor Begins. But, How We Roll and TTMU, the two most recent, damn, the audio for both is just awful. Not saying the broadcast is much better, but the quality of audio is just atrocious.

Here's a question. It's gonna sound wise-crackerish, but I need to ask it. Think about, for the moment, the full time competitors in ROH that are signed to TNA. Let's go over them. Samoa Joe, Homicide, Austin Aries, Christopher Daniels, can we come up with any more names of full time, FULL TIME ROH guys also in TNA? Ok.. if you can, let me know. Some part timers in ROH that are TNA contracted. Alex Shelley, Jay Lethal, etc. Now, most of these full timers, Aries, Joe, Daniels, and Homicide have made the attempt to keep their bookings in both companies, showing loyalty to the place that has made them household names. Now, here's my question. Outside of the financial aspect of it, which I know is legit, but let's just take that out of the equation for a minute...

Why can't AJ Styles do that?

AJ, one of the founding fathers of ROH, does not take a full time sked in the company, he comes in periodically. Why is it necessary for Styles to step back from ROH, a promotion he put on the map along with others, and in the interim, focus on the payday of TNA, and God knows where else he may be competing. Is TNA becoming that insecure with its top talents that it's influencing guys like Styles or Kurt Angle, for that matter, to not take indy bookings? I find it kind of distressing that ROH has had to say goodbye to people like Shelley, like Abyss, like Lethal, and now like Styles, and it's pretty obvious that TNA has a serious hand in their decisions. Is ROH going to be as big as TNA? It could, but its a long way off. I know the money is the money, I guess I am questioning the loyalty of some of these performers to a company that gave them the stepping stone to superstardom.

That may not have made much sense, so let me stop for now. Till next time, I remain humbly, your older palace dweller...
