Corino Makes A Challenge

In what seems like a "Breaking News" type of story, "The Trouble King" Steve Corino told WORLD1Wrestling.com that he wants to start out 2007 the same way he started out 2006-as AWA World champion!

Corino, who lost the championship on January 22, 2006 to Shinjiro Otani in Tokyo, has never received a return match. Once Otani was defeated by Takao Omori in April, Corino was to receive a World title match on June 17 in Rochester, MN. The problem was that Omori lost the championship to current champion Ric Converse three days before that in Indianapolis, IN.

AWA World champion Ric Converse and Steve Corino are no strangers to each other. What looked like a normal title defense for Corino in September of 2005 has turned into a feud that has shocked and thrilled fans of Converse’s home base of Burlington, NC.

Corino won the first contest with Converse but it was surrounded by controversy. AWA officials were eager and swift to sign a rematch against both of these fights. A sellout crowd in Burlington was ready and waiting because they knew in their hearts that Converse only needed one more chance to win the title. But Converse was heartbroken when he read that Corino had lost to Otani just one week before. Upset but yet determined to prove to his hometown crowd that he was ready to be the World champion, he put his AWA Mid-Atlantic championship on the line against Corino, making the hunter the hunted, and successfully defended his title. Many experts will tell you that at this point Converse knew he was going to be World champion. That momentum carried him to Indianapolis and he overcame the more experienced Omori to become the 54th AWA champion.

For over six months, Corino has asked for a World title match against Converse but has been turned down. Now Corino, acting on behalf of Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1, has petitioned the AWA and AWA Advisory Board to grant him a World title match at Rebirth Or Destruction!

"Let’s be honest, the people of Burlington have been less then respectful of what I have done in this sport." said Corino. "It is time that Ric Converse comes back to Pottstown but this time bring the AWA title with him. I challenge Ric Converse!"

WORLD1Wrestling.com contacted AWA President Dale R. Gagne about Corino’s request and he said this: "Mr. Corino has gone through the right channels to secure a World title match but at this time the AWA has not sanctioned or plans to sanction a match for the WORLD-1 at their January 7, 2007 event."

Corino plans to push again for a title match but the question then lies, What would happen if Corino is granted a title match, where would that leave the PWF Universal tag team title match? We caught up with The Patriot to get his views.

"Steve came to me like a man even before he petitioned for a World title match and asked me if I would mind. I told him straight away that he needs to follow the American dream and be the best he can be. He was a great AWA champion before and I think he would make a great AWA champion now." The Patriot continued "If I have to choose another partner to go against Kaluha and that punk Larry Sweeney, I will do it. I am sure that 90% of the guys and girls in the locker room want a shot at him!"

Well, the challenge is out there. Will Ric Converse accept?
