Bryan Danielson Interview: Talks about ROH's growth and WWE rumors
» Reported by Adam Martin of WrestleView.com
» On Sunday, October 29, 2006 at 4:59 PM EST

Monday Night Mayhem sent in the following recap:

Current Ring Of Honor World Heavyweight Champion, "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, was the special guest on this past week's (10/23/06) live edition of Monday Night Mayhem with The Big Mosh & Blade, which can be heard in streaming audio every week (and live from 9-11PM ET every Monday night) exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (www.MondayNightMayhem.com, www.ObsessedWithWrestling.com, www.Dory-Funk.com, www.AllWNYRadio.com & www.AudioWrestling.com - your official home of "The Spring Break Incident" Video-On-Demand, featuring former WWE Diva, Stacy Keibler).
The interview with "The American Dragon" is now available to hear for FREE in Real Audio!

Here are some of the highlights from the interview, provided by The Mayhem's co-host, John "The Big Mosh" Masiulionis:

The Big Mosh & Blade welcomed Bryan Danielson to the program, as he was gearing up for this past weekend's ROH shows (which you can check out all of the results of at www.ROHWrestling.com) including his No-DQ Match against "The Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe. An interesting question to say the least to start off the interview, as The Mayhem is every once in a while, accused of always "asking the softball" questions & kissing up to the guests. So, Mosh asked Danielson what was the time in his career when someone kissed his ass the most. Bryan does not remember a single instance in particular, but reminisced on an experience at the New Japan Dojo in Los Angeles, CA -- where some of the fellow students believed that by buddying-up to him, they would have a better shot. He did wish to go on record by saying that he is going to have to keep an accurate record of this sort of thing into the future.

Bryan has been thoroughly impressed with the growth of Ring Of Honor in the past few years, agreeing with Mosh & Blade how both the WWE & TNA are taking notice of all ROH events. As the champion, he is most appreciative of the large crowds that have come to see the shows, based only on the power of the internet. For not having a regular television deal, it is difficult for most casual fans to know about or follow Ring Of Honor. But, even a good number of those followers have now started to find out about the company. He loved the crowds in England for their recent shows there, as well as how hot the crowds in NYC & Chicago always are. Being a part of the company since Day One, he feels these are just some of the many accomplishments for ROH.

Blade asked Bryan how integral it is for the future of ROH to bring in more stars of name-caliber stars, just like they have done in the past -- such as Jeff Hardy, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Mick Foley, & the current Ring Of Honor commissioner, Jim Cornette. Danielson fired right back, as he strongly believes it is very vital to bring in such individuals to broaden the ROH fan base. For instance, he would love to bring in The Honky Tonk Man for a future event if he make that sort of a decision. On the heels of this, he was also taken aback by the response that Lance Storm coming to ROH had over WrestleMania weekend back in April of this year. Storm stayed and watched the entire event, besides competing in his match against Danielson. This, combined with Ring Of Honor's current talent base, will get the company to continue making strides in the right direction.

The question that has been asked by many wrestling fans throughout the world is whether or not Danielson will be signing with the WWE anytime soon, and join his former ROH colleague, CM Punk, "up north." The voice of Monday Night RAW, Jim Ross, has even mentioned Danielson's work in his BBQ sauce blog. With all of the rumors circulating, Mosh asked Bryan point blank if he would see himself as a good fit in World Wrestling Entertainment, and which brand (RAW, SmackDown, or ECW) be the perfect fit for him. Danielson feels happy right now being an indy worker, especially since he is also going to school right now as it is full-time. He does see himself in the "E" someday, but for different reasons than most -- which do include financial security and being able to tour the world. SmackDown, he feels, would be the place for him, since it already features several of his former competitors & friends in ROH (Paul London, Brian Kendrick, & Jamie Noble), as well as William Regal, one of his trainers.

In addition to Bryan being trained by Regal, most people know that Bryan was also trained by one-half of DX, the legendary Shawn Michaels. Does he ever get tired of individuals thinking that all he needs to do to get into the WWE is make that one phone call? He said that is to be expected, with the connection between the two -- but, believe it or not, he gets more references now to Regal than he does HBK. Some out there have even forgotten about him being trained by Shawn. Bryan has not spoken to "The Showstopper" in well over a year, since the last time he was backstage at a WWE event. At one point, Shawn did tell Bryan if he did want a job in the company, all he had to do was ask him. However, he would rather be approached by World Wrestling Entertainment to come in, and have a solid storyline for him in the process, versus not being used at all.

Mosh asked Danielson about the likelihood of ROH bringing in Kurt Angle and having what many in the wrestling community would call a "dream match." Bryan does believe though, that as of right now, the chances of that happening are "pretty slim." He would be thrilled if Angle would come into the company, but it is all up to his schedule with TNA and whether or not he spends any time in MMA.

Bryan was very candid about his feelings on CM Punk's work in the WWE/ECW, as well as "The Samoan Submission Machine," Samoa Joe & his progression in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. These comments along make this one of the "most real" interviews you will listen to this year. You will hear why Danielson credits both Joe & Punk both for keeping Ring Of Honor alive during their problems back a few years ago, and so much more!

More goodness is included in this almost-40-minute interview with the ROH Champ, including his take on the likelihood of any future problems between ROH & TNA down the road with having talent be "exclusive" to one vs. the other, the real reason as to why Bryan decided to pick out his current music ("The Final Countdown") as his ROH entrance theme, the weirdest moment he ever witnessed at a professional wrestling event, & why he will never have a cardboard cutout of "The Heartbreak Kid" ever again. And will be see "The American Dragon" in a six-sided ring anytime soon? As we have said beforehand, you must tune in to find out your answers!
