WWE Raw & ECW House Show Results - 11/8/06
Location: Glasgow, Scotland

Dave Tennant sent in the following report:

So we descended on a just shy of jam-packed Braehead Arena in Renfrew (just outside Glasgow) Scotland to see the WWE's latest house show offering. Tonight promised an extravaganza of RAW & ECW talent that was too hard for us to resist travelling to.

The show opened up in good time with Lilian Garcia coming out to sing, as is traditional, Flower of Scotland. The crowd wasn't quite as into the moment as I have known them to be at these events, but Lilian did the song proud nonetheless.

>From there, after being defeaned by opening pyro, we moved into our opening contest of the night:

Carlito vs Shelton Benjamin

It was a solid match to start the show off, the former Momma's Boy working over the arm and shoulder of the Sideshow Bob lookalike. However it proved in vain as the end saw the massively over Carlito crack Shelton's back and pick up the 1-2-3.

Then we moved onto match #2:

Victoria vs Mickie James

This was a good battle of the 2 best women's wrestlers in WWE at the present time. Victoria dominated for long periods of the match but again, the fan favourite came out victorious as Mickie planted her adversary, or should I say, implanted her adversary with a tremendous DDT to score the pin, after Lita tried to interfere to her detriment and failed to make a difference.

Things then took on a somewhat different tack as ECW entered the fray:

Rene Dupree vs Tommy Dreamer

Dupree got on the microphone pre-match to put himself over as the most extreme athlete in ECW history. However the modern day Rick Martel was put in his place by Dreamer, calling him the biggest French Wanker he'd ever seen. (One of the highlights of the night for the Scottish crowd)

A physical battle ensued that spilled to the outside and when it went back in the ring, Dreamer caught Dupree with a DDT to win yet another one for the guys in white hats.

Next up was our first tag match of the evening:

Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs Cryme Tyme

Cryme Tyme made short and sweet work of the sweet & sour southern gentlemen to pick up yet another win for the good guys in a fairly formulaic match dominated by comedy spots.

At this point, things changed in pace as we settled into a Divas Best Body contest

Maria, Torrie Wilson and last but not least Candice Michelle all came down to the ring but we were granted a surprise as ECW's Ariel, along with Kevin Thorn, made their way to the arena floor.

Ariel then proceeded to enter herself into the contest, treating us to one of her trademark floor shows. The rest of the girls then showed their wares to the crowd and they elected Torrie (who'd been at a signing at a store in the centre just hours before) as their winner. Ariel however took some exception to this and proceeded to get into a confrontation with her, and as Kevin Thorn went in for backup, Hardcore Holly emerged from the back to subdue the Vampire, while Torrie made her exist with the referee and a towel covering up what looked like to be a wardrobe malfunction (it was hard to tell from the Gods).

This lead to a match between...

Hardcore Holly vs Kevin Thorn

Thorn dominated exchanges before Holly took over, hitting his patented dropkick and finally the Alambamaslam for the win.

And so we made our way towards last match of the first part of the show, and the one which the crowd were, understandably and incredibly hot for....

The Spirit Squad came out to the ring for a tag team match, and proceeded to bad mouth the Scottish crowd, running down the Scottish football team for not being world champions and they, unlike us, would get their titles.

Shortly afterwards however, Ric Flair came out to a thunderous ovation and said that part of what makes his job special and all his years in the business worthwhile, is being able to share in special moments like that very night. And of course he introduced Glasgow's own Roddy Piper to the ring, wearing his gear, complete with 2 scarves - a Rangers scarf and a Celtic scarf. He showed his belt to the audience and Flair promptly showed his, taking his robe off to reveal that **HE TOO WAS WEARING A KILT.**

The crowd was now as hot as this humble reporter has ever seen live and Hot Rod worked the crowd as only he can before introducing their tag team partners for the night in an 8 man tag - The Highlanders. They came out carrying a Lion Rampant flag, wearing Scotland football tops and duly received one of the biggest ovations of the night. The sight of all 4 men in the ring, wearing kilts (albeit different tartans), is something that will live with me for the rest of my life (Piper and Flair did take them off to start the match though, wrestling in trunks).

The squad did however show their own comedy in disrespecting the Rangers scarf (red, white and blue) and keeping the Celtic scarf (green & white - as their attire) to use later on in the match. Something we found exceedingly funny, being St.Mirren fans.

Ric Flair, Roddy Piper & The Highlanders vs The Spirit Squad

I'll keep this one short. Flair took the win, making one of the male cheerleaders tap out to the figure-4 as the scarf proved as ineffective as Evander Sno's penalty for Celtic last night against Falkirk. The crowd then lapped up the celebrations as they did the introductions and goaded the squad all the way to the back.

Following the customary intermission it was time for the 2nd part of the show, and time for the heels to come to the fore.

For the IC Title - Champion Johnny Nitro vs Jeff Hardy

Another good match here, with Nitro grounding Hardy after a fast start for the challenger. Hardy came back strong of course and nailed a Swanton. Melina however distracted the referee and when Nitro recovered enough, he rolled up Hardy and got the pin with a little help from the ring ropes.

Our final ECW match was up next:

Test vs Sabu

This was the first time I'd ever seen Sabu live, and as such, it was a bonafide experience. The crowd, being mostly kids, weren't as into this match as would have been nice, but both men did their damndest to make it memorable. Test was nailed with a hard drop toe hold onto a chair after the ref was bumped out, which caused him to bleed a major one. Sabu hit a picture perfect triple-jump moonsault, and the groggy ref counted to 2, but not 3. Test then rallied, cracking Sabu's head off an earlier exposed turnbuckle ring and TKO'd his way to an impressive victory. Credit to both guys.

And so we went to our Main Event of the Evening....

DX & John Cena vs Rated RKO & Umaga

This was a pretty standard 6-man tag main event, but enjoyable for that. The crowd were massively pro-Cena, for those with an interest in these things. No mention was made of Britney & Kevin's divorce however, just some plugs for all things Scotch by Trips after DX came out to a massive reception.

Anyway back to the match - of note was a spot where Cena was going to hit an FU and got spiked by the thumb of DOOM belonging to the Samoan Bulldozer. In the end, a hot tag to Cena saw him hit his sequence of doom on Edge and a finisher fest then ensued, including as I recall Sweet Chin Music on Umaga, RKO on Michaels, Pedigree on Orton, Spear on Trips and an FU on Edge for the 1-2-3 and a final win for the good guys.

In all it was a thoroughly enjoyable night. The crowd was a bit young for my liking with an incredible number of kids there but that's the Fed for you. I shall be present at next week's SmackDown house show at the same venue and for those of you who are interested, another report shall wing its way, courtesy of the Black & White Wrestling Army.
